Don't know about the price, but I bought one of these about 12 months ago and it's brilliant! I use NTI Shadow (which was supplied with it) to do a back up of all my data as I go along, and backup the whole of my essential hard drive every night.

Cannot recommend enough!

Does anyone know if it comes with 2 caddies or just the one? Additional caddies are £16

Mine came with 2 caddies.

Yeah look like it will come with 2 caddies going by the netgear website: netgear.co.uk/rea…php

£123.35 with cheapest delivery option!

I've had one of these for two years now and it's great.

Also have installed more than a dozen for other people and all are still working away.

BitTorrrent client runs 24 hours a day for downloading when the PC is switched off.

Mine is plugged into a router and it streams to the PS3 flawlessly, although I use network plugs rather than wireless...

The three USB ports are useful for charging other devices when the PC is switched off.

Can't recommend this enough and at this price it's a steal...

what drive did you get? (make etc)

Good price, would be £10 or so cheaper to buy it with a 2tb drive inside and get the 2nd second free using the offer but could buy this and the 2x 2tb drives at the same time as save hassle methinks.

frakin hot.

I cant help but feel like a mug knowing i paid £150 for this.

I have a Stora drive, which also came with NTI Shadow. The NAS itself is fine, and I'm sure this model will be good too. But I'm not a fan of NTI Shadow.

As an alternative I would recommend you check out Karen's Replicator for your data backup.

karenware.com/pow…asp

Unlike NTI Shadow, KR simply copies a folder or folders to the NAS. This means you can access the files using a classic File Manager window. OK, the files are not encrypted but I don't need that on a home LAN.

JUST ORDERED 1, THANKS

This is the best of the "cheap" NAS enclosures. Build quality is superb and it just works.

The only downside is that the fan is a little noist for my ears. I simply replaced it for a silent 60mm Fractal Design unit surced from Scan. You can also download an app from Netgear to reduce the fan speed from default 1600rpm to 1000rpm.

To add to my above comment this NAS supports both X-RAID and Flex-RAID.

X-RAID is the default option. This allows easy installation and upgrade to a RAID-1 protected array.

FLEX-RAID allows for RAID-0 (faster in desktops but not really much use inside a NAS which is limited by it Gigabit Ethernet port and processor) and RAID-5.

As a sidenote the Gigabit ethernet port on these boxes only allows for tranfers of around 16MB's. (one seventh of theorectical max speed). It is not much faster than standard 100Mbits ethernet, but for streaming 1080P Video it is more than enough.

I use mine to stream music and video (all legitimately owned and ripped) to my PS3.

So its not just mine. Not worth buying a gigabit router then i guess.

Been looking at getting one of these for over a week now. Cracking reviews.

Isn't this a better deal - buying the 1TB version with free postage for £184.62 and getting the free 1TB hard drive?

Is it possible to have this setup so i can use the 2 hard drives instead of one backing up the other ?

If so i am buying one for my Dune HD Base 3

Got one too. Everything seems to work as expected which always is a pleasant suprise with things like this ( streams pics,mp3 and video to PS3 and works flawlessly with logitech squeezebox classic and computer). There is one drawback - the fan isnt loud but has a slightly annoying tone so wouldnt want it in the lounge... Not sure if this is still an issue as I got mine about 9 months ago but still gets a hot from me.

I have this. It's amazing.

And yes darrenjdoc - you can have one with 2 hard drives on their own. You can also have one backing up the other OR you can mirror them. But for your purposes you can just leave them on their own. If you want backup you can have that too - to destinations on the cloud (including Amazon S3, FTP, etc) or you can plug a USB drive into the back of the unit and back up to that. Back up on a schedule or whenever you press the 'backup' button. You couldn't ask for more with this

I mirror mine, but I only have 2x320GB in there and I've run out of space. Need a good hot (UK) deal on two new drives. Anyone?

Not wanting to play down this product. It is quite nice, and does what i want it to do - Backup my Office Computers every weekend.

We were previously using USB Toughdrives (Freecom) for backup.

What I do wish for all to consider is that this is SLOW ... i mean really slow. What used to take 6-8 hours for backup, took all of 2 days. Something that is worth considering when you want to purchase this drive.

The concept of NAS however is terrific. I have an NDAS system myself at home and happy with it.

Thanks for the info liddlefeesh.

I am going to order the 1 TB one

Hi

Isnt this a much better deal - amazon.co.uk/Buf…ics

1TB drive also with a bittorrent client?

If Im missing something please advise, just looking to get a NAS asap

very hot and I am tempted just to get this NAS and 2 X 2TB drives for the long run. This way I could move all the data drives away from my PC. At the moment though this seems pretty unjustifiable. I've got my main PC acting as a NAS itself towards my televisions, XBOX and PS3.

If they were giving away a free 1TB drive or 2TB drive I would have placed my order tonight.

They are - netgear.co.uk/com…pdf

I got the 2tb version a couple of weeks ago with a free 2tb drive for £263.20. The fan is not noisey when running but can be when it boots up. Overall I think it is worth the money.

They are doing exactly that !
The end result is a full 4TB of storage for just £250 - kikatek.com/pro…022

I am not sure whether the x-raid is that good. I am unable to upgrade to 2tb from 500gb... ( it creates boot error after 2 days of transfer!)
My advice is to get a 2tb at start..

They're out of stock there. I was actually looking for the 2TB one the other day and it seems nowhere has stock for under 300.

Are there 2tb bluray drives that can be fitted into this?

That is a single bay device. Also lots of bad reviews on Amazon.

My old man bought one of these last time round from cdiscounts and sent off for the 500gb drive and it never turned up to this day its still missing, other than that its quality.

the free drive "within 28 days", so if you wanted to raid would have to buy, then wait up to month for the second drive before using it.

netgear.co.uk/fre…php

How does this compare to a qnap or synology device?

I am looking for a soho solution to automatically backup to as i work.

TIA

Very interested in this. I have just bought a PS3 (bit late I know). My question is, what format are your streamed movies in? I I guess I cannot stream MKV's to the PS3? I have a WD HDTV also, but it is the old one without a LAN socket, only USB & HDMI. Hmmm.

Use a free program called MKV2VOB. it convert MKV file to PS3 compatible format

hmm this is a great price but 500gb is abit low...if 1tb that would be great...would prob end up taking the 500gb out...still hot deal!

EDIT: so i can stream to my ps3 even if my computer is off? and i can download torrents straight to the drive, EVEN if all computers are off?
wtf this sounds great....i think il just buy this...put the 500gb in my computer and buy 2x 2tb drives!

Edited by: "stovy" 10th Aug 2010

yes and yes (if setup correctly), you need to have access to a comp to start the downloads...after that turn them off.
