Does anyone reckon if this will go down in price over Jan sales?

Almost a certainty that there will be a few in the sales a little cheaper, but i shouldnt think by much, and i doubt it will be widely available. This is a great price for what appears to be a great starter camera, i have the D3100 and am more than impressed with it, this is even better by all accounts so a bargain. Thanks OP.

Err, its been a long day!!? I paid £60 more for this camera 5 months back, As a Nikon i doubt it will drop much in the next few months, until the newer version catches up, great camera and well worth it.

Slightly cheaper at Jessops: £404.00 after cashback and using code NIKD3100, but also potential 6% Quidco, which would make it £381.33 - every little helps...

You may get it a bit chepaer in Feb...when the cashback expires lol!

Good price for a good camera, I'd buy this if I didn't get the D3000 last year. Nikon paid the cashback nice and quicky too.

vat goes up in Jan dont forget. I was going to get a DSLR off of Amazon but they raised the price by £32 yesterday

Code is listed as cashback compatible on the Quidco website!!

Code is actually NIKD3100

Also note that the cashback is actually a prepaid visa card.

Yes, its not actually cash as such, but its pretty well as good as, you can use the card (no fees attached) anywhere that accepts a Visa card, to either pay in full, or in part for your purchase:

Your card is NOT a credit or debit card and does not have a bank account tied to it. It is a Prepaid card, so you can only spend up to the balance on your card, and only Nikon can load funds to it.Please note this card does not have cash access but you will require a PIN for purchases and a Telephone PIN (TPIN) for Customer Services. It is always a good idea to check your available balance before making purchases to ensure that you have the necessary funds to cover your costs. How do I make a purchase with my Nikon Cashback card? You can make purchases everywhere Visa is accepted. Generally you will be required to use your primary PIN to do this.

I'm very tempted, being a D40 owner with an interest in video.

HOT from me.

Watch for Amazon etc stopping their promotions though as there is now cashback.

It only came out in September! You can't have had it 5 months.

Video pretty good but turn off AF-F continuous focus as the lens constantly focusing is picked up quite loudly by the recording,
Took this HD video below a couple of weeks back with my D3100.
Lens was set on manual focus when i recorded this one hence no autofocus noise.

Whats better this or the D5000? Isnt the D5000 better?

Original Poster

D5000 12.3mp has a hinged but slightly smaller screen. It also doesn't have continuous video autofocus (AF-F) .
The D5000's video recording is only 1280x720 24 fps against the D3100's 1920x1080 24fps up to 30fps in the 1280x720 setting.
The D3100 uses the new Expeed 2 processor which is Nikon's latest version.

oh ok Jon....I am torn between D5000 and the Canon 500d but the D3100 may be worth consideration. I like the hinged screen on the D5000....but I like the look of the Canon....I was gona purchase the 500d but Amazon shot the price up

how does this quidco cashback work?

This has a better sensor and 1080p video.
Great low light performance.

D5000 has a swivelly screen.

This is a better camera.

What about canon 500d or this?

If you are not trapped because of lens purchases, probably the Canon 500D, it has superior video. Canon winning in that area still.

I was meaning the 550D (rebel2)

Cant afford the 550, 500d is my budget

Am really torn between this and the Canon 550d, this is my first step into the DSLR market but have been using a Panasonic FZ-18 bridge camera for a couple of years.

Arggg decisions decisions

Original Poster

My Panasonic TZ7 compact actually looks just as good if not slightly better with sharper pics in in daylight. Its with the high iso nightime shots without a flash that the D3100 really excels.

Actually ordered this from Tesco today as I get an extra 10% staff discount, £10 worth of clubcard points and a bit of quidco. Probably works out the same price as Jessops in the end but never mind!

marks

Unless the video is very important you might consider the Pentax k-x which can be had for 350 quid

K-x does only does 720p video (d550 and d3100 both better for vid) but its still shooting is very good for the money

I'm in same boat, considering Canon 500d or the Nikon d3100. I'm contemplating that Nikon is brand new against Canon being 18 months old or more! However, Canon has much higher resolution screen and auto exposure bracketing, that Nikon doesnt. Had a play with both last week and have to say that the Nikon was a little small and therefore uncomfortable in my hands. Whereas the Canon was an excellent fit... something that must also be considered.

Ordered one for pickup at Jessops - £444 if the Quidco tracks then I'm going to pick it up!

Got the D3100 home - unboxed and charging the battery now.

Jessops have quidco from 6% to 8% which gives just over £30 on this kit! The £25 off voucher ends tomorrow.

I am still tempted...this or D5000 or 500d - I wish I could decide!!!

I was planning on getting this camera anyway just looking for best price Heat added

Tempted by this, had my D40 for two years now and while I love it, I'd love a new camera

If this had a higher res screen I'd jump on it, video should be interesting too

Thnx for the website

lack of exposure bracketing was a dealbreaker for me on this one

Good camera for a starter.
Edited by: "carlosftw" 2nd Dec 2010

Far better ISO performance due to a completely new sensor, a drastically increased resolution, a nicely increased screen size and HD filming (I intend to do some video work and this would be a nice place to start, even with the limited frame-rates and autofocus issues, and the 'jelly' effect) all appeal to me greatly. While I know what you mean by 'upgrading' to a starter camera could be a bad idea, this is just so much cheaper than the alternatives, with the D90 and 18-105mm kit lens going for over £700 I don't think it's justifiable, especially seeing as I'm not even 17 yet.

The screen res is the problem for me, which is making me consider the D90, but even though it offers an integrated autofocus motor I don't think I could justify the price premium

Anyone wondering what images you can get out of these things, I've been shooting with a low end D40 and have been able to get photos like these:

If you reserve for store pickup at Jessops, are you committed to buy or can you just not turn up if you get a better deal elsewhere?

THanks for that, have been having a look around at reviews and will be off to jessops this weekend to try the different camera and how they feel in the hand before buying online. Seem to be between this, the 550d, Sony a33 and Pentax K-x. All seem to have good /very good reviews so now i think is down to how they feel and handle which cannot tell from a review.
