Can these be unlocked easily from Vodafone ?

Moved it to Mobiles for you

£699 total price (excluding Quidco)

I'd still go with the desire, not just because of the price but because it has the real buttons at the bottom which I believe are much more useful than the touch buttons on the Nexus One.
Think Vodaphone were just a little late on the uptake, Nexus has been around since January.

I thought all Nexus Ones were unlocked?

Every phone now from Vodafone is now unlocked , if for some reason it is not just ring them up and they'll provide you with the way to unlock it free

Also the Nexus One is getting the latest Android 2.2 in a few weeks

doesn't the nexus get updates faster and more likely to be maintained with updates.

Yes, Nexus One is more likely to receive official updates to new Android releases, but the dev community will likely shoehorn the releases onto "unsupported" devices. I believe the Hero already has a 2.1 release hacked for it.

That may be true, but the dev community releases do not always give full support, such as for GPS and Camera!

This is not a new deal, it's been this price for weeks, and it's 24 months. There are much better deals on the Desire as it's available on all the main networks so there's real competition. Samsung Galaxy S is out next weekend, so I think I would need to see that first, it will be cheaper than the Nexus most likely.

Only advantage over the Desire is quicker updates to Android, and if you're a HTC Hero still running Android 1.5 you'll understand what I mean.

Froyo (Android 2.2) is available on Nexus One now, there have also been some early ports to the Desire according the XDA Developers forum. Rumours are HTC will release an update late June, but that date needs a considerable pince of salt.

Android 2.1 on the Hero is an official HTC release in the US. Spoke to someone from HTC Europe last week and they're still on track for June releases for EU carriers.

So, yeah, all features supported. Of course if you want to root it for Froyo then you're on your own

nice deal

I'm still undecided between this or the Desire, or something else entirely! The main draw to the nexus one for me is the quicker updates. And it's also supported by cyanogenmod.com/
This guy makes custom ROMs. I'm currently running his version based on Android 2.1 on my G1

Would advise paying £30 a month. Much more minutes and texts.

Same here, I was due an upgrade 2 weeks ago with T-Mobile but their pricing on the Desire is mad. I've also modded my G1 to run the latest Cyanogen build which is excellent.

Being stuck in the slow HTC upgrade cycle is what worries me about the Desire, though with the pricing of the Nexus as it's on Vodafone only, the Desire is looking a better option.

Lots of people are hacking the Nexus ROM with the HTC Desire ROM, to get the HTC Sense features. I've got a Desire and It was substantially cheaper than this Vodafone offering.

I went for the Desire earlier, good deal from mobiles.co.uk with Quidco and 5 months half price.

I think I will be able to live with the stock Desire ROM for quite a while, the faster hardware will make a big difference over the G1!

FWIW I heard that 2.2 version of Android closes the hole which lets you use hacked ROMs/root the handset

I'm split between getting this and getting an Elm on PAYG...
