I have used one of these for a couple of years and its a great router, suppose its a little bit dated now but its far better than some of the newer deal routers . I have DD wrt on mine with openvpn installed . Theres plenty of guides online showing you how this is done

There is an option for both the 1900 and 2300 versions i have purchased a 2300 one to replace an c2 tp link i have .

I use mine with the virgin hub 3 in modem mode. Without needing vpn its a straight forward plug and play. Its a big upgrade on the hub 3 in wi fi range

Anyone with a virgin SH3 should get it in modem mode and buy a decent router
Ive got the standard BT fibre router which is fine in terms of speed but doesn't cover the whole house. Would this improve the range compared with that? I'm not sure how good these BT fibre routers are (they make them sound like the dogs bo**ocks).
Older but still one of the few routers that can actually handle gigabit. All routers have gigabit ports but usually lack the processing power to handle it at full rate.

Nice to see my Amazon alerts still aren't bloody working!

If its signal range that's the problem have you thought about getting a BT Whole Home mesh system? Apparently very good, easy to setup. Currently there is a deal to buy refurb single discs direct from BT themselves for £39 which is a great price. You could always add more discs if needed:

Was tempted myself but signal range isn't the problem on my current Xaoimi Mi router, it was lack of available settings. It I was using the supplied ISP router and happy with its speeds then I would start adding mesh to the house.

I used this router while I had 500mb from Virgin and can say it performed really well! Massive upgrade from the SH3 (though anything really is). I've known some people to have issues with the newer firmware, so I never updated mine and it performed well.

What was the range like mate, im torn between the ASUS RT-AC86U , TP-Link Deco M5 Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System, NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 Smart Wifi Router (R8000) or ASUS RT-AX92U AX6100 Tri-Band Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System Large and Multi-Story Homes, i was set on the AX but dont think i need that yet.

Obviously depends on the type of house you have. I would go with a mesh system (tp link deko) if your house is fairly big and you have places to locate them because they seem to be the better option these days. Range was good for me, even with the rooms with thick walls, but for all the big downloads I always plugged directly into the router. Netgear and ASUS ones are also good, but my oh my do they look ugly!

Its an average 3 bedroom terrace mate, the hub 3 is in the living room and pc is the dining room which is separated by a brick wall but i can get 350Mbps via WiFi on average, first thing in the morning i can hit the 540Mbps, i can also get about 200Mbps in the bedroom above the living room, i was really set on the Netgear R8000 lol, If i go with with the Deco M5 would i still get top speeds via WiFi, i really wantg to be hitting the 540Mbps on my pc all the time lol and also get good range in my sons back bedroom
