For anyone considering one of these........

Don't do it. Buy a Popcorn hour NMT instead. The older A100 model is twice as good as this, the newer A110 even better

Similar price £100-£150 from a UK Seller but limited stocks left now or buy direct $179+shipping = $228

A110 is $215 direct+shipping

Or get an xbox for £20, mod it and run xbmc Though if that's beyond you, I agree about popcorn hour

Actually, thinking about it, at those prices, get an Apple TV and mod it to run xbmc - better still.

£100 from a UK seller? I only wish it was true, even used on eBay on the rare occasion they are posted there, they go for more :-(

Two new on eBay (effectively a private sale from a seller who has NO RECENT feedback) at this moment A100 -£145 Del. and A110 £165 Del. so the £100 figure is sheer wishful thinking!

Buying from abroad seems to be the only practical option, and that means effectively kissing goodbye to any warranty or money back (I know the theory, but in practice it is worthless), so it feels like no option at all :-(

Post I was commenting on has been removed :P

I agree the popcorn hour would be much better, it's an incredibly impressive piece of kit, but doesn't have wi-fi built in.

The XBMC option, well I've recently done this and found out that XBMC on a standard def tv seems to be lacking some of the quality that I've gotten used to with my Freecom MG-350. The only issue with the MG-350 is that it doesn't play back all formats of media, so I have a raft of GMC/QPEL files which I cannot play, which is a little frustrating.. both XBMC and Popcorn Hour perform admirably in this area and can play back almost everything - I'm just not sure about this netgear one... might be worth reading a review or two...

You can watch BBC iPlayer through this. Fairly handy.

These NMT's are heavily aimed towards the HD streaming market which is why wi-fi isn't built-in.

While Wi-Fi is adequate for SD steams it's not up to the job for HD streams, wired is a the best option but when not practical 200mb Homeplugs will give you 100mb wired speeds with wi-fi convinence.

Now that I didn't know, and had only heard of a Zyxel machine which was "on the way" :-)

What about Channel 4 etc that use the same Kontiki system?

I am presuming it will need the DRM protected content to be played from a PC, rather than from a NAS server though?

I'ev found netgear stuff to be quite good, so far anyway http://www.avatarjunkie.net/happy4.gifhttp://www.avatarjunkie.net/amuk/x9/happy6.gifhttp://www.avatarjunkie.net/happy5.gif

It is the Netgear label that is putting me off!

I have had a couple of poor items - a Wireless access point and a Wireless network card which were both downright awful, and support in the form of firmware takes what seems like decades to come :-(

you can get 7 pounds cashback from Amazon on this deal by shopping via quanti.co.uk.

Popcorn hour A100 is 229 Euro on www.divxplayer.nl which although 'abroad' would be covered if you pay for it by credit card. The main advantage here is that you would not have to wait for it to be made and it's already in the EU so won't be liable for further import duties. Website is in English and they probably speak better English that what we does.

This is a very good media player at a very good price. Sure, you can pay (at least) £70 more for a PCH A110 and you'd be happy with that too, but it doesn't mean this isn't a good choice either. There's the added benefit of this being a UK product from a UK retailer - there should be no problem with warranty. (Same can't be said for imported PCH, even ones bought in the UK.)

Sign up to Netgear forum and install the beta firmware (doesn't invalidate warranty) and these things become so much better than they are out of the box.

You could opt for xbmc running on an (original, chipped) Xbox, but then it won't play HD material.

If you're in the market for an HD media streamer, then don't discount this one. Especially at this price.
