Thanks for posting. I’ve added the price and merchant to the title.
Here’s a ‘Help’ link which gives tips and advice on thread posting.

Im not up on go pros but i take it this is a lower spec than the go pros which are about £200 of has their been a price reduction?

Do you get the mounts or are they optional extras?

Original Poster

I checked the GoPro website and it includes :

•Integrated Camera + Housing
• Built-In Battery
• Skeleton Backdoor
• Curved Adhesive Mount
• Flat Adhesive Mount
• Quick Release Buckle
• USB Cable

So you get two mounts with it. The good thing is this version comes with an integrated waterproof case that is good for 40m water depth that you'd have had to buy for the earlier GoPro's.

wow, that's a lot of GoPro posts in the last week. But that was good for me otherwise I'd never have heard about the SJ4000. I'm not sure about the "GoPro killer" tag I saw somewhere but they're a great budget option

I hear what your saying. The foolish part of me is saying to buy the Black edition but my sensible brain is saying 'it's going to end up in a drawer most of it's life and at least if you drop it or fall off your bike and damage it, it won't be as expensive a loss if you buy the basic one!'

I'm leaning towards my sensible brain at the moment . . .

OOH, sorely tempted, as an owner of the SJCAM (oh what a debate that was) the price again as stated is terrific value for a "dual purpose" action cam / car cam set up, (cue ..your car'll get robbed if they see this comments ..well junkies rob anything) ..point being it is a cheap HD cam, with some mounts, access to decent dedicated editing software etc, & just like when I need to use it I install it, & remove it at the other end, ..problem solved.

My SJcam mounts will also help (cos there are plenty included for the price, & are cross compatible) ..& this go-pro is better for stop motion shoots with the nipper & her cub pack.

Will ring up the car insurance & see what the discount is for incar footage with this which may well pay towards a lump of this already cheap unit, ..would love to see some low light footage if anyone has some going!?

This way I could afford (well not afford, but potentially justify) an entry level go pro multi angle for sports, / cycling on roads (contentious) ..& allow the nipper use for sport & general shenanigans.

Keep those go-pro deals coming say I !

Thanks OP.

Just looked on the site, didn't realise you needed to buy a discount card to get that price. Hopefully some other retailers will have it around that price with discount codes.

As mentioned above, never thought of using it in the car

Don't get a chest mount (for an obstacle course), get a good headmount.

Here's my obstacle course headmount video; a chest mount looks so weird.

Go-Pro Spartan Race Video

Strapping this to my strapon and strapping that to my lear jet. Boner.

Are the head mounts quite sturdy then? Just thought it would be interesting to watch back a race

Depending on which one you get.
I got one of these and it's great - Headmount

I'm looking at getting one of these too, looks pretty good - Shoulder mount
Looks like it will give a better view than a chest mount.

Remember I don't think the battery can be removed as its a built in battery - so no option to carry spares!

There will be something like that, that you can use.

Doubt it...

Hmm, you need the discount card and then buy all the bits that come already with the cheaper (and hard-to-tell-the-difference) SJ4000, a couple of side-by-sides and deal codes here hotukdeals.com/dea…752?page=11#post22990528

That head mount looks good, I wonder if it'll be any good for scuba diving as the camera position looks like it will interfere with the mask. I've just got myself a Jcam (ready for scuba holiday at the Great Barrier Reef) and am really impressed with the number of mounts included.

It's ok; not as good as a GoPro though.

A Hotukdeals poster called nadnerb put up an amazing (in my opinion) video where he did bits in Gopro and bits in SJ4000, see if you can tell the difference.

@@@

For anyone wondering what the quality of the SJ4000 is like compared to a GoPro check out this:
youtube.com/watch?v=1nm-A_m2yHA

It's a mix of footage from my SJ4000 and my brothers GoPro3+ Black.
If anyone can pick out which is which i'll...umm... i'll congratulate them.
Ok, this is YouTube which does compress the video a lot which may put the two cameras more on par, but even the original source files there is very little difference between the 2 cameras.@@@

Then with the Gopro you have to go buy all those custom mounts, helmet, handlebar, etc....and the SJ was already significantly cheaper...Paying for a brand imo. You could always buy a Gopro sticker Not that you see much behind the waterproof shell...

After the initial "wow, a new affordable go-pro within the range" we need to get out of the excitement zone & now ask a few questions...

It seems the camera is "fixed" into the waterproof case, ...so needs to be kept spotless in front of the lens (at least till someone can prove it is removeable afterall). ..if the case in front of the lens is gouged you've had it....
(a spare case for a regular go-pro is around £50 for official unit)

The battery, bearing in mind this is also "fixed" & not interchangeable is it the same battery? ..if so what is the process for removing the battery (after all why would go-pro cause service inventory problems by buying an alternate line of batteries).

A. it is a different battery to different specs, deep within the bowels of the unit... behind a sticker, so after a year warranty has expired feel free to open her up

I cannot see that beyond a screw or two the above two problems cannot be sorted.
However it is a pain to only have 1 battery in play & a decisively designed factor to encourage you to "step up" to the next tier of go-pro.

The CMOS !? what is the difference there, obviously it isn't the upper echelon latest model, so how does it handle & what does it handle, to date I have not seen any footage marked as "new HERO" for comparison, only older models, therefore, is this simply old unit (say, ..go-pro second generation) re-badged & toned down to make it effectively the disposable camera within their range?

Therefore the question to be asked is, what service is offered for this camera & what can be achieved beyond trailing a power lead for extended use that does not affect the warranty, (in all likelyhood behind the battery access, no-one has discussed is their a little "warning void if removed" sticker or similar? (answer: yup)

what else "fits" is this interchangeable with a mates LCD bac-pac screen, & wil it fit in the casing thus?

A. No upgrading this unit to a bacpac will not work, due to the fixed casing, whole new upper tier go-pro's required.

Not so hot, to me then the SJcam still wins on price, rear lcd, spares prices, spare battery interchangeability etc...

this is 1/2 a go-pro by the time you do the math.

Ps, do not call the generally apathetic outsourced info line from go-pro site, they know nothing!

Are there any vids took with this yet? Would like to see the image quality on these. Got a feeling its going to be sh@

there is pal, I went into gsmarena and there's a video in the blog section

As pointed out, think if you need to change the battery as its fixed, and be careful with case in front of lens.

Not being able to swap the battery is going to be a deal-killer for many I would think. Depends what the record time will be but even 2 hours of record time (which is probably optimistic) is going to be pretty limiting when a 32gb memory card would almost certainly be able to last double that.

For me, when snowboarding or cycling, I turn it on and leave it on until a) the battery runs out or b) the memory runs out. I then switch battery or memory card accordingly. Not being able to swap the battery would be a major problem.

Yeah, the battery would degrade over time, too. Pretty easy to manufacture it to be swappable, but they don't do it just to force you to upgrade when the life of what's normally a consumable runs down. Pretty sick imo.

Is it possible to use a GoPro or SJ4000 while connected to the mains or usb power source? or does it only run by its battery?

Cheers!

Not sure about the GoPro, but my SJ4000 works while connected to the mains & a portable USB battery pack.

I bought a SJ4000 last week and am just waiting for it to arrive. Still not really tempted by a GoPro.

Is the SJ4000 the one that's on amazon for £73 or cheaper somewhere else?
I presume it doesn't have wifi built in at that price as their is no write up on amazon

NFS please see the other sjcam thread (also often about go-pro's) ..it gets repetetive re-inputtin the exact same info, lots of lesser "clones" of SJCAM (aka sj4000) you need to get it from only a handful of places to ensure correct kit, hardware software etc.
