Thinking do I need this...?

Not forgetting the screen is a decent IPS one. (even Macbooks use cheap TN !) . Bargain if you know why you want to use it.

Price is normally around the £190 mark

Slightly dearer here (1.5% quidco on both this and laptopsdirect)

Remember that most sites vote down Google stuff automatically so find what you want from them.

Thanks, was about to buy it until I realised it has no disc drive.

Good price. £149 on Amazon, I think it's the same one:
amazon.co.uk/Chr…+11

Actually need add + £7.20 shipping. so good price in comparison.

Ops - Please add shipping charge too to title, think cheapest is £4.95.

Screen technology isn't as important as quality. You can get good TN and you can get bad IPS. The best phone screens are LCD, even though OLED has far greater potential for example.

It's a Chromebook, meant to be used online with Internet storage, but it also has a 16GB internal storage memory for offlline work.

This is the new model without an IPS screen. The older model was glossy all over; this has a better design but arguably worse specs.

Bargain price - Refurb's are going for as much if not more than this.

How many USB ports does this chrome book have??

I give it another 4-5 years and the average laptop won't come with a disc drive. I've got one in my main machine and never use it.

For some reason despite me REALLY not needing this - I want it.... Is it worth getting?

It has 2

Any good for viewing the odd movie?

Excellent price for this BTW - Even as a spare for kicking around the house. Much better than a budget tablet for internet browsing.

Very good price, but this has the same processor (Exynos 5250) as the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook. I own one, as well as a Toshiba Chromebook with a Celeron processor. The Exynos 5250 significantly lags.

ARM processor, avoid. Only go for intel processors on chromebooks

No it has a useless ARM processor.

Chromebooks can't natively decode AC3 audio, which is a bit annoying.

I do however get past this problem by using Plex. Chrome has a very functional Plex app.

There's no way AFAIK however to stream movies from Blinkbox.

If there are different versions of this as mentioned above, then not sure which one this is referring to, but it shows the 11" vs the 14" and the web browsing is very laggy on the 11".

Shows it at around the 14:30 mark:

youtube.com/wat…e6k

The website shows it as a Samsung processor in this 11" I believe the Intel Haswell is regarded as the faster processor which is in the 14" version (but then not as good screen).

I soooooooooooooooooooooo don't need this, but want it.

im a real technophobe, can someone help? is this any good for kids doing homework which is what i need it for?kids are aged 10, 11+15

My son is 16 and needs a laptop for his sixth form homework - we both have iPads but he needs a laptop with usb etc - soooo would this do the job? And in guessing I would then need to purchase word/excel etc? Anti virus bla bla?

ARM is better if you ever intended to run Android apps on the Chromebook.
I currently run a couple of Android apps on my Samsung Chromebook, they're quite good.

Lol same.

I am going to be sensible though as the processor has terrible reviews

This is ChromeOS, not Windows. You can't "install" Word on it.

This is a Chromebook - not a Microsoft product - you wouldn't need an antivirus as it is "sandboxed" (look it up) but Word will not run.

You may be better off with the likes of the HP Stream laptop which is around £179 if I recall and runs Windows 8.1

Perfect for students.

No, not perfect for students! If you are a paren't don't even consider buying one of these for a student, it won't do what they need..

Good price if you want a chromebook and are aware of its limitations - but for 99% of people it's a waste of money.

putting android on a netbook seems a bit of a step back.

I have the 13 inch and it's bloody quality. I'm a student and words can't describe how good they are. More or less a MacBook Air for 20% of the price

Get him this & Office365 ... enough for homework. However, he may want to do other stuff then it maybe unsuitable for his needs.

If you can afford it, get him a top of the range Macbook Pro retina. He'll be the coolest kid in the class.

The chromestore has the free OneDrive app which gives access to online Word & Excel. Not the full blown software, but more than adequate for many.

If you just need it to use Office applications, e-mail and the internet, then this would probably do the job - You don't need to purchase Word/Excel, as you can use the free online version:

I've told you a million times not to exaggerate.......

Chromebook might be pain in the back - you won't be able to print directly from it. No skype, torrent, MS silverlight and many other apps. There's also some bug in browser - you cannot post a new auction or even relist on ebay... In my home it's being used as a browsing machine only. Personally wouldn't buy again. Ever.

Here is the HP Stream - includes Office 365 and a lot of online storage for a year for £179 (TCB as well if I recall)
