Go for the Mario Kart bundle and the Lego city undercover game. They are easy to play for little ones. My son is 5 and loves the Lego games

Is just awkward all round. Look how high up the X,Y,A,B buttons are for starters. Just not comfortable, that is the equivalent of your buttons on a 3DS being beside the top screen. And if you have wondered why you never see people playing the 3DS flat like a 2DS is, that is because it is a terrible way to play games. Just a dreadful unit. I have lost track of how dreadful it actually is... I don't believe it even plays some 3DS games, and it has no NFC. Imagine playing M7K online multiplayer, you would be totally handicapped if your on a 2DS and at a major disadvantage.

My son loves his and he’s 4 he has a hour a day and gets excited to play mario kart

I had a 2DS for a while, found it really comfortable. Great deal!

perfect my older boy had this now my 6 year old wants one

My child does not use the 3D, and never has. I still would never buy them a 2DS though, especially the ghastly, rigid flat design.

A new flat style 2DS at £36 +£5 voucher may well go hot, but that doesn't make it a good buy or a good product. That just means there is a lot of people who think £36 is a good price to be able to play 3DS, but are not aware just how uncomfortable the unit actually is to use, how clumsy and basic it is, and what a poor all round gaming experience it offers, compared to other 3DS console options.

I bought a 2DS last year to catch up with the latest 3DS games. Didn't need the 3D because I don't use it (and neither do a good percentage of 2/3DS gamers). It was surprisingly comfortable, and I got pretty much all my money back when I resold it. The 2DS and the New 2DS are good options for those that don't want the 3D functionality.

My only gripe with the 2/3DS family is that after the Switch, these are really showing their age now. Still if you want portable gaming on the cheap with a HUGE library of quality games, you can't do much better. Heat!

Despite what is being said the 2ds is the best designed console in the DS range. It is solid, the shape stops it from slipping out of your hands, no need to bother with flipping the lid which can also be broken on the hinges of the 3ds. Perfect handheld for kids and adults alike. The only reason not to buy one is the Nintendo switch is here but ofcourse at an entirely different price point

@2minutenoodles Are you seriously suggesting those of us who play on 3DS and 3DS XL consoles are struggling away because they keep slipping out of hands, because of their poor inferior design, to that compared of the 2DS. I am still dumbfounded and struggling with "the 2ds is the best designed console in the DS range" part to be honest though!

Alas the hinge myth comes up again. Even if 3DS models (and this must include the new 2DS hinge design model to), had an actual hinge issue - which they don't, it wouldn't be a problem for years, by which time everyone and the world will have moved on from 3DS gaming.

No one is saying this is better than 3ds..

Most people buy these for children because #1 3d is not good for their eyes at a young age #2 Its better built to withstand being dropped (no hinge) and #3 its cheap.

I actually bought one for my nephew who is 4 and he loves it.

#1 3d is not good for their eyes at a young age, #2 Its better built and …#1 3d is not good for their eyes at a young age, #2 Its better built and will withstand being dropped and #3 its cheap.

Right, so each bit at a time,

(1) the 3D is not an issue on a 3DS Console unit, and is only made an issue by 2DS purchasers or owners trying to justify how great it apparently is in any way then can find. Not only do all 3DS consoles have a toggle on/off button for the 3D, but the toggle button is even very easily over ridden and can be disabled in the system settings with parental controls, it takes a parent about 20 secs to do that at most. That the 3DS offers 3D gaming does not really change that the 2DS is an uncomfortable unit to play, especially for kids who have smaller hands. Most wee kids don't use 3D as it goes anyway.

If any console is bad for kids at a young age eyesight it is the 2DS and small size 3DS too to be fair with their pokey little tiny screens. If your worried about your kids eyes, don't be cheap and get them a XL unit with the larger screens.

(2) It is not better built. We have had the 3D myth and the hinge myth, now the old drop myth. Feeling all mythed out here.

(3) I agree, its cheap, tat usually is, but still not worth £36 for a old style 2DS unit.

Mariokart is superb. Covers racing. I'd pair that with Kirby, Luigi or Mario 3D.
Kirby is a very gentle platformer that looks beautiful and while it's very easy to beat, finding all the collectables is very difficult and it's full of fun little gameplay ideas. Lego City on xDS isn't great, there are better Lego games. Luigi's Mansion is superb. It's spooky rather than scary, packed full of fun little moments and character. Mario 3D is a very polished game that maybe isn't as clever or inventive as the other 2 but it's a rock solid platform game.

