Would this work similar to fire stick? i.e. be able to access playstore and install any APK files?

Depends on your use, for Kodi/media playback it will be significantly better. For other stuff probably not much difference other than Google Play installed out the box. This is essentially the same spec as the new 4k fire tv.

Had this box for over a year, bought from banggood for a similar price, not had any trouble with it. I have a fire stick aswell. The performance of this is much faster, responsive and it's just easier to work with. It is a nice compact size aswell.

I've had a few Android boxes, and set others up for other folk, and the Fire Stick (both first and second gen) I feel are better for Kodi/SPMC. I've got one of each, btw.

Of the Android boxes I've bought from Gearbest, none have lasted more than a few months. One was even DOA. I got refunds for them all, but it was hard work.

Had this box about a year using it now it's worth this. Play store, Netflix amazon video all looking good. Am thinking about maybe upgrading in time as use with a projector and think Netflix isnt in full 1080p.

Thanks! Also can it be used to cast videos on to like the fire TV?

really good box, good price, install the xannytech ROM from freaktab. only downside, no hd netflix streams due to no DRM (widevine and hdcp) if you want hd netflix, then get the mecool m8s pro +

Can you try play the samples on here and tell me how your Fire Stick does?
jell.yfish.us/

Because this box will happly play the 140mbps 4k HEVC (X265) HDR 10bit file without breaking a sweat.
jellyfish-140-mbps-4k-uhd-hevc-10bit.mkv

Much more capable and versatile than a fire stick. Think of it like a tablet for your telly.

I like how they are still supporting with updates to the box which is rarely seen for android boxes.

Are these of any use of you have crap broadband speed (5mbs)?

Do they work on wifi?

Yes if the content is on a local network or usb 😊

Expect to pay import charges, I paid £4.57 on my last purchase even though they claimed it was located in the UK.

Had about 5M before TT updated line to 10M
It's OK at 5M for SD video but iffy for 720p

had ones of these for a while, never had any problems with it.

NEXBOX N8 TV Box Android 5.1 RK3368 8-Octa Core 64Bits 2G/16G

You attach your Ethernet cable to this. I used to have a fire stick. This is lightning fast compared to the fire stick. Dump the fire stick and buy this you won’t be disappointed.

I`ve had a few android boxes from recommendations on here. They haven`t lasted or they`ve been indredibly awkward to use: impossible to use without a mouse pointer which appears or disappears and even then difficult to use. And aps just stop working. My old western digital boxes at least keep working and are easy to use

RK3368

Says it all really.

AVOID GEARBEST! I ordered another box from a few days ago and got charged import tax of £4.57 even though I selected 'UK Warehouse'.

Gearbest customer service are useless and keep saying it's not their problem.

But it`s supposed to be good

Its tiny and works. Had this for 2 yrs now, brilliant lil box. Still going strong

Had two of these for a while, as mentioned in a previous thread, one of them seemed to keep rebooting and then 'die' after a few months but it was actually the charger. If this happens, a Sony PSP charger works perfectly, same connector and rating, plus a licensed Sony PSP charger will be better made, should be able to find one in CEX/Gumtree/Facebook wherever for just a few quid.

Cold, these are awful

A better choice than the S905W boxes and if purchasing as a media player/streamer then just install Libreelec and you are good to go.

Would this be much of an upgrade over a Mini M8S TV Box
(Quad-core Amlogic S905 Android 5.1 2GB RAM 8GB ROM 2.4GHz)

Yuu say 7.1 HD audio but will it bitstream Atmos/DTS-X? Also, any good for external HDD support from a usb hub?

Only if you need HDR with your 4k otherwise no real advantages, you can put libreelec on your existing box.

Not sure, our amp can't do atmos/dts-x sorry, it would be worth checking the main libreelec project audio formats. It will bitstream the ones I mentioned though so I imagine so as it's not decoding. Not used hdd's but works fine with multiple usb sticks so should be fine as long as it's the correct file system (again, libreelec wiki).

Rockchip are junk and never recommended, I'm not sure nexbox even made a rockchip device and there's been a few other sellers falsely using their brand.

Was it the Tanix box recently advertised on here as if you look in your account/order details you can take a screenshot and probably get the import costs back via PayPal as it clearly states UK warehouse.

I just did a screenshot so I could complain if necessary buy fortunately mine arrived without charges via DHL

Thanks. Have you come across a review of the new Mecool M8s Pro L (note 'L' suffix). This is available to buy and comes with the faster S912, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM and according to a YouTube reviewer who touched on it in passing natively runs Android TV OS and plays Netflix and Amazon in full HD and above. I can't find a review of it anywhere.

Rockchip aren't junk, the problem is that they don't release sources which makes them a poor choice for people wanting to use linux. That is supposed to change, though, and some of the RK series are going to be supported in mainline linux kernel - which is good news for everyone.

also, on LE forums chewitt (LE dev) says:
"We have been working with Rockhip Linux developers for a while now and there is a roadmap towards future support for RK3328 devices. Based on the simple fact that this work is based upon recent mainline kernels and proper standards (not just the hacked-up junk kernels Amlogic has shipped in the past) RK images look quite promising."

Which is definitely good news - AML has been the best choice upto now, but it's not been without problems and plenty of kludges to work around both in linux/LE and in android.

RK3328 is a pretty nice chipset, held back by software/lack of sources. I'd still recommend s905[d|h|x|w|z] over it for now, but it's far from junk.
