Is this a sleeve that's put over the current joy con shell? Or is this the shell that we get with the switch - meaning we'd now have X2 of these...?

You'd have X2, it's just a red painted grip not a shell for the old one.
Good find. Heat for the price and don’t need amazon prime…(y)

This is a third party grip (licensed by Nintendo). A lot of people say these PowerA grips are better than the official Nintendo ones that come with it. I’m tempted to agree; they’re a slightly better shape. I got one for £5 from Tesco earlier this year, but don’t use it often.

I find the PowerA grips less comfortable because they don't taper up to the shoulder buttons as nicely as the Nintendo grips, and they are definitely a lower quality fit for the joycons than the Nintendo ones. However they are a cheap player 2 option!
OOS now.

Each to their own
I haven’t used either that often so can’t say which I prefer but the grip has a better shape, and the majority of reviews I saw preferred this one. And yes, well worth it for Player 2.
OOS 😪😪😪😪😪😪
