in depth guide

O2 have brilliantly now brought out a contract which allows us to stop the contract at ANY time and only pay the for the phone cost, not for your airtime (if it doesn't make sense yet, hopefully it will by the end!)

"Unlike other contracts O2 Refresh splits your contract into two parts. So when you're ready for a new phone, you just pay off the balance of your Phone Plan, not the remaining months of your Airtime Plan that you won't use"

Try to remember the difference between the "Airtime Plan" and "Phone Plan" then you will see later..

click the link above and follow the instructions carefully below to get the price I did.

example for buying iphone 4s

1) First select "iphone" then "4s 16gb in black or white"

2) Secondly choose "Airtime Plan" (I chose Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Txts, 1GB Data

3)Then choose "Phone Plan" and click on £49.99

And then you should get the overall costs of the contract on the right hand side

Total phone cost over 24 months
£289.99

So what happens is you pay for two bills which come out at the same time

£17.00 Monthly airtime payment + £10.00 Monthly phone payment = £27.00 Total monthly bill

So here's the best part, if you want to CANCEL, you ONLY pay the £10.00 Monthly phone payment TIMES by how many months you have left during the 24 months contract. You are not tied into this contract, you can stop it whenever you like, you may have to pay a remaining months "Airtime" bill off, but thats it! That means you DO NOT have to pay the remaining airtime contract off.

Which would usually mean you have to pay £27 by how many months you have left which if it was 12 months for example would come to £324

With this O2 refresh contract, if you were to cancel in a year it will only cost you £180 to leave (£10 Monthly phone payment X by 12 months = £120)

If you were to to take out this contract tomorrow and leave after a few days you would only pay £240! Also don't forget you paid £49.99 upfront making the total cost £289.99!

It does seem particularly weird why its cheap to pull out of a contract earlier and to be able to pay for a phone which is has got a retail price of around £480 but thats how it is as i and many others have gained from this

if you want to keep this contact you could get student 30% off your line rental or if you work at certain companies

for people having problems cancelling forward this or read this to them

We may charge you the reasonable costs that we incur in collecting it, which may be substantial. You must make the Equipment available for collection on our request. If you paid any money for the Equipment, we’ll refund that money to you when we get the Equipment back from you in satisfactory condition, less any charges.

***update on o2 refresh once cancelled***

me and a few m8s got our bill on the iph5 & s4 saying we owe them 22.71 even though i paid for the phone and airtime was cancelled

went onto online chat told them what this was all about and they said it was early termination fees etc
i said if you check it properly you will notice i cancelled in the cooling off period and my cancellation was approved by a senior

they came back and said they will credit the account in 5 working day so i dont owe them anything and your account will be closed

seems o2 are trying a quick one to see if people actually fall for this so hold your ground if you get this
also before hand cancel all direct debit like i did and to those who didn't cancel direct debits you best check your bank statements if they taken it out if they have contact online chat or call them and tell them the above and they will credit back your account like they did to my friends

When I click on the link the price of the iphone 4s is coming up as £480?

tesco do the same thing

Be careful! You are tied in to the 24 month airtime contract also. So if you were to cancel early you'd have to pay that off too.

Total cost of the contract will be about £697 so not a good deal.

Please, please read and retread the T&C's before committing to this deal.

That's how it reads to me too. I understand the 'phone' purchase bit and the prices do look quite competitive. However, you are committed to a 24 month 'airtime' contract. If you wish to leave the airtime contract early there will be a separate unspecified settlement figure to pay. Not saying that's bad just that the intro does not make it very clear.

O2 Refresh: when I want a new phone

How much does it cost to end your contract early on O2 Refresh? What do you charge for the leftover Airtime Plan?
With O2 Refresh, there's no penalty for ending your contract early. All you have to do is pay off the balance of your Phone Plan. There's no termination charge for ending your Airtime Plan once you've settled your Phone Plan.

That is from there FAQ section.

Me and wife have just done this offer on 2 iPhone 4S's and were categorically told if you want to end contract all you pay for is the phone. I got my phone free so I could phone up after a month or so and cancel contract and pay about £230 and that is it

Both wrong, I'm afraid. You can pull out of the airtime contract at any point without penalty. There's a lot of confusion on this, but it's quite clear from the website, and an online chat will confirm it.

Are the warranties with o2? Otherwise apple only give a one year warrantee. Says in post manufacturer so I would check first.

tenner a month?

Nop it's simple. Choose a plan by paying £49.99 upfront. Take phone home, ask O2 to unlock online, in 14 days cancel Sim by paying rest of phone cost which is £10. O2 will charge you £240 when you phone them to cancel the sim contract.

in total £49.99 + £240 = £289.99

Please don't post unless you know what you are talking about

Students can get 30% the Airtime element of these plans, they work out pretty good deals. Just a shame the o2 network is absolute garbage, I get dropped calls constantly and if you are somewhere with what can vaguely be described as a crowd of people, forget using mobile internet.

Every penny counts these days

the system private or public are trying all tricks to save a penny then why shouldn't we

Just make sure you ring within 14 days other wise it will cost you for another month.

So can it be done as soon as you receive the pack, and do you have to register it or can just call them to cancel it first....

by the way I can go out for a nice evening out with my partner to the fish & chips shop for £10 she will have to share out of my plate though

yes as soon as you get the phone you can cancel it then , o2 will say "send the phone and sim back because your within the 7 days cooling off period" and all i said to that was "no thank you il keep the phone" ,some o2 advisors will say that anyway "would you like to keep the phone or send it back?"
