6.1mp is ample, this is a DSLR, not a compact P&S.

seconded 6.1mp is more than enough for most people
unless your blwing your photos up to A2 size most people only have printers that will do A4

You can get this a little cheaper from Dixons ]http//ww…219, £231.16 after £30 cashback and using voucher AW5. If you use Quidco, then it's even cheaper - £228.27.

Thirded. I've got a Casio Exilim 6mp and my stepson has the D40. Both 6 megapixels, but there's no comparison between the quality of the photos he gets and mine. His are just stunning. Take a look at the comparative photos on Steves Digicams if you're in doubt - I always use the one with the surfboards and look for the blades of grass in the sand.

Tim

A 6mp DSLR will thrash a 10mp compact for picture quality and sharpness, its down to the size and quality of the optics, and the size of the sensor, the bigger sensor in a DSLR means you get less image noise. Another advantage is that you can see exactly what the camera has focused on through the viewfinder, rather than relying on a moderate resolution backscreen (which is not very visible in daylight).

I'm waiting for a 40mp camera to come out as I intend to take a full size picture of wembley

People always neglect a major advantage of a higher pixel rate... the ability to crop images with little to no loss in quality. Yes 6mp may be fine for A4 prints but what if you just wanted half your image blowing up to A4, then you have a problem at 6mp.

Well you could get a Medium format camera with a 39MP PhaseOne or Hasselblad back, but that's 1MP short so how about a ]138MP camera?

I think you are missing the point, the guys here are trying to make the point that 6Mp on this camera is far superior to a multi mega 10Mpixel compact. I had a D50 which was 6Mpixel as well and the quality will stand a great deal of enlarging. This is a great camera for this money and perfect for students or amateur photograhers requiring a decent bit of quality

That's the way the thread went but I was agreeing with the first guy who posted about it not being enough, everyone else started the compact comparison.

Thanks for the point, I have quite a few cameras some compact and some slr (pre-digital) and I know what i meant when I talked about a bigger megapixels, I have been taking photographs for over 9 years now, over six of these a pro. I know exactly what I needed the camera for, not to be lectured about sufficiency of a 6mp campact camera. And I beleive camera manufacturers did produce 10mp digital SLR's for a reason.

If people are not into photography then surely they'll stick with a compact, unless they intend on getting into photography.

Not my posts, the guy you are putting down! You're a rude little man.

So you've never ever cropped an image??

I too own this camera, tok some superb photographs with it.

Am not sour and am not picking up a fight, some people just post like they know it all, I dont always have time to reply to every post and I just look on in annoyance.

Whatever - Anyone daft enough to listen to advice from someone who clearly knows nothing about photography doesn't deserve a D40 at such a cracking price.

I'm average height by the way.

If you only have a kit lens or prime, then you can crop in to a photo in post to achieve the same effect as having had a larger zoom. The more MP/resolution you have, the easier it is.

Nonsense.

If the quality of your 10 million pixels is worse than your 6 million you achieve nothing. That does not even have to be just the comparison between a DSLR sensor and a compact sensor size. A Canon / Nikon etc pro sensor may have less pixels than one of their pro consumer/consumer cameras, but the image produced will be better with the pro camera.

What you will find is that the sensor in that pro camera will appear in the pro consumer camera some 6 - 9 months down the line.

Until sensors are mass produced they will always cost more per pixel. Hencepart of the reason the high price pro cameras can cost. But they will have the cutting edge sensor inside them, not the highest anount of pixels.

Depends how seriously you are, or intend getting into photography. The … Depends how seriously you are, or intend getting into photography. The Fuji won't disappoint but the Nikon is superior from the point of being able to change lenses, add a flash gun, lens filters, as well as shooting in RAW format...etc....... but now we're going into serious photography buff territory.... if you want a top end P&S then stick with the Fuji.....

Cool, I think I made the right choice. Don't want to muck around with swapping lens etc. Point & shoot & a little flexibility to play with.

I know some people say there is no need for these bridge cameras, but I think they are fab, the video mode is meant to be V-good also. Time will tell.....

The whole mega pixel has spun round sice it first became an issue. Everybody used to go on about how important the mega pixel rate was (and it was from say 1mp to 5mp) but then people started wising up and realised MP aren't everything. So now it's become a case of if you dare mention MP you get put down as ignorant or stupid, but remember the pixel rate is a feature of camera, yes it's not the full measure of a camera but it is none the less a feature which can surely be mentioned as a positive or negative?

Are you telling me it is possible to replace a 300mm 2.8 lens with a 50mm lens and a bit of Photoshop. Bird photographers spend many thousands of pounds on lenses and your suggestion sadly shows how digital photgraphy can mislead

No I didn't tell you that.
A bird photographer goes out to shoot in specific circumstances where extremely long lenses are the norm.

Well as it so happens I use Fuji Astia/Velvia,

However if the 6pm was good enough to crop the image without any noticable difference to the naked eye what advantage would your 10mp have.

Pointless argument guys, this camera is very good and a 10 megapixel camera in general will be very good. Unless you're printing very large photos the extra megapixels won't really help. It all comes down to quality of the sensors/lens etc.

If you're really serious about taking perfect photos then this is the camera for you, if not then get a fuji s9600. It'll still take some great photos but will require less money spent on it/time to learn it.
