Netgear R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router £137 @ Amazon.de
Rated as the number 1 router on the planet, currently £180+ in this country..
great saving from the Germans.... when you get it just flash it to the latest FW downloaded from Netgear
Obviously there is no customs to pay. Just for comparison on how good a price this is, BT's latest homehub 5 is £120, and this make that router look like a joke
•Accelerate your network and enjoy the fastest WiFi currently available
•High-powered amplifiers, external antennas and Beamforming+ improve range and reliability for up to 100% more wireless coverage
•Downstream and upstream QoS prioritise streaming and gaming, creating a blazing-fast, lag-free WiFi experience
+++++
Smelting price!

VAT exempt, Very nice
---------------
All other goods
If you're ordering or sending purchased goods (other than alcohol and tobacco) to the UK from another EU country then it's just like shopping in the UK:
there is no Customs Duty payable
there is no import VAT payable, unless you're ordering or sending purchased goods from one of the EU 'Special Territories' and if the value of the goods is £15 or more, however from 1 April 2012 all merchandise sent to the UK from the Channel Islands is subject to VAT - see below
there is no Excise Duty to pay
--------------
EU 'Special Territories'
The EU 'Special Territories' are The Aland Islands (Finland), The Canary Islands (Spain), The Channel Islands (UK)*, The French Overseas Departments of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Reunion and Mount Athos also known as Agion Poros (Greece).
Anything that supports AC.
+HOT on price by a mile!

2 of these, an ac extender in the middle and / or 3 x 11db aerials and there is nothing faster available or with less streaming / ping drop outs on the market!
Remember, this is a dsl router only.. so you need to plug your home/office dsl connection into it...
Here is an old video [tech has moved on in 6 months!] of the R7000, very extensive and VERY useful
youtube.com/wat…_c4
This is a brilliant way to keep your network on 1.3gb 5Hz AC private and let everyone else / the dorm / the bed and breakfast / the hotel guests / friends down the road... on a very fast 2.4Hz N wifi!
You're right that you can just buy a product cheaper in the EU (apart from drink & smokes) and ship it in with no HMRC interference, but it isn't technically VAT free as the German price is still "inkl. MwSt." (German VAT - 19%)
So you don't pay UK VAT, as you already paid VAT on it elsewhere in the EU.
Not trying to flame/beat up on you, just a technical FYI
I still have one of those as a back up...best router ever made
Actually, Amazon.de would have to charge 20% surely? They should do enough business to not be able to get away with it, that is? I know sending stuff to Ireland from Amazon.co.uk means ~3% more (1 / 1.20 * 1.23), so this should be 1 / 1.19 * 1.20 = 1.0084~. Course you'd only notice that if you were paying in Euro.
Yep, just checked: if you put in the basket and select a UK address it goes up from €161.00 to €162.35.
What I was just about to point out, until I saw your post!
Same here... :P
There are a few "vs" reviews on the net if you google them, in these the Asus comes out on top, but only just. There is a deal on here for the Asus (again a Germany import) as well if you look.
I have that router right here right now, and I am sending it back to replace with this Nighthawk....
I find it unimpressive and performs no better than the Asus dark knight it replaced.....in fact the 5GHZ wireless signal is a joke
I posted that as well I bought that one, getting sent back for the Nighthawk...
all those reviews do not use the latest Netgear FW which is in Beta at the moment, users are saying the Nighthawk is amazing with this beta FW
I'm guessing this is an equivalent or even better option?
Thanks Aeschylus. Just to confirm, you were saying that the Nighthawk is better than the ASUS? And the 5Ghz on ASUS is no good?
Thanks.
What is with these router names? Nighthawk? Dark Knight!? haha
if I am honest, I sold my Dark Knight for the latest Asus one, and I regretted it, I have now ordered this Nighthawk....
you can pick a dark knight up second hand for about £70 and would recommend that whole heartedly, however if you are flush and want the latest get this Nighthawk
yes, cost me £12.50, trust me it was going back
thanks
Thanks
But yes if you wanted rid of an earlier HH and still wanted to use the Openreach Modem its a great router.
The home hub 5 actually reviews very well, my point was based largely on the fact they are almost identical in price, so as such one would be foolish to buy a HH5 over this, and if you were upgrading to a HH5 you would already have the VDSL modem from openreach
It's probably the worst and will conveniently brick itself the day the warranty runs out.
I've had literally millions of NETGEAR routers, and they have all bricked themselves and have been cack.
ASUS 4EVA
The DGN2200v3 or v4 isn't a bad replacement for a DG834G if you want something similar but with N speeds.
oh god, no pressure.....
look at it this way, reviews are split, however having owned the dark knight I upgraded to the Asus AC68 and expected to be wowed, yet I noticed no difference...
so Nighthawk it is for me, but there will no doubt be people who would claim the Asus is a better bet
Thank you sir!
If you were an existing customer yes but BT Infinity customers now only supply the HH5. Personally I got a HH5 for free as I was helping test the device but yes I wouldn't of purchased one by choice I would still be using my Billion 7800N and now looking into upgrading to a FRITZ!Box 7490 or something feature similar.
that will be a horrendous price £300+ I suspect
Literally full of BS if anything. Though giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming millions, starts at 2 million plus 30 seconds diagnostics per router. You have spent 2 solid years testing them. Well done.
Please go crawl back under your Asus Fanboi rock. Asus are good but their thrown could be challenged, although certainly not by my Linksys EA6700, now that's a let down.
You have had 'literally millions of Netgear routers'. Guess teaching of grammar and numeracy in schools is not what it was
you can replace the aerial with 11DB ones that will flood your street let alone your house
