Great price for a GTX 285, cheapest I could find on the net, before today's only discount.

OK, I;m not knocking this offer or anything, but why would you buy this when you could get a 4770 that runs at 3200Mhz for around £80??
scan.co.uk/Pro…20R

Like I said, not knocking it.. just thought the more Mhz the better the card in most respects?

The two get quite different results in benchmarks.

Tomshardware tends to be a great site when it comes to compairing different graphics cards. Do remember they don't test every manufacturers release of say the Nvidia 285 but often a few different cards.

Here is the main page showing all the results from a range of cards;

tomshardware.com/cha…tml

Here is the 285 and the 4770 compared directly;

tomshardware.com/cha…on&

As you can see there are quite significat differences,

The 285 is a decent card but do remember the other Nvidia cards are just around the corner (October / November I think I read somewhere). I'd suggest to hold off until then or buy cheap now and invest big then. Just my opinion though.

I am fully expecting a whole group of folk to say it's never going to be the perfect time to buy and you should just jump in now... in this case that isn't right. Do you really want to shell out on this baby now only for it to drop in price in the next month or two? Personally, I don't make enough to be able to justify that kind of depreciation loss when It could be limited if I wait a couple months.

lol....don't know how to respond....depends if this is a wind up or not :w00t:

Yes, you could buy a console for that price.

BUTT......my 4 year old PC runs games better and at higher resolutions than my ps3 (compared same titles on same screen).

Can't wait till sept / oct when I build a new rig :-D
If I were building now, I would plump for a 1gig4870 probably (just over £100).....
then get a DX11 card january time when their prices have fallen a bit.

As I said.. I didn't know why the GTx285 would be better if it has less Mhz.... then after reading the benchmark tests in toms hardware link I found out why :thumbsup:

No problemo mate. If in doubt Tomshardware is always a good resource to use to get an idea between gfx cards.

It's not all about the Mhz of the chips or the size of the RAM on the board, a lot has to do with the chips themselves. At the moment - and for quite some time - Nvidia are very much in the lead against the ATi. It wasn't always so though and I do hope ATI come back with some more good stuff cause I hate to see a market where one provider is in complete control. It leads to really crappy products... Windows Vista anyone? :whistling:

Yeah, I gave up on windows and am using ubuntu 9.04 jaunty at the moment.... I might give win7 a go at some point though maybe... but will try it on one of my older PCs first to test it's capabilities, have heard good things from the RC version though, so should be good
