I think this is a real bargain for the money. I belive the camera has now been discontinued hense the price drop but its about £120 cheaper than it was a month ago.

Just need to convince the missus to let me buy one.......

Now reduced further to £374

Good price but dont rush to buy it guys.
Nikon just announced D80 and hopefully will start to ship it in September. Prices will go down more imo. Plus 18-55 kit lens is not the best around. Better look for kit with 18-70mm.

Sorry Zheka, but I'll have to disagree with you, the 18-55mm is a fantastic lens at this price. The 18-70mm is much worse in terms of optical quality. Plus the 55-70mm tends to be very rarely used. The nice combination is the 18-55mm kit lens + 70-300mm Nikon lens (around £70-£80).

Personally, I use the Sigma 18-200mm lens (£250) because:
- I use it a lot in dusty environments and I don't fancy changing the glass
- I can't afford the superior Nikon 18-200mm VR lens (£500), which I think makes the best solution for amature photography.

Now, the D80 will costs about twice this money when it eventually comes out, so you'll be much better off with the D50 + some nice glass + Nikon flash for the same cash.

But in the end, what do I know...

Thanks for the info.
I was about to go for the d50 - new to dslr, in fact, i had my heart set on it, until i discovered the d80.
It seems to bridge the gap between the d50/70s and d200; i.e high end amateur dslr.
It'll be the one I go for. True, I have heard the 18-55 is optically sounder. The d80 comes with a (new) kit lens from play whcih seems to be a very good price:

Let me know what you think mate!

Use Egg and PERKZ20DIX and it's £340.44:-D

Just a word to the wise. Go and get touchy feely with all these cameras, plus the Canon 350D,30D and the Samsung and Sony offerings. The specs vary across all the brands but they all take great pictures. And they're all trying to lure in new customers with no brand loyalty who don't have a bag full of EF/AF glass. How an SLR feels in the hands to an individual and how you get on with the button placement and intuity of the menus counts for so much more up front than the slight technical merits of one camera over the other. I love my 30D for example, but I reckon Jeremy Beadle would find the DOF preview button a bit fiddly.

Imho you are wrong mate. Have a look at the reviews of 18-55 and 18-70 mm lenses and see for your self. Yes 18-55 have less distortion on wide end and cheap, but 18-70 is f/3.5-4.5 (against f/3.5-5.6), have much better buld (including optics) and with extra 15mm it will take more flattering portraits. But if you have money and want better glass buy just a body and look for other lenses.

If you need cheap 70-300mm lens, Sigma APO would be better choice, or wait for 70-300VR.

As for D80 I didnt say to buy it. My point was to wait a bit and see if D50 will fall in price even more.

And do what beamifrend suggested. Go and try them first

and hello everybody
great site btw

Welome Zheka! Totally agree. I have the Sigma 70-300 DG APO, £120 eBay bargain! Great lens + really handy macro at 200-300mm. Coupled with the 17-85 IS, the only 2 lenses I'll ever need.

does anyone have any words of wisdom as to whether this [D50] is likely to drop further in price?

cheers, dan

it would be impossible for it not to
im torn between d80 and 400d.

help!

imminently though? ... and do you think it'll be a significant drop???? :-D

I can't see it dropping too much more on the high street. I doubt they'll be carrying so much stock that there will be a glut. There'll probably be some good deals on eBay though. With the D80 coming out I bet you'll get a D70s for not much more if you need a Nikon. The Canon 400D has a much better feature set, if you don't mind tucking your pinky under the body.

Sorry about that 'word to the wise' bit in the last post.
Doesn't sound as clever sober :-o

i called jessops and they had 200 d80s on pre-order. so, demand is high in the uk if this is anything to go by.
they should drop, maybe later as the man says!

ps is the 350d (400d hasn't changed much grip-wise bar a small thumb pad) really that uncomfortable to hold v the d50?