The Zelda game and the Dogs game are also excellent but I'm not sure I would recommend the former for a 6 year old or the latter to a stereotypical boy that likes XBox.

BTW, the 2DS is not a hardy, kid-proof 3DS. They are no more drop-proof than anything else with an LCD screen in them. They're just a lot cheaper to replace if they get broken.
The guy complaining about it not running some 3DS games and having no NFC is comparing it to the "New 3DS" not the original 3DS - which also doesn't have NFC and can't run some games (Xenoblade, SNES Virtual Console, possibly the new Fire Emblem Warriors game). He's right, but he's also being a little unfair to the 2DS. This will play any White Boxed 3DS game, but any really demanding ones (Pokemon Sun and Moon and Hyrule Warriors are standout examples) may not run terribly well. He's 6. He's not a Digital Foundry contributor. Don't worry about it.

One final note : If you get him Kirby and don't have the 3D slider you are missing out on some truly gorgeous 3D work. And now you will ALWAYS know that when he fires it up. You're welcome

Obviously everyone will have their own opinion, which is fine. However personally I think the 2ds is a great deal. By your £36 mention, you're paying under a third of the price of a 2ds xl which essentially gets the same job done. There are few games that only work on the new series, but imo this is a great choice for kids. I'd rather spoil them with 4 extra games (or more if you get nintendo select versions) than a console with no game. There's nothing necessarily wrong with not doing so, but it seems to be a very appropriate device for some. I personally paid £120 for a 3ds (old one) and am impressed with the library and satisfied with the screen size, but less impressed with the coating and the flimsy analog stick that I needed to replace. Plus I needed to buy a charger. It does make me wonder how much nintendo make on the more expensive units since they're not ones to sell at a loss.

You've missed the point of this, it's for kids not man hands. Nintendo know adults don't want 3D games and that's why they made the 2DS XL.

@SkilledNutter again I would have to refer you to a 3DS unit is only 3D if a parent wants it to be. Why would Nintendo make a unit for kids with more distance between the various controls than other existing units though, if it were truly for kids? Kids can play it easily. How can controls be awkward

I own the Special Edition Pokemon Yellow clear 2DS. I dont bother with 3D, its comfortable to hold and play. Ignore the haters, for the price point its an excellent handheld for wee kids and the big ones alike lol Great library of games, can play older DS games also and the prices of the best games have come down for this.

Best combo would be MK7 bundle and Super Mario 3D world. And its a great platformer to play without the 3D that it was originally designed for. Have some heat OP!

MK7 Bundle, and Mario 3D one racer and one platformer best combo in my opinion to start your son off with! The 2DS is a fantastic wee handheld and especially at this price.

Also Luigi's Mansion is a good game, would go for Mario 3D World or Luigi's Mansion.
Edited by: "pauledwardking1" 30th Oct

noooo what were you thinking op?! a 2ds post will only incite confused hate from you know who.

What would you pair with the mario bros game? My daughter likes platform games. She is 5. Is Zelda a good shout?

Does anybody else click on a 2DS deal just to see NoahsDads rants? It's been the same old tripe for ages now! If somebody wants to buy a 2DS then they will buy a 2DS. Why get so worked up over it is beyond me?!

The 3D is only good for Mario 3D, it's the only game I have used it on. Yes the New 2DS XL is better but you can't get a New 2DS XL with 2 very good games for £80, so there is no point in comparing them.

Zelda is probably a bit too deep for 5 years old. Go with Luigi's Mansion 2.

Nintendogs. It's like a tamogotchi, you pick a dog, name it, teach it tricks, feed and clean it, enter it into competitions. It's voice and stylus driven, very user friendly. I have 3 daughters, all love it. Luigi's Mansion or Kirby would also be good calls though there's a lot of crossover between Kirby and Mario

A hinge will break on anything if bent backwards, or maybe dropped. I wasn’t suggesting all 3DS owners have Tourette’s. I owned a 3DS and preferred the 2DS. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but you are trying to force yours on others in this thread. You are acting as though the 2DS has slept with your mum or as though this is a teenage console war. They are both Nintendo products and you have a Mario avatar. Not even sure why I am humouring you with a response to be honest lol.
