What would the quality of photos be on a camera like this compared to the top phone such as a Galaxy S7 or 8?

What If you want to take a picture of something other than a bridge?

Snappy deal

I'm guessing because it looks like a "real DSLR" it gets voted hot....very poor spec...cold

Well that's handy to know!

Sorry, but it has the same tiny sensor as smartphone cameras, it big and bulky and takes very average photos.

Is it worth getting this if I've got the iPhone 7 plus camera?

No viewfinder and AA batteries. Cheap though it is I honestly couldn't recommend a camera like this to anyone.

lol

There seem to be some odd comments here. I already own one of these and the quality of the photos it takes is impressive. The optical zoom is somewhere beyond merely impressive. I took a photo of 'she who must be obeyed' on a poolside sun lounger from our hotel balcony, a distance in excess of 150m. The image quality was still very good. Try that with a point and squirt and you will be lucky if the subject is even recognisable.

Would this be any good for taking sports photographs? Looking for something cheap!!

Actually it takes very good photos. Better image processing and lens than a smartphone. Still I would pay the extra for the Nikon P900 or a proper DSLR.

The biggest problem with smartphone cameras isn't the small sensor, it's the minuscule amount of light that such tiny lenses can let in. Proper cameras (regardless of sensor size) don't have that massive problem.

Good little camera, the only downside is >> "Batteries required: 4 x AA"

Go on - I will bite. Let's see that pic

Which? verdict

Not worth considering 52%
Pros -Very affordable, easy to use, takes decent pictures in good lighting
Cons - Poor low-light performance, disappointing video, slow to start

Should I buy it?
No. There's nothing wrong with a solid budget superzoom, but the L340 has too many shortcomings to ignore.

eh? modern smart phone will probably take better quality pictures
problem with a phone is its 1x zoom vs 1-28x on this
the camera is about versatility and usability which a phone lacks

I still don't get it when people think a camera using AA batteries is a negative...
A lot of people prefer AA's, instead of a proprietary battery.

Absolutely, can use rechargeables anyway and carry spares, or if you're out and caught short there'll be somewhere, even in remote corners of the world, that sells AAs.

Depends what camera you have alongside the iPhone, I suppose?

Did you see what I did there?

Wheres the evidence?

so let's clear a few things up:
- 20MP (that's a very good size sensor)
- 28x OPTICAL zoom (this is much better than any phone camera can do)
- Optical stabalizer (again very rare on phones, and not as good due to size limitations)
- Lens size (this is very simple... the bigger the lense the more light it lets in and the better the picture. This lense is massive compared to any dinky little phone lense, and you will see much higher quality pictures)
- 4 frames a second burst is very good if you need it
- 112mm wide angle is handy
- 720p recordings is very good and what I usually record anyway

alll for only £99.99... yeah it's hot.

Most current smartphones do full hd... My 2 years old LG G4 with f1.8 lens will take much better pictures and records in 4K.
This Nikon is typical junk super zoom camera always "discounted" by at least 50% at Argos... such a huge zoom ? It's the only feature to grab some attention, but you will play with this once or two and drop in the drawer...

20MP is not a sensor size but a resolution and its almost irrelevant
lens size doesn't let more light in and you wont see much higher quality pictures (phone dependant ofc)
112mm is not wide angle
but yeah for a 'do all' camera its not so bad

For me AA batteries are a massive plus often when travelling I am not in a place where I can charge my battery and when a bespoke sized battery runs out you are up the creek without a paddle, there is nothing to stop you buying rechargeable AA's.
I would buy this the only reason I will not is that I want to have a manual viewfinder option

I'm looking for a good deal on a bridge camera for the wife who wants to take better pictures than the point and click we have. Anyone know of a an alternative to this if this isn't great at this price point?

Or... is this exactly what I'm looking for?

Dunno why people compare these cheap cameras to phones. You're not all going to carry this thing around in a pouch all the time are you? Most irrelevant comparison.

Until 2nd May add something cheap to put it over £100 and get a £10 Argos voucher as well.

The biggest issue with this for sports shots is the lack of a viewfinder. You'll find it almost impossible to frame an action photo successfully using the screen, particularly in bright sunlight.

The physical size of the sensor is the important factor, not the number of pixels. The one in this camera is more than a 6x crop on a full frame sensor, so you will get very noisy results, but at least there's an optical zoom and focal length advantage over a smart phone.

Sony DSCH400 is 10 times the camera for twice the price. I wouldn't buy anything without an evf.
