Nichols unveils plan to launch cherry-flavoured Vimto

Nichols Plc (AIM: NICL) is to launch a cherry-flavoured Vimto next month as a permanent addition to its product range.

It will be the first time other than one-off specials that the drink has been produced in other than its regular flavour since production began in 1908.

A carbonated version of cherry Vimto will launch next month with a cordial following in May.

The Haydock-based company believes there is massive growth potential" for cherry-flavoured soft drinks, with growth of 142 per cent during 2009. Most of this was in southern England, where the Vimto brand is not as strong as in its northern heartland.

Consumer research on the product produced the best results it has ever seen. Nichols added.

Vimto is made from grape, blackcurrant and raspberry juice with a secret ingredient made from 26 herbs and spices.

Nichols spokeswoman Emma Hunt said the new flavour had exactly the same ingredients with the addition of cherry. It tastes like cherry and also tastes like Vimto, she added.

The new flavour is part of a five-year programme of new product development designed to stretch the Vimto brand.

Vimto Soft Drinks' head of marketing, Neil Gibson, said: The response to Cherry Vimto in our research was staggering and this, backed up with the growth opportunity the flavour has in the market, gave us the confidence to take it to trade.

Research firm Ashdown sampled 500 consumers in June 2009 and 86 per cent of teens and 89 per cent of adults said they were likely to buy Cherry Vimto, with 9 out of 10 teens and adults rating the taste "good" or "very good".

Tried this from petrol station, it's seriously great tasting! Loved it!

Lovely this is

Cheery Vimto? Thought the whole idea of Vimto was for it's original taste?

It's been 25p in B+M's for ages but this is ok if you have a local HB instead.

Mmmm Vimto is the best!

like the original Vimto, haven't tried this, will buy, thanks and heat from me.

i hated it

but good price anyway so voted hot, worth a try for peeps

I tried some of this the other week from HB.
The aftertaste is almost identical to normal vimto, with a slightly different first taste.
I would never guess it was cherry in a blind tasting though.

Hot but so old been buying this from my HB since before christmas

I got excited and bought 4 cans at the weekend but was a bit disappointed really. Good price though.

It's lovely! Big bottles are £1.29 or 2 for £1.50 at the moment in Asda. Yummy!!!

voted hot although the orginal vimto is nicer!

The original is a much underrated drink, down here in the South anyway, so will be keeping my eyes out for this...

will definatley be trying this
but the original vimto -cant beat that taste and luckily my kids dont like vimto so all the more for mee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Homebargains seems an odd place to launch your new soft drink!

Tried Cherry Vimto last night, i didnt find much difference in taste to the original, but maybe thats just me.

I recently tried Cherry Vimto for the first time and whilst not being a massive departure from the traditional Vimto flavour, I can only describe it as a taste sensation! I'm a convert.

I now buy bottles of undiluted original vimto to have either hot or cold at home, but as far as fizzy pop goes I'm now a cherry man all the way.

Bring on the Vimto!!! :-D

Yeah It tastes pretty much the same just not as sickly and sugary at least IMO with normal vimto one glass and you feel sick as if you just ate loads of sweets.
