Looked at a few reviews and from the footage you can’t distinguish number plates. That’s a bit useless if someone hits you and drives off.

Better than having nothing though

True, but it would be better to pay an extra £10-15 to get something that’s 1080p that fulfils all purposes.

Been cheaper on amazon for about 2 weeks.
Any good as a rear camera? I have the 4K version at front hard wired and it’s been excellent

I looked at getting this, I currently have the 412g which is excellent quality so is it really worth the upgrade? I don't have mine wired in either.

I’d avoid nextbase cameras, they are essentially rebranded Chinese stuff.

You can get much better for the price.

That will be a common trait at this price point

"Chinese stuff" certainly does not mean bad quality.

I never said it did, I’m just saying you’re paying more for the nextbase name. When you can get something equivalent from China for less.

Nextbase UK is the British arm of electronics company Nextbase. The company was founded in 1999 in Surrey and is the UK's leading manufacturer of dash cams, as well as producing other in-car technology including DVD players. Nextbase is a registered trademark of Portable Multimedia Ltd

Most of their products are made in the uk as well.

I do not agree. Got this exact dashcam hardwired and it's been great. No problems reading numberplates. On a budget there really is no need for 1080p.

Heat
Good camera for a great price. Had mine hardwired by Halfrauds. Easy to use. Small enough to hide behind the mirror. Good recording quality day/night. Good playback quality. Heat added!
You can’t read number plates on 720p, so not a lot of use. 1080p is the minimum
Don’t these things encourage thieves to smash the car windows and steal them? .......the dash cams !
I think a video of the car and driver rear ending you is enough evidence as a clear number plate.

Ive got the 512g on the from at 1080p 60fps hardwired so would be interested using this at the rear.

Do you just piggy back it to the fuse box and is it easy to hide the wire?

Watching a few youtube reviews and videos of the actual 720p footage the number plates cannot be read, even with stills taken. In low light it’s even worse. There is every need for 1080p when the 720p option simply isn’t good enough for what it’s intended for. There have been plenty of 1080p cameras on deals for £30/£35 which is still inbudget if you’re willing to sacrifice quality for £8

I need a dashcam for my insurance. The policy doesn't say it always needs to be able to read number plates and in some circumstances your camera may not even see the plates of the other vehicle anyway. The primary purpose is to show you did nothing wrong, not to record plates. Most crashes are not hit and runs, so you can get out and take a photo/video with your phone afterwards.

Hopefully someone elses car doesn’t cause an accident that results in death that drives off. I’d rather have justice than 720p blurred footage.

Which you're not guaranteed to have even with 4k. Does your camera have a full 360 view in 4k? If not you'd better upgrade quick to avoid any injustice.

I’ll take slim chance over no chance for sake for £5... that’s he main point here.
The real point is you, I, everyone could do better, but we don't even when we say we care.
I have a 1080 Nextbase 212 and it recently missed a critical moment to get two stupid idiots in ford fiestas overtaking in dangerous areas. It was dusk and the camera just couldn’t distinguish the number plate so I don’t know what this one will be like! However, If I were to guess - a higher frames per second would also be a critical feature to lookout for!
I have this dashcam. It's brilliant. Unlike others it has great optics. The resolution is not the issue, it's the quality of the lens. Just because a can says 1080p, it doesn't mean it's going to be clearer or any better than a 720p cam. Quality is not down to resolution. It's also got easy to use software.
This is a great price for a proper dashcam. I would definitely recommend.
I've tried many a Chinese dashcam at circa £15 and they're rubbish. If the image quality is good, then the software is buggy and not user friendly. Mostly they're rubbish all round. I'm sure there are some good ones, but at this price, I wouldn't risk it and go for this.

No night vision on this one, the one with night vision is 39.95 on amazon.
Score of 50% by Which, when reviewed November 2016, with a price of £39.99.
Pros: Small and cheap.
Cons: Poor footage all round.
Awful dash cam...I had two of these, the first one failed after a couple of months, the replacement unit was bricked after a similar time. It also misses chunks of a journey! and yes I was using a very quick micro sd card.
Since bought a similar priced YI dash cam from Amazon and its worked flawlessly over a year period.

This dashcam has been reduced for a reason!
