It brought the arcade home, had scores of amazing games that were up to 30 quid a piece cheaper than the big SNES exclusives/timed releases, aesthetically pleasing sat next to your 14 inch Sony CRT at the time and best of all was a great stick to beat septic ignorance with blimey even now lots of them never knew it was only called the Genesis over there and the Mega Drive everywhere else.

The youngers don't realise how lucky they are with the price of video games nowadays, 40 quids for your Sonic's and Desert Strikes was wallet busting dough back then but 70 quid for Streetfighter 2 and 60 quid for Starfox if you were on an apprenticeship that was your week's wages 25 years ago!

Saw John Lewis in Nottingham had a cabinet full of the grey one a few months ago when 'nobody' else had any stock. I'm sure Nintendo are playing with supply stock to the usual go to gaming retailers to keep the hype going and it's definitely working.
They seem to be available online at Nintendo and Argos' eBay store as well if anybody is interested.
Nintendo have released new stock now a few new games are coming out. They know what they are doing.

Normally I like to defend my purchases, but I can't defend it much at the moment as it doesn't get touched in my house. The Wii U stills wins hands down. If you have a Wii U with a few games I'd say to hold off until Mario Odyssey imo.

I have Zelda (played a lot initially), Splatoon 2 (replica to Wii U version), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (same), Arms (decent), Street Fighter (it's street fighter), Bomberman (losing to impossible computer players gets frustrating).
A console turning into everything that was great about the WiiU but nobody wanted at the time - for whatever reason. Recommended.

The power of marketing! The Wii U is the best console I have ever owned. Period.

Wouldn't quite say the best console I've ever owned, I'd probably say that was the Mega Drive, but it was the most maligned considering how many top games it had..........that the Switch has inherited/borrowed to media receptions of "groundbreaking"

Well said Chas
I had a SMD and agree it was one of the best, but I thought the 8-bit SMS was better. It had a great selection of games, a number of good Sega-made games and a lot of what were the current and popular arcade titles.

Too many to name them all but some of my favourite SMS games included Shinobi, Rastan, Wonderboy 1 +3, AKMW, R-Type, Populous, Double Dragon, Fantasy Zone.

Yeah have to say the Master System definitely laid the foundations for the huge success of the Mega Drive. Talking of arcade to MS ports I have very fond memories of our mates from St Mark's bunking off the afternoons crowded round whoever was smashing it on Wonderboy during the lunchtime break in the Happy Shopper next to the Humming Bird in the late 80's

That said the jump from 8 bit to 16 bit that came with the Mega Drive was such a huge thing and where everyone got Sonic bundled with the console to make you scream "wow" it was Streets of Rage that had everyone wanting to snatch the controller off whoever was playing!

Thank you but it's merely stating the obvious, video games was stupid money for the consoles though there was no shortage of cheap Jekyll copies for the Amiga posse was there.

Jesus being the scally I was I remember being able to chore 3 copies of Starfox that was on display by the counter at the local Our Price from right under the nose of the dippy goth student serving behind the ramp and took them up to this geezer who had a stall selling console games on North Weald Market the following day who quite literally bit my hands off for them when I said 90 quid for the three people are expecting thevmassive brand new games for 30 quid legit from the supermarkets and big online retailers these days

Imo the RRP for the Wii U just wasn't worth it. It cost more than the competition but didn't perform as well. It meant that the 3ds, ps4, XBO and PC were generally better bets. Imo the switch isn't there for me for value, but it does have the benefit of being a true portable. While it isn't as good the the home console competition, it still is the best quality handheld we have designed for gaming.

Although the SNES is easily my favourite, choosing the second is very difficult as I thought the Megadrive, N64, PSOne and Dreamcast had some superb games. Even the Saturn holds a special place in my heart.

If Nintendo could produce more, I'm sure they would.
The nand flash storage is in short supply, so they are competing with Apple (who I'm sure are being given priority). Add in the fact that their sole touchscreen manufacturer is now in financial troubles, again could be made even worse by Apple. With Apple likely moving to OLED, which 'Japan Display Inc.' can't provide, and "right now Apple accounts for over 50% of their revenue".

So I wouldn't expect Switch console units to be gathering dust on shelves any time soon.

Nearly as in short supply as the plastic compound and NFC chips required to satisfy Amiibo demand eh

The Dreamcast bringing Internet browsing to a games console at a very competitive price does deserve special praise to be fair.
There was a good number of Electronic Arts games for the SMD like Desert Fox & Jungle Strike, Road Rash 1+2 were all superb. Lots of games too that really pushed the limits of the SMD (remember it was only a 16-bit). Toejam & Earl 1 was another favourite of mine and great 2 player stuff. Again so many games could name, best keep it short.

Had debates about Road Rash in the modern era many times, if ever a game was made for online multiplayer it's that! Toejam and Earl what a cool game that was! Speedball 2 another blinding game from that era!
Was tempted by the Switch but the choice of games at the moment is pitiful. Just picked up a Wii U 32GB from CEX for £110 to get me back into Nintendo... and as a bonus it already had Mario Kart 8 pre-installed I'll wait for more games before making the jump
Forget your console chit chat nonsense, Amiga was the games machine... Then PC for giving us FPS (Doom - still my Dave game of all time)... Then PS seeing MGS and GT blew my mind. Nothing exciting since then 😪
Me too, have bought almost all the Nintendo consoles (NES apart) and had insisted "wait for Mario Odyssey". However, visited my brother who has recently bought one and impressed so have ordered one with Splatoon 2 and Bomberman R for the kids (alledgedly). Think it is brilliant although can't see a huge leap from Wii U which, I maintain, is a brilliant console. My Switch is arriving today...
£310 for Mario Kart and £320 for Splatoon - the deal price depends on the game you choose

The usual. Create hype. Fanboys will do the rest. Keep re-releasing games from your old library. Works everytime so why change the formula now? Nintendo know their loser er fanbase.

Again we are in agreement on all that. I don't really understand why Road Rash has not been redone for modern day gaming. I could not see it on the Switch as it is another EA game is it not? I'd honestly be tempted to buy a PS or XBOX just for Road Rush though, especially if with online multiplayer.
Without a doubt the best time in my life was when I owned a ZX Spectrum 128k and at the same time believed american wrestling was real. Man, those were the days.

Maybe we should do some online petition to EA to sort out getting a shiny new Road Rash?

Nowhere near as real as Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks though!

Yeah it's just Nintendo fans who do that. Anyway, anyone seen any good deals for that Crash game that's top of the PS4 charts?

Yeah Wii U on its own wasn't great. A really good console once hacked and full of emulators though
Cheers op, nabbed one. Not had a nintendo since Gamecube! So far, so good.. different type of gaming experience to a PS4/Xbox, but a welcome one as even the mrs enjoys mario kart on it!
There is something remarkably off quay about how a standard Switch at RRP gets heat in the hundreds whilst the limited edition 'day one' Project Scorpio Xbone X at RRP goes freezing in the hundreds?

Are the sheep not believing the hype...

Maybe they see it as overpriced and they see the switch as value for money?

We have a bunch of console fans at work and only one is showing love for the Scorpio..
