This kit is 419.99 at Currys. Use CURX5 code to get £21 off & also get £40 from Nikon as cashback. TCB has 1.51% for Currys which can bring the price to ~£354. A very good price for this kit!

EDIT: Pls use PCWX5 code in PCWorld website to get 21 off. Thanks mks1972 for this info.

Hot for me, considering it's only a tad dearer than the D3100 kit in some places!

Many thanks. Voted hot and order placed.

You are welcome...Glad to know that it helped someone.

Cancelled my order of the Nikon D3100 and now ordered the D5100 from PCWorld (use code PCWX5). I have seen the Nikon D5100 cheaper ProCameraShop, SLRHut and few other places, but they are all grey imports, so you can not claim the £40 cashback from Nikon and do not get the 2 years Nikon warranty.

Many Thanks

I tried to order through Currys but the code didn't work for me. The PC World one did though, thanks to OP and mks1972. Just the deal on the 5100 I was waiting for.

Now to tell the missus I've ordered it

I'd love this, but bought a four thirds camera a year ago and am stuck with it (it is a good camera to be fair) wish I'd waited this is just right.

This is a great camera, have had it a year and taking awesome pictures.

how this is compared with D3200? any suggession?

Amazon has also reduced price for this camera to £402. Slightly higher then PCWORLD but if code does not work then Amazon would be better option. Your text here

Almost identical specs
but check here, and here

True the D3200 has a much higher pixel count but it might not count for much in practice. The D5100 has a flip-out screen.

if its this price next week when I get paid, I'm in! heat added

It's a pretty similar price on Amazon if anyone prefers to shop there instead or has vouchers.

Are you sure you didn't mean DSLR? Digital SLR = DSLR

Oh sorry...I meant DSLR... So it's the same :).

What different between bridge camera and DSLR then?

and DSLR is the most popular one that people are buying right now, right?
Edited by: "mackenfy" 20th Mar 2013

A bridge camera is basically a compact point and shoot camera with a better lens and have the size of a small DSLR. Here are the differences:

1. Bridge cameras has no interchangeable lens while the DSLR has the ability to do so.
2. Bridge Cameras have smaller sensors which means the captured light is less than a DSLR.
3. Bridge Cameras tend to have higher noise levels than DSLR as the sensor has to artificially capture more light.
*Noise is the red/gray dots that are all over a certain picture and makes the picture grainy.
4. DSLR lenses of the same zoom may be 2 to 5 times larger than the Bridge Camera lens.
5. You get more accurate shooting with the DSLR because what you see on the view finder is exactly what you see through the lens.
6. The image on the viewfinder of the Bridge camera is only an image slightly higher than the actual lens itself and you may get a slightly lower angle compared to what you see on the viewfinder.
7. the DSLR has many more accessories to go with it while the Bridge cameras generally has fewer items to go with it.

It seems apparent that DSLR cameras are better. However, the size and lower zoom for the same price might be a turn off for some people

Thank you so much, Bunnyfux

Great camera, I bought on 3 months ago from this deal. The Quidco eventually tracked for me after I raised a claim and the Nikon cash back was £55 then so I got it for £315ish.

It was £402 yesterday night even when i checked but looks it went back to £419.99 now.

Had this camera over a year and it's great, hot from me!

this or canon 650D. ohh cant decide

I have the same confusion but end up buying this after reading various reviews as there are not many difference between the two model. Price factor is also one of the reason to go for this together with reviews.

I was fortunate enough to get the d5100 twin lens kit for £330 after cashback on the John Lewis pricematch deal a while ago. It's my first SLR and I'm really happy with it. I spent ages beforehand deciding between Canon 600D vs. Nikon d5100 vs. Nikon d3200 but obviously jumped at the John Lewis deal. My friend has the 600D and I think the ergonomics are better (bigger grip, better feel to the buttons, etc.), but the d5100 compares well in all the reviews in terms of image quality so I'm happy with it.

They're both brilliant. Toss a coin!
Actually, check out the prices of the lenses you're going to want and decide which brand best suits you.

Yeah, as a previous contributor said, it was down to £402... It'll come down again, probably much further before the cashback offer ends.

Between Nikon and Canon - has to be Nikon. Between 3200 and 5100 - depends how confident you are. Remember the 3200 has a better guide function for beginners on their first SLR which in the first two weeks of having it has taught me more than most SLRs that I have tried in the past. I love love love Nikons. I love my 3200 as well.....I had P90 before which and the flip out screen but overall am happy to have compromised that for the 24 gezillion pixels and a superb guide mode.

The non-flip out screens are good too because you get the extra buttons on the left hand side, which feel really comfortable. Feels wrong when those are missing.

The d5100 is better than the d3200, inspite of the extra megapixels I think the 5100 delivers significantly better pictures, especially at higher ISOs, I'm not overly impressed with the d5200's image quality either, unless you fancy spending another £400-£500 on a lens, I think the d5100 is sharper.
Regarding Nikon vs Canon, I think they're both pretty much the same regarding image quality. It's down to which lenses you prefer.
Don't start getting carried away with and influenced by DxOMark scores, they're meaningless junk.
