I suppose this is more of a heads up than deal but I've been waiting for this to come along for a while now and thought I'd post to let people know that it is now here (Estimated Delivery 16th Jan).

The updated Shield TV will focus on picture quality with support for 4K HDR programming, and according to Nvidia, three times the performance of any other media streamer. The Shield TV’s library of 4K content is also expanding, with Amazon Video joining Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies, and Vudu, all streaming UltraHD (UHD) programming. Also coming is support for YouTube’s flagship TV app, which will offer fully immersive 360-degree viewing.

GeForce Now, the cloud GPU service used by Nvidia to enhance the Shield’s capabilities, is also getting an upgrade. It will be greatly improved by a move to GPUs based on the Pascal architecture. In addition, new practical artificial intelligence (AI) and home intelligence will be added to the platform.

Those and other features will be rolled out to both the new Shield TV and older models via a software update in January 2017.

500GB also available for pre-order.

In all honesty, one needs to think, do I need all this power..... if you are buying solely for the streaming, then buy the Mi Box 4K.... it is identical as the shield without the gaming grunt, there is no doubt these are the best boxes out there, but bloody hell they charge for that

Was gonna post this but ain't that rrp?

Aside from the new controller it appears to be almost identical to the existing model.
Not certain on the HDR functionality, perhaps the current one cannot support HDMI 2.0a?

Excellent post, lets all check the price drop on Mi box and previous shields come 17th Jan

I have the previous model and still pre-ordered this one. Best console/4k player!!!

Do you know whether the MI box also passes through Dolby TrueHD for Atmos surround sound? Cheers

mi.com/en/…ox/ has Mi box on HDMI2.0a.
Dolby TrueHD bitstream capable supported from HDMI version 1.3 onwards according to wiki

Anyway I'm miles behind on this. Which telly allows 5.1 passthrough? I've an old pioneer setup via optical which I want to keep but I'm in the market for a new telly and box. Over to the experts ...

Same price on amazon etc

If you need a Plex Server for multiple HD transcoding then this is a very good option - however, it might equally make sense to get multiple clients (thinking Xiaomi MiBox) that will support appropriate formats for direct play including 4K.

Just putting this out there for some opinions.

Is the Xiaomi MiBox officially available in the UK as yet? Last I heard, it was only available via import?

I dont sorry, but if you google the Mi box Kodi, there is 60 pages of discussion on this box, someone is bound to of spoken about pass through

One of the reasons I've opted to go for the shield is to use it as a Plex client due to its Dolby Atmos/TrueHD and DTS-X/DTS-HD Master Audio pass-through 7.1/5.1 capability.

I've not yet had a chance to test my receiver out using these formats and after investigating a number of other streaming alternatives this seemed to be the best/most straightforward option for me.

I think theonly way to justify this box is for a plex server, as it is the only way it make sense to me.... buy a Mi Box 4k and Steam Link, will still only be about £90, and that is 2 main selling points of the shield...so there is still £100 left to justify....and for that I am allowing a plex media server....reaching but best I can come up with

Don't understand an RRP increase of £40 for the same box with the same internals.

It can do 4K HDR and the software update will surely come to both boxes..

Seems strange to not upgrade any of the insides.

Thanks for the availability heads-up! Just preordered from Amazon

Same internals, but 40% smaller chassis. Plus this time they include the remote, and both the remote and the redesigned controller have IR blasters and work with Google Voice commands.

If your into gaming wouldn't a PS4,Xbox be a better option especially at these higher prices ?

I don't know if the OP is referring to Amazon video on this new model, or just that they do 4K with some series, but I've never got Amazon video to work on my first gen shield (sadly).

The thing about the 40% smaller chassis is also kind of a moot point as the thing is fairly small anyway.

I think they have confirmed the older box will be updated to have all the same features apart from the ir blaster which is hardware. I think you may need one of the new remotes or controllers for some of the added voice functions too androidpolice.com/201…ol/

The reason I want it is for emulators like n64, Dreamcast and GameCube.

I will be selling my ps4 (don't game anymore) for this as they have amazon prime now.
Over the years my set up always been a playstation and an android box but there always compromises like hd sound and lately h265.
This has the power for light gaming, Kodi, Netflix, Amazon video, plex, h265 and much more.

Mi box and others always fail when comes to updates, Nvidia has been on the ball with this one.

Perfect for you then......I just think. And I am coming at this from a big shield fan....if your only reason is as a streaming box there are better options out there....and nvidia has decided not to really upgrade it...just a refresh.....now tin foil hat time. A few people on neogaf are disappointed in the specs and believe it is to do with the deal nvidia has done with Nintendo. And could not release a box that is more powerful than the upcoming switch. Which nvidia is providing the chips for

When I tried emulating the gamecube it was so buggy - Any good guides on this?

SMALLER ?! It should be bigger if anything, my main complaint of the original is that it looks too small beside the PS4 and it doesn't hide the wires at the back

Yea not upgrading the internals was a shame. I thought they didn't update the shield tablet because of the Switch?

i like my wetek play 2, android TV box with a satellite receiver built in. one less box under the TV.
pass through, netflix in hd (4k works with beta update), Dolby digital, their own kodi fork, it is impressive, £110 shipped.

Comparison between the models Link

No point going on about it being the same hardware as the old box (minus the microsd and micro usb but who cares, you can expand the storage by USB 3.0, and if you really want to use a microsd then just get a USB 3 microsd adapater!).

Where are we to buy the old box anyway? They're sold out now and I see some have gone for silly prices on eBay as usual, although I'd reckon that will calm down now with the new box announcement.

Sounds like your a lot better off getting or sticking with the old model, no SD card means its probably only good for TV services etc

See my post above.

I use these where there is USB but no microsd port. Works a treat at full speed of the card.

And again, sticking with an old box is fine, but actually BUYING an old box is nigh on impossible.

And why bother, when you can just stick extra storage in the USB?

I was lucky enough to get one of the five 16gb 2015 models amazon had in stock this morning

For me, having an IR receiver and saving £20 was a bigger plus than a smaller console and getting a remote with it. I wouldn’t have used the remote and it’s tiny enough as is. I’d also rather have the micro sd and usb 2.0 ports. Everything else appears to be added by software.

Really looking forward to testing the spot

Yeh that’s what I did, they came into stock this morning so I grabbed one

I use my shield for Kodi and spmc.. then gaming especially for hyperspin.. 256gb of hyperspin on a micro SD card! Then a hard drive also.

Shame the new model has no micro SD card!

Expected more of an upgrade if I'm honest but what can you really do more for a media streaming device..

I've got the previous version of this. Let me just say that Google TV is absolutely pants, not worth the effort. It does win on Voice Youtube and Chromecast support, however it does not support Now TV (eh?)

Works for Kodi too, and Plex, but found gaming to be too much of a pita to be bothered with. The PS4 games are made for a controller, transferring a PC game to use with the Shield remote does not work that well (GTA for example)

Also found, using Ethernet via Sky box, could only support 720p gaming with poor latency.

Overall, an ok box, but too many limitations for me to use daily.

Current shield doesn't play hdr YouTube content as it's missing codec support for it. Does the new model fix this?
