Be has withdrawn its Be Lite product which had a 4GB usage allowance and has replaced it with Be Value which, while offering a slower maximum connection speed at 8Mbps, removes the usage cap. Full details of the new product can be found at bethere.co.uk. It is priced at £14 a month with a £24 connection fee, a free Be Box wireless router and carries a 12 month contract.

The service will use ADSL2+ but with a capped connection speed of 8Mbps as opposed to the maximum connection speed of 24Mbps previously offered. The maximum upstream connection speed remains at 1.3Mbps.

Existing Be Lite users should get an email in the next few days about the changes to give them the full details and options available. Existing Be Unlimited customers will be able to downgrade if they wish to if the modem is connecting at 8Mbps or slower, though this will require entering into a new 12 month contract.

This move is interesting as a lot of the market has moved towards usage caps and it seems Be are heading in the opposite direction. It is possible that Be feel the really heavy users will still opt for the more expensive product in the quest to download what they want as fast as possible. To some extent Be has always done things a little differently, for example their Be Pro product at £40 a month offers up to 24Mbps downloads combined with an up to 2.5Mbps upstream speed.

This looks like a good deal, good speed unbundled from the exchange.

Contract -

How long is the Be contract?

If you choose Be Value, your initial contract period is 1 year. After the first year, we simply ask for 1 months notice in writing to cancel your contract without incurring any additional cancellation charges.

Makes it a 13 month contract which seemingly is the only downside.

Great deal - I've been hunting around for a valueish product for friends, and this is by far the best. For 8mbit it's approx the same price from various BT resellers but with a 5GB monthly limit, or for unlimited UKOnline are 20/month.

Others don't tend to include the router either, which is rather nice: 4 ethernet ports, good broadcom adsl2+ chipset, wireless, 2 voip ports (you can plug in a regular phone and send all your calls through your cheapo voip provider).

Oh, and remember quidco, you get 24 quid cashback which will pay your connection fee.

Looks good. Also, Sky will be announcing a new broadband service for none TV subscribers soon, called Picnic Broadband?

Stunning, I am on unlimited at the moment but I can only get about 7 1/2 meg so this will save me £120 a year. Thanks OP.

I am on Be Pro and get nothing like the upload speed I had imagined. When I had Be Unlimited (with upload of 1.3Mbps) I averaged about 130kB/s upload with torrents. Now with a supposed almost double upload of 2.5Mbs I'm only getting maybe an extra 50% upload with torrents bringing it upto an average of about 185kB/s and a peak of about 220kB/s.

I have BeThere and am REALLY happy with it. They are very reliable and I get a connection of around 22-23MB. Another thing I like about it is the no minimum contract, just 3 months advance notice. BeThere just need to start advertising more. Then again, I wonder what will happen to BeThere when O2 release their Broadband, seeming that O2 own BeThere.

i think it's a good price for uncapped boardband connection. the speed really isn't an issue, as the max you can get depends on your physical location.

i am most concerned about the 12mth contract. i believe the previous packages don't have any min. term, only a 3mth termination notice.

Your torrent speeds are irrelevant. Be do not throttle - so your download … Your torrent speeds are irrelevant. Be do not throttle - so your download speeds will be dependant on your configuration and the speeds given from those seeds. Hardly Be's fault! What speed do you connect at and what speeds do you get when running speed tests?

Just out of interest, guv, what speed tests do you use, as it seems that they all offer different results!

the 12 month contract part is a worry, especially as they have a fair usage policy in place. they may not be to strict on it at the minute but whats to say 3 months in they clamp down. with it being there from day 1 you would be stuck..

voted hot though as its a good cheap package

thanks for the info, if there is a soft cap of around 350gb and it stuck around there then thats great, would take alot to be hiting that. if can find a free conection then il probaly go for this. then at least can se how the speeds get on and se if worth going up for the higher package later.

Don't forget that ADSL is a best efforts technology and therefore if your line is unable manage 2.5mbit/s upload then you may get less.

Also worth noting due to overheads your sync speed and your maximum throughput will most likely not be the same.

Might be worth checking your sync speed with your modem

I am on Beunlimited at the moment. I connect at about 15mb rather than 24mb. I may downgrade to this package as its £10 cheaper. Don't think I really need the extra speed, just thought it was cool.:)

If you just use it for emails and web browsing, I doubt anyone would see … If you just use it for emails and web browsing, I doubt anyone would see any difference between 8 and 22Mb. But for downloading, it really comes into its own. (I can remember saying the same thing when I upped from 512K to 2Mb!)

