Is this the usual go-to choice for a Dash cam? I'm thinking of buying it.

You'd be better off with the newer Nextbase 312gw,it can often be had for under £80 at Halfords

They had a huge issue with battery failures. Try to ensure you get one with a serial number starting 16 to avoid the problem. I went through four before getting a good one and the serial number info came from Nextbase when I started complaining.

I have both but the 402 has better video quality. Actually is the best dashcam I had so far. Too bad it failed just after one year. CPL filters are about £16 which I think is mandatory for any dashcam

The reason why I said about the 312gw as there were battery issues with the older models, and as far as I know the problem doesn't exist on the 312gw

Do you use the filter to help do away with reflections off the dash ?

You are right, I also can confirm that 312gw is working properly as I am using it now. On my 402G I was getting corrupted files, I am not sure if that was caused by the battery. I will replace it with a capacitor when I have time and I will see. Anyway I got my 312gw from PCW with 3 years of extra cover.

312 is currently £99 at halfords. shame.

yes, unfortunately some cars have a reflective dashboard and on a sunny day the dashcam will not see through. A circular polarizing filter helps reduce the reflections. There are magnet based ones where you stick a metal ring around the lens and the filter has a magnet. They are usually made for compact cameras but can be used for dashcams as well. Just google: Magnetic GGS KIT

Do you have your 312gw hard wired into the car ? I hardwirded mine in the other day so now I shouldn't have to take the whole camera and mount down, just remove the camera.

I did not hard wired mine, I had my window smashed once because I left the camera mount in the car.

here is a link for a CPL filter. Make sure you read the instructions regarding size before ordering

Cheers

I've recently bought a 312gw, off ebay as a grade A refurb (but virtually brand new) for £69.

Great dashcam, and after uploading my first video to the Nextbase website, have just received a free carry case fro the cam (worth £14.99) today, which you get for uploading your first clip.

I also hardwired it in so only have to remove the cam from the car now.

I had an early serial numbered one of the 402G's and my battery died.
I contacted Nextbase and was given the option of returning to them so they could replace the battery FOC or, the option I chose, to get a replacement battery to swap myself.
It's not that difficult if you have a bit of soldering experience!
I actually got Nextbase to send me two batteries so I had a second spare....
Might prove to be useful now....

anyone compared this to the mobius camera. i have the mobius front and back in my r32 but looking to get one for the wifes honda (just front windscreen)

I found the below website useful in deciding which dash cam is best for you. For example it says the gps feature could go against your claim if you were travelling even slightly above the speed limit.

Where can I find 312gw new below 90£?
Mine went back to amazon after failure during software update (stopped working) and now is for 94£
Got it for 82 before...
How they compare 312 to 402, which is better?
Thanks

i'd love to find this deal too...don't fancy referbished.

Far as I can tell the quality looks a little better on the 402. But the 312gw comes with the benefit of easily removing the camera when not in use. I'm not sure how likely it is people breaking in to cars to steal dashcams?
312 you can also wirelessly upload to your phone, which you can't with the other.

Anybody had any experience with the 212?

I wanted a small inexpensive rechargeable camera for my new car. One which didn't have a cable running to the 12v socket. Another member on here recommended a Mobius. It's the size of a box of matches and costs £60. You can adapt it to your wishes with inexpensive add ons too. I've just got mine and I'm really pleased with it and it's and hardly noticeable. I bought mine here...

Sorry to crash your post OP not voted either way. Just thought I'd mention this as was perfect for me and I'd never heard of Mobius before.

I picked up a grade B 312gw from eBay for £49 and it's pretty much as new, only a very slight mark on the screen that is barely noticeable.
The magnetic mount feature is good for removing it out of the car, would certainly recommend it.

If your not in a hurry to get one then just wait until Halfords have them on offer, mine ended up costing £74 when they had them on offer and by using a online code.

I have the 312gw and so far so good. It's not hard-wired in but the power cable was long enough for me to plug it into the lighter socket in the boot and run it tucked behind the trim all the way to the windscreen, so it's fairly unobtrusive.

Only issue is that my car supplies power to the lighter sockets even when the car is turned off and locked, so I have to remember to turn the camera off and on manually if I leave it in the car (which I do most of the time when it's in safe locations). On the few occasions I have forgotten (inlcuding once overnight), it hasn't run the car battery down yet but does anyone know how long it would take to do?

Yeah I mentioned that in my comment above. I sent them a video that hasn't been posted up on their website/Vimeo page yet, and thought it might have to go through a few specific hoops to qualify for the free case, but mine arrived yesterday, less than a week after submitting my video.

You can get the highly praised A119 for 63 quid (ebay.com) similar price on Aliexpress... if you're willing to buy from china, more discreet when installed and better quality, 2k 30fps or 1080 60fps. Mine was actually dispatched from a UK, warehouse and arrived in 3 days.

They had a huge issue with battery failures.

This particular model suffered from premature battery failure. But all dashcams that contain an internal battery will inevitably suffer battery failure within 18 months or so. The consequence is failure to save the vital video clip being recorded when external power is cut, the clip that would have proven you not guilty.

Much better to buy a dashcam that contains a capacitor instead of a battery, e.g. A119, Mobius, etc. My capacitor-equipped Mobius still works perfectly after more than 3 years of daily use.

Nothing wrong with a Mobius but it does not have a GPS, or any G sensor to know where you are and also to lock files in the event of a collision.
The Mobius also had a reputation for being a little noisy radio frequency wise and potentially upsetting GPS receivers but it was very close range, maybe 6 inchs at most, Not a big thing but if you have the camera by the mirror and the sat nav in the centre bottom of the screen it could be.

They may be better screened now, but a few drone fliers had issues do to the Mobius radio noise.

I didn't know that, although this is version 2. I'm not sure how long it's been out but I have a sat nav built into my Audi and have used both and not noticed any noise on playback. Picture quality is great and it's small. Horses for courses really. I just wanted something small and rechargeable which recorded my journeys.

But does it actually have any dash cam features ? If not then you may as well put a GoPro up in your windscreen and have a top quality image.

The whole point of a dash cam is that it records information such as -

Gps location
Speed
Time/date
Automatically saves video when there is an impact
Automatically starts and stops recording when the ignition is turned on/off

I can't make my mind up on whether to get a dashcam. A mate had his car broken into as he left the mount up & they took the camera which was in the glovebox. Not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of taking it down everytime

One way around that is to not leave it in your glove box and if you don't keep anything expensive in there then leave it open to show anyone looking that there is nothing worth taking.

Bought the duo version from eBay the other day for £95 grade A.In perfect condition well pleased.Just prefer having the added security of rear camera too.
