here we're go again....
I got a canon also but maybe Nikon guys think there's is better. It's like apple and android debate I guess
£299 elsewhere (John Lewis / few others) with the VR lens
I'm looking for an entry level DSLR. Not a professional but for my personal use. Can you suggest if this is a good one or there are better ones out there.

This is ideal at the price point. I have the D3100 and its been perfect since the day I bought it. This is the newest model of the D3000 series and is a perfect starting point if you are just getting into photography.
Maybe add a 50mm prime 1.8 or 1.4 lens if you can afford it and a 70-200/300 and you're set for a few years until you may want to move up to a mid range body

Cold ...this is non-VR kit lens - reason for lower price !
VR kit lens cost most than at other reatailers:

Thanks Lukeo44...I'll Google for the add-ons you mentioned to first understand what it means and add them to the kit if they are reasonable..

D3200 you mean
Has been this price from Argos for some while.
The non VR lens is actually pretty good, but the VRII is sharper and available for only £20 more.
The 50mm prime is a "fast lens" therefore has a greater maximum aperture compared to the kit lens and so in low light you will be able to get a brighter image, and less noise as you're not compensating with the ISO, also outdoors the image will have softer bokeh. BUT actual "image quality" outdoors will not be very different and the very very small increase in sharpness will only be visible if you are viewing images at 100%. So the 50mm is a great lens if you"re going to be shooting portraits, low-light or video(silent focus motor).
Also there is no such thing as "worse aperture", higher apertures have their advantages too, enabling you to get a deeper depth of field, or more of the background in focus, and a sharper image.

It certainly wasnt black friday deal, it was just argos glitch, bought one myself as well.

Don't get a 50mm, get the dedicated dx 30mm 1.8. 50mm is fine for full format, but not these smaller sensors, it'll be nearer 75mm.
Spend the extra £20 on a VR lens. Seriously.

For the money this is an AMAZING camera in my opinion. You can play with all the settings and once you have learned the short cuts its as fast as the big boy Cameras. The kit lens is great to.
Dammit! Just bought a D3200 for way more than that a few weeks ago!
I'm looking for a Christmas present for my lovely wife, who has occasionally mentioned that she would quite like a "proper" camera. Ideally, I want something that will cost me the thick end of £300, make her smile like a mad woman on Christmas morning, get used around half-a-dozen times over the following couple of weeks, then sit in a drawer until we next move house.

Will this one do the job?

You can buy a Wifi dongle for it, but it will not as standard.

Very well. It has full auto mode. Do not forget to buy an SD card to. The camera can do most pro features or be a point and shoot.

It will sit in a draw as well as cameras ten times its price!

But yeah, it's an excellent entry level camera, for anyone who is just getting started they're unlikely to find anything it doesn't do well.

Don’t bother getting the wifi hardware for it, it’s too expensive and limited for what it is. Nikon’s idea of wireless capability is not very ambitious, it’s mainly there to tick a box.

That ain't a debate, it's a ridiculous and childish squabble, much like Nikon Vs Canon, utterly pointless.

I got mine from here for cheaper.. I think I seen it come down further than that on another post on here. But Portus Digital price I was very happy with.

I use the the D3200 as a back up and believe me it is fabulous, if I take out only one camera body it is the D3200, the 3300 is slightly upgraded however if it is not a VR 11 lens then maybe if you can get it at £299 from John Lewis then go for that. VR is not essential for a standard lens but the VR11 is exeptional and worth paying a little more, not for the VR just because it is so good. Hope this helps.
Amazing camera, twenty years pro photographer speaking here (fwiw)... I don't do nikon vs canon either, both have great cameras. I used Minolta, Mamiya, Fuji, Nikon and Fuji X (currently using the latter two). But I'm sure I'd have loved the canon gear too.

The D3300 will focus faster in low light.

Try these guys, I just bought a d7100 from them. Quick delivery, very cheap, they back the cameras up with a three year warranty and all reviews about them are excellent, and I can attest to that.
Yes they are "grey" but who cares when you get a warranty.

Hi, I did a quick search and found this at £244, is this better? I keep seeing people mention VR lens? Does this have that?

Same camera & includes the VR II lens but is a grey import so any warranty is via the dealer instead of Nikon UK. Any repairs may not be via Nikon but via a 3rd party repair shop.
