Yes, body with 18-55 lens however I didn't mention that it is a Canon "Reconditioned" unit. It has been said on the net that they are surpless stock sold as refurbs by the Canon outlet.

Sorry I can't link to ebay, just search canon 400d refurbished.

this sounds like a nice camera.

I keep thinking should I get the new D60 or the D40, but when you look at some of the pictures taken with a D40 and see how big some people have printed them, I think why spend the extra!!?? The money saved on getting a D40 over a D60 would be better spent on another lens or a flash etc... Just need to butter up SWMBO now.

Ken rockwell has rated the D40 superior to the D60 and suggests you spend the extra on a good lens, flash gun

Yes, I'm very familiar with Mr Rockwell. I have been reading up on DSLR's for months! :-D

I don't know why Nikon even botherd with the D60, it is not a massive improvement over the D40x, It does not stand a chance Vs the 450D which is only a 100 Euros more for which you get a 12.2 mp sensor, 3.5 frames per sec, 3 inch LCD with live view, 9 point AF System, compatibility witll all Canon EF & EFS lenses, plus it comes with the usuals like Dust Cleaning System etc, why would anybody buy the D60 ?

here's the review I was talking about
kenrockwell.com/nik…htm

Take what Mr Rockwell say's with a pinch of salt. Its a very subjective issue, Im no expert but the pictures Im taking on my new Canon 400D are the best yet!!! I read a Rockwell piece in the EXTENSIVE research that said DSLRS are a waste as a good compact can do just as good a picture..... they dont, my Nikon 4300 compact is far inferior in all aspects (no doubt a pro would be able to get better results on a compact than I can on my DSLR but thats just because I know I have a lot to learn!!).

Basically, the D40 is a nice bit of kit, certainly worth considering at this price but only against, I would say, the D40X (soon to be D60). You have to make a decision on the package as a whole, thats where I got stuck, the Canon and Nikon are virtually the same but the Canon has better autofocus (just) and can take more, and cheaper, lenses. I would say if you are like me and want a good upgrade to a point and shoot the D40 is the perfect choice....... or you can splash out a bit more for a Canon (apparently which one is better is a personal thing, this is the question everyone asks!!!).

Cheers

The D40 is an excellent piece of Kit  £235 is a fab price, i was talking about the D60 which does not offer much compared to the 450D

Good deal! I have a Canon 350D, it was a refurb that I bought on ebay and I had to send it back to get fixed within days of receiving it so be warned... they are not perfect but they will fix it under refurb warranty. I haven't tried the D40 though I whole heartedly recommend a Digital SLR over a compact Digital - the image quality is far superior and noise is far less an issue. Match it with a good lens (Sigma 18-200 was my choice) and you have a camera that will last you for many years and at these prices cost little more than a compact Digital with more flexibility and will produce far superior results. I've stuck with my 350D which is a cracking camera though I am tempted by the new 450D...

I'm gonna get the new canon 450D when it is released next Month:thumbsup:

Just ordered the D40 with discount code and quidco. Have been looking at this camera for ages. Voted HOT

Total price with Quidco please?

Price from Currys = £265.99
3.5% from quidco = £9.30
£30.00 from Nikon gives you a grand total of £226.69 if my maths are correct.

Why on earth is that - you printing posters out or doing huge crops ??

For 99% of situations 6mp is all you'll ever need....regardless of what the Nikon / Canon / Pentax etc etc marketing people tell you

Like a couple of others I just ordered D40 about 2 weeks. Just wondering if anyone knew what any good camera bags for it, I was having a look at the Lowepro Topload Zoom Mini. Any ideas?
Heat added!

I hope mine doesn't break down like that! You've got me a little concerned now but my mate got a Fuji refurb and his has been fine from day one. What was the problem with your camera? I might firmware update mine to the latest version incase of a software glitch. Nothing wrong with the 350D, it's still good  Your probably better off investing in a lens and upgrading later when the price goes down.

The 400D has a **** kit lens so straight away you're on the back foot, Nikon have the decency to give you a decent kit lens.

Once you start adding decent glass the 400D soon catches up but that all adds to the cost.

If you just want a DSLR with a kit lens the D40 is a better proposition at this crazy price.

The D40 has a cute nack of pi$$ing other DSLR owners off as it produces stunning results at a ridiculous price...I know people who've moved to it's big brother the D80 and claim the D40 produced cleaner images.....but then again picture quality is'nt the be all and end all for some....

I've been snapping for 20years and still to be limited by the D40....Ken Rockwell says it all about this great camera

What lens would you add to the 400d? Or is the new version in the 450d going to be better?

the 450d is going to be bundled with the new 18-55mm IS lens which should be better and if you wanted to buy body only, you could do alot worse than the 50mm f1.8 prime lens (yours for between £50-60)

how about the 400d body only with the 18-55 IS lens?

the 400d body only is around £345 at the moment and the 18-55 is lens (f3.5-5.6) is £109.

BUT there is a new Canon cashback offer starting on the 1st March although the details havent been officially released, so it might be worth waiting a few days to see if includes this lens. It will most probably include the 400d which offered a £50 cashback last time

Thanks for your help, have some rep!

thank you, my pleasure.

I'll also refer you to www.camerapricebuster.co.uk which is usually pretty good for price comparisons.

Right...treated myself to one.

What's the best bits of hardware/lens to buy on top of the basic kit, I'm just taking an interest in photography so don't need anything too hardcore, but any good filters/lens to look out for?

definately get a uv filter for the front of the lens - new lenses are expensive, filters aren't. From there, have a play with it and work out what sort of photgrpahy you want to do and develop from there. It does get expensive and there are so many 'must haves' its unreal.

Things to get though (ideal for christmas and birthday present lists): More memory, just get fast cards not cheapy cards and you can never really have enough; card reader for the computer; tripod and head; gorillapods flexible tripod; bag; zoom lens, nifty 50 prime lens, macro lens etc. flashgun.

This seems to be a popular choice:

camerabox.co.uk/pro…ANQ

Just to confirm, assuming quidco and everything else goes OK with this order - it works out at £226.68 total. At that price, the only arguments that hold weight for me are:

the extra expense of lenses (though the Nikon 55-200's anti-shake is so good, it's probably worth the extra anyway, I've heard you can handheld shoot down to 1/20th)

The 6mp vs 10mp+ debate. I'm of the opinion that in 30 years time we'll all regret having photos a mere 12mp as we won't be able to program the smart paint on the side of our house to display them very well (or some such nonsense).

But despite that I'm not able to afford the d60, 40x or 450d or better, so I'm happy with the beautiful clarity and lack of noise we can get with these cameras.
