Back down to £139.99 again at Amazon - was last reduced to this 5 weeks ago, normally £169.99.

I've been watching this as considering using it this on Virgin Media, primarily to use with PIA VPN with some flashed firmware - DD-WRT. This router has a powerful Quad-stream 1700 MHz CPU which I understand is necessary to have maximum speed through the VPN due to the encryption needs.

Need a vpn router but surely too expensive for that.

Agree it is expensive but to get decent speed if the whole house's traffic is going through the VPN then I understand a powerful CPU is needed. I think this is currently what you have to pay to get this performance.

This link - restoreprivacy.com/vpn…up/ - suggests the following speeds from different cpus

600 Mhz = 8-10 Mpbs
800 Mhz = 15-25 Mbps
1.0 Ghz = 20-35 Mbps
1.4 Ghz = 25-45 Mbps

I have 200 mbps with Virgin and would not want to be too bottlenecked by the VPN.

Have a read some of the older Netgear router threads from the recent Amazon Warehouse 20% extra discount offer (now finished). I think this router was discussed along with the R7000 and some others. One particular model was rated higher than the others due to the chipset.

A lot run Broadcom which is a pain for firmware like LEDE. This is one to consider. A long with the Linksys WRT1900ACS

The previous deal was a warehouse deal with 20% off and was a lot less than this. I went for the r7000 as it's more stable on 2.4ghz.

Yeah. But that's Broadcom. Would like something fully LEDE supported.
