New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - The Wandering Bird 2015 by Mud House Wines - just £2.99 at Lidl!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a stack of cases of this stuff in Lidl (Redditch) today for £2.99/bottle. We pay over £3 these days for Aldi's cheapest wine for cooking with!

Sauv Blanc is our favourite white wine tipple and the best are from NZ, Marlborough especially (we've learned to avoid the South African ones and the Australian ones aren't great either - Chile and even France produce an acceptable one if it's cheap enough though). There's rarely anything good from NZ under £6-7 and £8-10 is the norm. A quick look around the net suggests this an £8/bottle wine.

Lidl has a good reputation for wine but I have to say I have no idea whether this is national or even whether you'll find it in another store but there were quite a few cases in Redditch today. There was also a French Sauv Blanc at the same price which may be fine but my money went on a case of a dozen of the NZ. Cooling in the fridge now and I'll report back. Even if it disappoints (unlikely) it'll be a cheap bottle for cooking with!

Good luck if you go in search but please don't be upset if it proves to be a local deal as I have no way of knowing. Update: looks like it's nationwide - see other posters' comments!

Just found this link on another search - suggests it's in other Lidl stores too. Also identifies the same French Sauv Blanc.

You could be right: label in English says bottled in NZ but distributed by a German company.

I did come across this in Tesco, claiming £9.25 reduced to £7 - different branding but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same wine with different marketing?:

Good find OP!
The one in Iceland is a 'bladder' wine. That is bulk shipped and bottled at destination. Lots of Lidl wines are too. Nothing wrong with that as long as you get it at the right price. The only reason I see for this being so cheap is the year, being southern hemisphere it's 3 years old and may loose freshness. That said I would buy a few cases.

Yeah I saw a TV show that explains the shipping process, massive bladders on board.

As long as it hasn't been through the stomach and the kidneys first, in which case filling the bottles would be a bit hit or miss, it'll be alright.
hot hot hot
Chilled a bottle and had a slurp: very good indeed. In fact so good that I went back and bought another dozen before they close (or sell out). Still a couple of cases left in Redditch at 7pm and quite a lot more of the French one, which scores just as well in the reviews. Good luck if you're searching!
Anyone else found this elsewhere??
Someone just voted cold! Couldn't find it or what?
i found it in Lidl Kitts Green last night, nb it wasn't in the wine section, it in the food offers area. there were still a couple of bottles left (after id got mine)
I got a dozen many thanks
Basingstoke had a few dusty cases. I picked up a few bottles but carefull opening them as there is a bit of pressure inside!

Yeah, I noticed the very slight pressure in the one I opened; presumably a touch of 'secondary fermentation'? Wine was completely clear though, no deposits. Any experts know whether this should be cause for concern?
Loads in Morpeth, Northumberland. Must be nationwide, Redditch to Morpeth got to be some in between.
Got a dozen from the Wallasey store (plus a few more for a friend). More than 4 cases of 12 remaining 30 mins. ago., on an end stand opp. tills.
Put one in the fridge to try later
Also picked up a bottle of the French S.B. mentioned by OP (l'Escargot).
Cheers, OP!

(For anyone in the area, the Wallasey store is close to jct. 1 of M53)
Got another 12 from swindon lidl near B&Q, last box.
cooking?
Looks like this "bird" may "wander" round a few Lidl stores later Thanks OP!

no concern whatsoever

Thanks. I can't recall noticing that on 'still' wines before. Is it not uncommon?
Bought a few bottles today, but was in a green bottle. Same label however. Not bad, a bit sweet for me, but for the price, not a bad choice. Cheers

Yep green bottle, not so green when empty though lol
I *did* see a New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - but it wasn't branded The Wandering Bird, and it was £5.99 in Jamaica Street, Glasgow

Probably a Malo lactic fermentation. Sometimes occurs. Not really a problem. I've had it in reds, if it bothers you just drink a little, recork the bottle and give it a good shake, usually gets rid of it. In whites I usually find it refreshing.

Thanks. I don't think it's enough to need your suggestion - no bubbles in glass just a very slight 'pfst' on opening.

It's not usually bubbles in glass, more a mouth feel. Shame I never got out to buy some.
Great find. I buy Mud House sauvignon blanc from Majestic for about £9. Not my favourite sauvignon blanc, to be fair, but a steal at that price.
Any other suggestions for Marlborough sauvignon blancs? My favourite under £10 is Oyster Bay; my favourite is Cloudy Bay.

There's a French one in Aldi for about £4.50 which is well worth a try. They have a couple of NZ ones too but they're less well priced.
Not having much luck in Glasgow - tried Duke Street and they have New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, again, for £5.99.

My store the wine was away from the wine aisle and near the weekly themed foods and reduced goods.
Lidl seems to put where they have space and not necessarily where you would expect to see them.
