Record Mirror was a United Kingdom

weekly music newspaper published between 1954 and

1991 for pop fans and record collectors. Launched

two years after the americanradiohistory.com/New…htm, it generally lagged NME in

circulation. The first UK album chard was published

in Record Mirror in 1956, and during the

1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry

the official singles chart for the UK and UK album

charts used by the BBC for both Radio 1 and Top of

the Pops, as well as providing the US Billboard

Magazine Charts.

Record Mirror became "Record and Radio Mirror" on

September 29, 1973.

The title ceased publication in April 1991

New Musical Express was established in 1952 by

London music promoter Maurice Kinn, and was

initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format

on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952 it

created the first UK Singles Chart, a list of the

Top Twelve best-selling singles. The first of these

was, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve

sourced by the magazine itself from sales in

regional stores around the UK. During the 1960s the

paper championed the new British groups emerging at

the time.

"The paper was established in 1952. The

"Accordion Times and Musical Express" was bought

by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, for the sum

of £1,000, just 15 minutes before it was due to be

officially closed It was relaunched as the New

Musical Express, and was initially published in

a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint.

On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the US

magazine Billboard, it created the first UK

Singles Chart, a list of the Top Twelve best-selling

singles. The first of these was, in contrast to more

recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine

itself from sales in regional stores around the UK.

I used to get Record Mirror every week until the mid-70s until my tastes matured and I moved on to Sounds.

I look forward to rereading and getting taken back to my teenage years!

Thanks for posting this.
Wow 1974 Jan charts compare that with now makes your Hart bleed
Great find, thanks OP.
Something similar was taken down quickly after a copyright claim by writers a couple of years ago so DL what you fancy ASAP.

I posted this some time ago. It's quite legal As site intends to archive all issues eventually.
Top pop post! Love it NME man myself and lets hope they add more of their years, especially from the 70's which is my personal favorite pop decade, but Record Mirror has lots of great colour coverage from that marvelous music era. Thanks OP

Yes Seventies for me too
Superb post.Hope they put the 70s up too.
Thanks Boz.
70s was also my decade . Used to buy NME, and sometimes, Melody Maker too.
I recall another from early to mid 70s - "Disc" - I recall my mate had a collection of them and was throwing them out I told him not to - he'd regret it etc but he did anyway.
Within 5 years he bitterly regretted doing it
I'd love it if these can be found in the same way
As the years have gone by, he's more regretful than ever !
So I'll pass these onto him to help him get over losing all the "Disc"'s when theres no-one to blame but himself !!!
