Seems to get pretty good reviews. Price includes removable 1TB drive, and an additional one can be added.

These were £120 at amazon a few months back, I've been waiting for them to go back to that price

just wondering what advantage there is to having one of these rather than just an additional 1TB drive in your PC?

Cos this is if you have other computers on a network they can access it !

USB 1tB drive is for 1 pc at a time.

A server can be set up with the home wired/wireless network via an router/switch.

That way everyone can access/share data.

These always get shot down, poor software etc. Spend a little more and get something that isn't crippled by bad software implementation.

A single hard drive in your PC is pretty limited to that PC.

A NAS plugs into your router and becomes a NETWORK device so can be used by all computers on the network. It also includes its own software (many NAS devices run linux).

Also with some NAS you can put in TWO (or more) hard disks and the use RAID to mirror what is on one hard disk to the other hard disk. If one hard disk fails it means you dont lose all your data.

There are other advantages like you can acces the NAS device while you are away from home (FTP server), you can also plug a printer or external hard disk into the NAS, some NAS can act as a media streamer, and some NAS include bittorrent clients.

Computer Shopper did a review of loads of NAS devices in their latest issue.

They reviewed 12 devices from £66 up to £550.

The best budget buy ENCLOSURE was the Synology Disk Station DS110j at £111 (but it only takes 1 hard disk NOT INCLUDED).

Their best buy Ultimate ENCLOSURE was the Synology Disk Station DS710+ at £368 (takes 2 hard disks, again NOT INCLUDED).

Their Best Buy was Acer Aspire Easy Store H340-H at £450 (with 3 x 1Tb disks)

You got any sources to qualify your statement?

Review here seems to think it is excellent:

I have implemented several Netgear NAS boxes and although you can find one or two annoyances, they have all worked fine.

I've been looking at the readynas but this seems a cheaper option. Will it take FreeNAS?

Hardly - as they can also access a drive in a PC on a network.

The real benefit of putting files centrally on NAS is to allow access to files when other machines are not on. It is cheaper to run that leaving a PC/PCs on all the time, and may well be quieter too.

Does anyone no what size of hard drives this can take up to

is it just 1 tb each, or can 2 tb be put in making 4tb

well for an extra few quid you get 1+1 TB included...£228.50 plus del...(about £5) ..there was a 2% voucher floating about so saves the delivery....
I got this......giving me a bit of a head at the mo though....:x

Seems NAS boxes are all the rage lately.
I bought the d-link dns-323 that was on here for £79.99 last week.

This is £130 on ]dabs.com at the moment.

Tempted to go for one. Are these not as good as the ReadyNas ones that were on here a month or two back with the free 500GB drives?

Please - DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR.
If you are thinking of buying one of these - get £139 out of the bank in £1 coins, stick them in a sock and hold open a troublesome door with your coin/sock combo.

Then punch yourself in the face every 10 minutes for 2 months.

At this point, take your £139 sock, add another £50 and buy a Netgear ReadyNAS

It really will be much less painful in the long run.

Trust me - from someone with an empty sock, blackeyes and a Stora holding open my tool cupboard.

So ummm... I'm guessing you won't be recommending this device then?
