From my knowledge of this camera, it's perfect for hobbyist and start ups.

I've got two Nikon's myself and they really don't disappoint! A lot of people will say go for Canon but it's all personal preference.

I'm sure she won't need to but this camera doesn't support 4K Video and doesn't have built in Wi-Fi.

It's got great battery life and for a new comer to SLRs its very simple to use!

I'd always say do your research and read some reviews to make sure it's the right one for you, but I'd go for it if it was after my first SLR.

Somewhat irrelevant, considering that the OP is wanting to shoot stills, and that Canon still appear to be a generation or so away from being able to implement 4K in their SLRs.

MrGringo, for the money, you'll struggle to do much better than this. Do be aware that lighting and background are very important for catalogue shots too, so it's definitely worth investing another £50-£100 or so in some basic studio lights and a quality white sheet to shoot against.
1920x1080 at 60fps is maximum for video in mine.

Bluetooth transfer is worse worse than a poke in the eye.
I believe the Sony range is the only one that supports 4K video (which the OP isn't planning on using) so Canon will be no help.

(YouTuber Casey Niestat switched to Sony this year for this reason
This seems to be a reasonably common price for this camera at the moment - so no heat from me. I bought this camera a week ago for my daughter's birthday. At that time there were some offers around at this price which also included a free Nikon accessory pack (worth around £50). Very also seemed to have the VR lens version at this price (which is typically £20 more), plus the accessory pack, though I think they also wanted £5 for delivery? I tried to order it at Very and the £75 was via a refund to account scheme which I didn't like. Long story short I phoned Jessops and pointed out the Very price and they matched it - i.e. £354 for D3400 with VR lens, accessory pack and including free delivery. Not sure if the Very deal is still on but I'd advise people to shop around and see if they can at least get the Nikon accessory pack or the VR lens version at this price?

Edit - Very still have it with the VR lens at £429 (less £75 - so £354), though no mention now of the accessory pack? I think I would be calling around to see what I could get over the phone......

Argos have it for £449 with £75 off but that includes a vr lens and an accessory pack and if you're with complete savings and go though them you get 10% cash back so another £37 off. Best deal I found plus this camera has a wireless image connector with SnapBridge which works really well

Now that's a deal! LOL. Unfortunately a week ago Argos had no stock of the accessory pack so that may need checking....

Very tempted in getting one of these. How would it fair taking pictures at sports matches? Especially cricket and football. Obviously with cricket you could be 75m+ away from the action.
I'm after a Nikon 1 J5 at the moment, tried the NIKON75 code with it but it's not having any of it, so I'm guessing that the code is specific to the DSLR range??

Pics or it didn't happen
I had this and used it for some weeks then I got rid of it and got a D5500 instead. Didn't realise how much I would want a rotating screen. A fixed screen was more restrictive than I had imagined. Then a friend of mine wanted to do something with me on the video side of things and the D3400 has no microphone port so you can't use a hotshoe mic.

Just things to consider before you buy.

For beginners like myself, if you don't need video then buy a cheap body and get lenses. Lenses are way more important than the body. Get a 35mm Prime in addition to the kit lens. A lot of people will say get a 50mm Prime but unless you want portraits 50mm will be tight for many. 35mm is more versatile on APS-Cs like the D3400

You'd need a longer lens - one that zooms more (150mm +) as the 55mm in this kit lens isn't gonna get you anywhere close to the action.

It's also pretty slow at the 55mm telephoto end at f5.6 so would need either higher ISO to compensate for lack of light getting in (leading to noisy photos) or a longer shutter speed to compensate for grabbing too little light, which leads to blurry shots even when you're not shooting fast moving subjects let alone sports. Things will get worse in as daylight diminishes.

In a nutshell it's a basic starter lens and any action/sports needs a more specific lens.

I was going to say something very similar - "Zoom lens kit features 18-55 mm lens" and typically sports photographers use 400mm or 600mm lenses plus a larger sensor than this camera. So ideally you'd need to replace a camera and the lens
Can you recommend a budget/entry 4k DSLR please?

I reckon Fuji XT-2 or Sony A6500. Neither particularly cheap, but asking for 4k cheap is like asking for a Ferrari on a budget 😊 If 4k is more important than quality your mobile phone might manage it.

try a samsung nx300 or any of the NX range 1000,1100 etc (not the nx100) from CEX. extra lenses will be a problem but they are fine, 20mp, nice and small, same facilities, just unpopular. Some will moan about low light, but physics... the NX range are effective little cameras and start from £125.

£419 after £30 cashback from Panasonic.

Any good?
I just bought this camera last week (as others have said this offer has been around for a while).
I was about to buy it at John Lewis, but it's worth checking currys ebay open box sales as I got a brand new open box one (fully 2 year warranty) on Wednesday last week for £308, plus it is the VR lens version.

Great camera for the money and a perfect starter... now just need to find the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens for a decent price.

Well my daughter uses a Sony RX100 iii for her vblogs and it's a cracking little camera for that sort of thing.
Its a very basic but good beginner camera..Good for the discounted price.
Good news - Amazon have price matched this with the VR lens. John Lewis will also price match with their additional warranty on top of the Curry's deal.
Amazon now shows a £55 off promotion making it only £299! Currently out of stock but can still order.

That's amazing! However, it's not the VR lens is it?

In any event, I've ordered and "paid" £299. The QA section seems to indicate that it's the VR lens, as does the "image stabilisation" tick in the comparison table.

You should post this as a deal - it's a great price.
