I'm looking for a good wireless router, i will not be using the modem feature, is this any good for that?
Could not find this router in dd-wrt database, may mean no alternative firmware support.

I can recommend an Asus (I've got RT-N66U) and put Tomato firmware on.

Could I use this to create a vpn network separate to my bt router?
Cant recommend this. I use it with sky and about every month or two it becomes unreachable. I then have to do a hard reset and when it comes back on It's lost all its settings, I have to restore them from a backup.

Also if the connection to the isp goes down , it never automatically reconnects, you have to connect to the interface and do it manually.

This should work for you as it has the modem for ADSL (Broadband). This is not for VDSL Fibre connections though, which also runs through the phone line.
