Intelligent Guide mode The D3000 intelligent Guide mode helps you take your photography to new heights, revealing techniques you thought were the exclusive realm of professional photographers but which you can now call your own. Artistry like blurring backgrounds or freezing fast-moving action is easily accomplished with the D3000. Always ready to extend a helping hand, the D3000 includes a practical Help function. When browsing menus, simply press the Help button to display a detailed description of the selected item.

Nikon DX-format CCD sensor; 10.2 effective megapixels
Combining a CCD sensor with Nikon’s famed EXPEED image processing system, the D3000 produces finely detailed photos that exhibit exceptional color and sharpness as well as smooth gradation, and does so at lightning-quick speed. The high resolution also gives you the freedom to print beautiful enlargements and crop more creatively without loss of sharpness.

11-point autofocus system for tack-sharp results
The diamond-shaped array of 11 autofocus points provides outstanding coverage for achieving focus no matter where the subject is located in the frame. Additionally, four AF-area modes — Single-point, Dynamic-area, Auto-area, and 3D-tracking — cover any situation, from fast or unpredictable action to static, off-center subjects.

Scene Recognition System — Brains behind the beauty
Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System utilizes a 420-segment RGB sensor to analyze a composition immediately before you take the shot. It then automatically optimizes exposure, autofocus, and white balance, allowing you to obtain beautiful photos without the hassle of making complicated camera

Too many bad reviews around about this company.

forums.dpreview.com/for…560

is this one better than the D70?

Good deal for a good camera. I've sold all my DSLR kit because it is all becoming obsolete and trash so quickly. I will revisit buying when the technology is matured and settled down.

It's starting to get better now, Canon have released the G11 with 10MP compared to the previous model the G10 which had 14MP. The stupid consumer megapixel race might be coming to an end hopefully.

Nice - I saw this kit in Costco Reading yesterday for £420-ish inc. VAT and thought it was cheap, the one in Costco came with a 2Gb SD Card and £5 free prints though.

not really a special price, you can get it cheaper from Curry's using codes and if Quidco pays.

Which code is that then? I have been looking out for this camera for a while and this is the best price I have seen it for from a reliable source

Curry's Camera is £429, enter code (Save4) at checkout and that knocks it down to £411.84, plus go through quidco 3% = £399.48, its only about a 50p saving but still cheaper. Also this camera was at a lower price £386.99 somewhere 2 weeks ago but can not remember where. Also available at Dixons Tax Free for £379, get your self some 1p flights with ryanair and your laughing.
:-D

It will never end!

Lol I remember paying £1200+ for my Eos 20d four years ago so in my view it's a pretty good deal! :):-D

currys it's £399.99, cold from me

£385 if you have a Calumet near you, or approx 392 with postage, but remember the nikon cashback too

Good find. Anyone know if the AF motor is in the camera body of if you need lens with it built in?

You still need to get an AF lens, it's still not in the body.

so tell me guys don't know much about cameras
but how good is this camera for a SLR?

How great would it be compared to my Sony T9?

is this £100 better than the previous sony offer

Plus £30.00 cash back from Nikon if i am not mistaken!!

nikon.co.uk/sit…tml

Seriously if you are interested in a Nikon DSLR spend the extra cash and go for a D5000, newer, better sensor with great high ISO noise profile and an articulated screen.

what … what about:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-incl-18-55/dp/B0020MLKF0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257629602&sr=1-1

Yeah the 500d would be a better camera, but then it's a fair bit more.

comes in just over £500.

so what makes the D5000 a better camera?

I see I can shoot video with it too so will that be better video than a stand alone dvd HD camcorder?

Don't mean to be rude (and I know you've already admitted that you don't know much about cameras) but judging by the questions you're asking, unless your intention is to become more involved in photography, you're probably better off not wasting your hard earned cash on a SLR.

This is a good deal for a beginners DSLR.
Unfortunately it doesn't have live view which is a pain.

The D5000 IMHO is just a gimmick.
Why on earth would you buy a stills camera and want to use it as a video camera as well?

I agree with your sentiment but it has/will become a feature on every new DSLR. Even my wifes tiny Panasonic TZ7 has 1080p HD video (and its surprisingly good).

already have a d90, otherwise would have brought this straight away. excellent value for money.

i have been using the d90 for almost a year now, i wouldn't recommend the d5000, if you are a bit more serious about photography, go for the d90 or if you are really serious about it, go for the all-new d300s or the new d700. bottomline is nikon outsmarts canon in many ways in the DSLR world, so don't even think about canon unless you are buying a pont and shoot camera.

I think you are getting into dangerous territory and with respect you don't really know what you are talking about. As someone else has pointed out, the lower specced Nikons don't have a AF motor built into the body which means that they can't be used with older Nikon lens.

There aren't really any bad DSLRs these days. Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony all produce very good products. When entering the DSLR market for the first time, the thing to remember is that you will probably be tied into that brand for a long time so you need to look at things like the cost and quality of additional lenses for that brand.

They also need to look at the upgrade path in later years but that can be difficult to predict. For a few years the Nikon offerings in that sector (D300, D700) have been better than the Canon equivalents but recently Canon have responded with the likes of the 5d Mk2 and the 7D which many feel are better than the competition.

Hi there. This camera got a good review in a recent PC Pro review, but they stated it was over priced. It is very much a novice DSLR.
Here is the review
pcpro.co.uk/rev…000

The seem to suggest the Sony A330 is better value for money for £40 more, and I would suggest if you are spending this sort of money then £40 either way should not be an issue.

pcpro.co.uk/rev…330

For a budget DSLR they recommend the Pentax K-m which is significantly cheaper

pcpro.co.uk/rev…k-m

I have been investigating as my Canon Powershot A80 compact is starting to fail, so pondering a £100 compact or a £300 cheap DSLR (the Pentax).

I hope that gives food for thought and proves useful.

Bunnster

The price is also £399 at John Lewis & Argos with £30 cashback.

thanks for that according to your link this camera is overpriced
however
if you can get £60 cashback from Nikon then it comes to a total of £340.

Verdict

Nikon's D3000 is a good choice for first-timers, but potential buyers should wait for the price to come down

Review Date: 14 Oct 2009

Price when reviewed: £382 (£439 inc VAT)

Buy it now for: £384.99

It is cheaper at a place called camera box but not sure about delivery etc

still considering this camera

for the cashback deals check this out:

nikon.co.uk/sit…tml

tis only £30 for this camera shame that wish it was £60

All these deals pale into insignificance when you see how much more we
actually pay for our cameras and PCs - as it was advertised for a grand
total of: [GBP 154.09] here : (sorry link is a 404 not found - so ignore my post)
Not sure about the customs and shipping or the supplier credentials.

"I think you are getting into dangerous territory and with respect you don't really know what you are talking about. As someone else has pointed out, the lower specced Nikons don't have a AF motor built into the body which means that they can't be used with older Nikon lens."

You can use all nikon lenses on this camera.........BUT you can only use the AF lenses as a manual focus lense unless the motor is built into the lense.
Then there is something about the ability to meter with full frame which went right over my head.

I use all nikon lenses on manual and AF bodies.

IMHO buy a camera to suit your pocket and your ability. Dont bother with the video stuff, buy a video camera for that. Phototography is meant to be fun without worrying about the amount of buttons and gadgets on your camera.

How does this compare to the Nikon D60 or Canon EOS 1000D?
I'm looking at upgrading from my point and press Panasonic Lumix LX-1 and Lumix FX-35.
Thanks
