This is the best Nest product by far. And we‘ve tried them all. It just works - daytime and night, rain or shine. The police have used our footage on 3 occasions in a year relating to crimes in the vicinity. It is a pain to install because you need a high powered transformer and a bell that won’t get fried, but they indicate a rage on their website. Yes, you have to pay for video history, and yes, good signals needed all round if you want to speak to a visitor remotely. But it’s still worth it.
Same as John Lewis

Pretty much my conclusion. They all have people complaining about different things, but those that setup the Nest Hello correctly don't seem to complain and the results seem a lot better than Ring doorbells. The only negative it has is no free replacement if stolen like Ring has, which is especially bad as they do have this in the USA.
You can also buy a plug with built in transformer on eBay or Amazon and just plug it in to a wall socket and use a smart device to announce someone at the door!

Can you please share a link. Thanks
What’s the best chime to get ?
Just to add you can now get a mains plug for the nest hello to plug straight in
Is there a way to utilise your existing wireless door bell by using a mains relay?
If i dont need a chime can I simply connect this to mains via a transformer?

Sounds like you need to move areas if the police used your doorbell footage 3 times in 1 year !

Yes.

I think most in the UK will use a google home assistant of some kind to announce doorbell rings (it will even announce who is at the door if you pay for the subscription which included facial recognition).

Yes. You only need to power the doorbell for it to function. It then uses WiFi to signal your phone or smart device. I'd be wary of plug in transformers though, we all know many are cheap and potentially a fire risk. Get a good one.
First time I’ve looked at these, current doorbell is mains powered and has chime attached. House is a new build so it was installed by the builders.
How do I find out if what they’ve installed is suitable?

It may say on your consumer box. If not then the best way is to disconnect the doorbell and measure the voltage (AC) across the 2 wires. Most UK ones are 12V, but you need 16-24V for the nest really.

Probably on the chime unit which is likely to have an integrated transformer (or less likely a separate one) which will give its input 240v and output, possibly 8v, maybe 12v
Tempted with one of these. Am I right in saying google have removed the ability to turn the status light off on these which then also flashes when youre viewing it?

Yes, that seems to be the case, in order to help protect the privacy of your burglars

Nothing a little bit of black electrical tape can't solve though. I might look out for a small black sticker to cover it too.

Yes you’re right the chime unit has the transformer built in, it’s reading about 10v so I guess that’s no good.
