can't find them cheaper anywhere else brand new. Would go very well with iOS 5 and an iPad or new iPhone to allow wireless mirroring, which is a new feature in iOS 5. The wireless mirroring is still slightly laggy compared to cable but I'm sure future updates will improve it. Of course the apple tv can do a lot more stuff but Im mainly getting it to use with my iPad 2, just need iOS 5 to be jailbroken on ipad 2 and everything will be great.

Refurbs of these seem to be going for £87 on apple store and about the same on eBay used.

Also play are doing the same price plus you get 0.5% cashback! play.com/Ele…rch

iOS5 Can be jailbroken, just not untethered.... yet

Original Poster

iPad 2 jailbreak for ios5 is not here yet, thethered or unthethered. But following some of the jailbreakers on twitter and it sounds like it's not too far off

Lots of Apple tv 3 talk on the net with a dualcore a5 CPU, I'm holding out for as it would do 1080p at last

I don't think the apple tv 3 will be out until the spring (2012). If you follow the way apple release products, apple tv, which Steve jobs called a hobby is only refreshed every couple of years. Mac mini is even less so, iPhone seems to be following a similar pattern with 3G then 3GS, then iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. iPad 3 will definately be here next spring as it's in the highly competitive and evolving tablet Market. Apple tv won't refresh as often, so even spring refresh seems unlikely.

Also, I thought apple tv was capable of doing 1080p hardware wise, but it was just being held back by apple due to software performance or maybe something else.

Mirroring is only available on iphone 4S and ipad 2 (unless you jailbreak).

can these play 1080p mkvs or avis after jailbreaking?

I've been holding out for the Apple TV 7 since the first one came out.

I figure it'll do Super HD with 16 cores.

Until then I'll just stare at a blank screen.

Chief price for one of these appetising Apples.

This device is for people, such as myself, who like to purchase their media legally and from a brand they can trust. Hot hot hot!

install Plex after jaibreak and you will have one hell of a media centre!

they can play 1080p mkv files once jailbroken through xbmc or plex (i think) but the output to your tv will be downscaled to 720p by the apple software

thanks for your reply amavadia!

sorry for the stupid questions, but can this play videos off my computer in my bedroom on the downstairs tv via wifi or homeplug etc? my router is downstairs right next to the TV

Yes you can, got mine hooked up to my nas & streaming 1080 mkv's

I have one of these and for the price I will vote this hot. That said however unless you want this specifically for the tricks with other iOS devices when linked this is a very limited device unless jailbroken which mine (at present) is not as I am running the latest iOS ATV release @ 4.4. You will be reliant on streaming from iTunes which must be running on a PC and MAC on the same network. At present you cannot emulate iTunes running on a network on a NAS and this should not be confused with running a iTunes server on a network NAS as ATV2 will not stream from the latter. The file formats are also limited to iTunes compatible formats. The online services are limited also outside iTunes movie rental and things like YouTube as most of Apples love for this seems in vested in the US market. For example in the US you can have Netflix on it which is a bigger and better version of Love Film.No such deal in the UK. If you want a pure media player better off with something like WD Live but if it is to play with your iOS devices this can be quite cool. All that said good price and hot or me.

Only if this ATV 2 is jailbroken !

Price had dropped today as I was looking at these just yesterday on Amazon and they were 91

If using as a dedicated XBMC client does this compare favourably to something like the £100 micro PC's that have been flying about? Cheers

if i were to buy one, can anyone point me to the best website etc to jailbreak this and with what programs are best to install on the atv

just ordred, the cheapest for a long time, another for the bedroom jailbreak, xbmc! looks like ATV3 will be a while. should have gote a few when my mate came bake from the states but was thinking there may be news on atv3... oh well its only 20 quid more.

Jailbreaking Apple TV 2 is a nightmare, a very hit and miss affair. I thought I was pretty adept at jailbreaking phones and i-Pads but this device has driven me mad. Trouble getting it into DFU mode; there are at least 3 different methods, once in DFU mode getting the ipsw signed off.

If you don't jailbreak to play movies through ATV then you have to import all of your video files into i-Tunes, which means converting them into an Apple friendly format. Handbrake takes about 4 hours to convert an 2 hour mkv file into m4v, however once you have persevered and added your files into i-Tunes streaming is great and very convenient.

Access to YouTube is ok, but I tried to access MLB TV (Yes I am a fan of the American version of Rounders) but it wouldn't let me subscribe as I'm not US resident! Why include it in a UK device if it isn't available? A Premier League channel would be very nice........

I had hoped that support for BBC I-Player and other on-demand TV would be forthcoming but it would appear not, if Apple would support those on-demand players then this would be perfect. But in my opinion it is expensive for the limited function it offers. Although if I can get the little sod to jailbreak I may be more generous in my appraisal.

very tempting.

oops refresh double posted. sorry for the duplicate

jailbreaking, to put it simply is freeing your device from the restictions placed by the manufacturer.

usually it is quitre straight forward process, with all tutorials and tools required on well known blogs.

Once jailbroken, the user can have access to the root file system of the device, allowing the user to install their own apps and make their own modifications. for obvious reasons, apple or most manaufacturers would not like this, and usually close jailbreaking exploits with firmware updates.

Jailbreaking a device can make it more unstble and can also cause problems that wont b e covered by the manufacturers warranty. Although I have never had any problems with a device due to it being jailbroken. There are far more positives to jailbreaking than not, IMO.

EDIT: anyone interested, youtube has several videos showing the jailbreak process for one of these devices, and also installing xbmc and plex

just bought 2 of these. they are ace when jailbroke and plex'd.

I can't tell about the 720p limitation, video looks ace on them!

once jailbreaked, does that mean things that are apple only, like airplay, photos from iPhone to tav etc no longer work?

Original Poster

once jailbroken, everything should work as normal except with the added benefit of being able to install non apple certified apps.

It's not as cheap as the AppleTV but if you want something with a bit more flexibility check out the Boxee Box. Plays pretty much any codec and resolution you can throw at it, built in Wireless N, USB for external HD's but in general i just access all my media over wired network. Has apps for iplayer, youtube etc. tiny as well.

can also stream audio and video from iphone/ipad using airplay, which doesnt work perfectly but it does work.

very tempting! still have a £20 amazon voucher that needs using from the Lovefilm offer last week

Personally speaking ive got a HDTV Live Hub which is by far the best out of the box media player (supports mac as well as windows file formats....loads the screenshots...running times etc for your films and looks cool etc) in my opinion.....

However these can be jailbroken to work with Plex which is THE BEST media software ive seen (Havent seen XMBC live tbh)...for TV programmes it downloads the theme music as well as the graphics...synopsis etc. AND the Apple TVs are amazingly small! so im really interested in getting one of these!

Ive got xbox xbmc. How doe the remote work using xbmc compared to old xbox remote which has more buttons?

Assuming I didn't jailbreak (I like a simple life!), what would this device actually do? I've had a look online, but it doesn't seem to be clear (to me!). Currently got Sky+ and an iphone. Would I have to pay for things on itunes to use apple tv, or can it watch tv off the internet? I'd like something that I could maybe use to watch iplayer, 4od & Youtube on the TV, but something simple!! I don't think this is the right thing, is it?

can someone pls explain what apple tv is or does. I am clueless about this.

Scan through the wiki

Got one running xbmc in my bedroom, despite earlier comments found it quite easy to jailbreak (4.2.1)

Ended up with a simple to use, completely silent, cheap and quality media centre.

Just the icefilms plugin alone is worth the hassle!!!