I do use it for torrents, seeing a torrent going at over 1000 kb/sec is great but I don't really need it going that fast. I tend to download when I'm at work or overnight so 1 hour versus 2 hour downloads doesn't matter. As for streaming media, I still haven't found a site that would make me sit and watch a tv prog or film in front of my PC monitor.

So I think dropping from 15mb to 8mb will be ok. Convince me otherwise as I'm just thinking about it at the moment.;-)

Interesting - I am with Be on special at 20 pm for life but only get 8Mb anyway so this sounds like a saving but should I give up the for life deal?

says needs a bt line, does that just mean you need a physical line or that you need to pay BT the £11 line rental per month?

anyone know if it's possible to switch from the 24mb to 8mb?? i am an existing be customer ...

thanks

Be is **** people...............You have to pay £75 b4 anything they r a joke. I payed it then found out that i cant have it on me line so i ****** it off got no refund and now they r sayin that i own the £29.99 a joke. I now a few people that have had a probs with them.

What did you pay the £75 for?

I've been a happy member for 8 months now. I'll probably go for the 8mb service as i receive just under.

A BT line is exactly that..a line in which you pay BT line rental to. How else would it be different?

This deal is hot. I mean, i'm with Be unlimited and I never reach more than 6MB (they say my line is approx. 8MB max! I think I got 6MB because of distance, wire etc.). That's megabits, not megabytes. I can save myself £10 a month with this!

I am on Bethere and my speeds are as follows Bandwidth (Up/Down)1,412 / 23,222, I have never had any problems with them, when i asked to be connected to fastpath this was done within a hour. A lot of people complain that the help center is based in Belgium and they are not very helpfull but i have never had a problem when raising a ticket. It cost me £24 to join which i got straight back with quidco, (why you paid £75 is beyond me!!!) With regards to torrents on Bethere i always get full speed from the news groups i use. Would highly recommend, Voted Hot

BeThere don't provide their service where I live(Pitsea, Basildon), they provide it where I lived last year, though >:@

Is Be better then Tiscali. At the moment Im paying £14.99 a month for 2mb.

The call centre is based in Bulgaria  and I'm bulgarian :giggle: So whenever I call them guess what language I use

I've been on Be Unlimited for almost 4 months and my modem connects at 8meg max, so this new plan is just perfect for me.

Damn , not available in my area . Paying way more than this for less of a service .

Quite possibly the worst use of the English Language I have seen on this board. I cannot understand it at all.

My Talk Talk package doesn't require a BT line rental to be paid, which is one reason why I went for it. Nearly all other broadband providers do require the BT rental to be in place, so you're adding that £11 on to the price before you start.

Oh, and yes I know Talk Talk are about as bad as they come, but they can fill the 1Mb connection that I have, and I'm too far away from the exchange to get anything quicker. I daresay the story would be very different if I had access to a faster link.

I always use abeltronica.com which is a free speed checker and have used for years which checks upload and download. Hope this help

BE* are quality

I'm with AOL at the moment. Having problems with it, seems to be incredibly slow since they gave me a speed upograde!

I was looking BE before mainly due to their good reputation, was really keen but the 4Gb limit was not enough. Now it looks perfect!

Anyone know if you have to use an ADSL2 modem? I've got a Netgear DG834GT at the moment and would rather not go through the hassle of switching to the new one. If I do have to use the one they provide, can it work as a wireless access point so I can access other computers hard drives connected to it? Thanks.

I am on be 24 meg package but only get 8mb download, mayb if i downgrade to 8mb i pay less and get the same speed

I found this somewhere on the net too. Have you tested it?

Don't forget quidco ....

Just tried it. I think it's expired. So has the "NUMBER10" code.

The service requires an ADSL2+ modem. They say you can use your own if it is compatible but they only offer support for their modem.
The one they say they use is a Thomson Speedtouch 780WL
and the data sheet for it on their site is here:
bethere.co.uk/dat….do
Manufactures web page is:
thomson-broadband.co.uk/cod…528

It is designed to be used for a wireless home network, so it should be ok as long as all your computers' wireless adapters support the WEP or WPA wireless encryption protocols (WPA is best).

I am currently on a standard 2Mb fixed adsl broadband, the samknows service checker at:
samknows.com/bro…php
says I can get up to about 5Mb on normal adsl with a distance from the exchange of 1.5Km.
So far I have not found a service checker that will tell me if I would be able to get the full 8Mb on ADSL2+ although be's website claims that up to 2Km away will give 15Mb so does it mean I can expect to easily achieve the full 8mb if I switch?
