This is the Nikon Digital SLR Camera D3100 with 18-55mm VR Zoom Lens kit.

This has been slightly cheaper in the past but since the floods in Thailand the stock for Nikon cameras has been in short supply.

Quidco currently tracking at 1.5%

This seems to be the cheapest deal around for this camera and lens.

looks like this is actually more than it has been on average over the past few months...

Yes, this is due to the floods in Thailand. Stock levels are low for Nikon cameras, they have only just emptied all the water out of the factory and full production is not due to resume until March 2012.

Therefore you can expect prices to continue rising in the near future as the stock levels diminish. If you are after one of these urgently, for a Christmas present for example, then this is a great price. If you can wait until March next year then the prices may start going back to previous levels which were around £380.

Same with hard drives... now is *not* the time to be buying one!

I have the Nikon, and whilst I'm not proficient enough in photography to say which is best, the Nikon feels better to handle plus the range of cheap 2nd hand lenses to be had of Ebay sealed it for me - £50 for a Nikon 50-200mm non-VR lens!
Don't forget the Canon though (1100D if I remember).

I can do the Canon spiel if you like, seeing as I'm a fan boi

But seriously... Canon's are very nice, and should definitely be considered, the 1100d is the newest entry-level dslr, but it is a bit cheap and plastic. You can get it brand new with the 18-55 kit lens for about £350 at the minute.

It really depends on how much money you want to spend... if you're not wanting to venture over the £400/500 mark then yes only the entry-level cameras are in your price range (unless you look second hand). If you are willing to spend a little bit more, the Canon 550d is a really good camera for the money... it has been described as a mini 7d

Pentax has been widely available (PCW etc) as a twin lens kit for £50 more - strikes me as a better buy if you're not blinded by the Nikon brand name. Looks like the Nikon is better for video but if you're buying it as a still camera (which is really what it's for) then the Pentax seems to be in the lead.

Why is now not the time to buy it? Is it really going to come down considerably in price in March? If it is I'll wait but if I'm only going to save £20 by waiting I'll buy it now.

There are no crystal balls to tell what prices items may be in the future however I have been looking closely at the prices for this item and my hunch is that they will get more expensive in the short term as stock runs out. Prices will no doubt drop again to previous levels, depending on how quickly production can begin again.

This is currently the best deal for this kit at this time, if you want it now or need it for a Christmas present then buy it. If you can wait until the new year or longer you may be able to pay £20 or so less.

So the panic stories said but there have been plenty of good HDD deals on here since. Not denying there has been a problem but the results have been vastly overplayed - but then if I was a supplier I'd do that too!

link no longer working, deal must have expired.

next cheapest is Tesco's but they have no stock and when I rang they said they could not get any info from the supplier as to when they would receive new stock. Next cheapest after Tesco is Jessops at £430.

Is this still at that price? I just see it on Dixons website at 499 and only in red?
