Worth noting that Nintendo sell "family" packs of 8 memberships for less than £35. There is no DNA test so, y'know, the family part isn't really strict.

If their online infrastructure wasn't 15 years behind the competition I'm sure people wouldn't be so apprehensive about paying.

What is included for this price?
Once you redeem the code how long is the code valid for? I'm assuming 12 months? As this is going to be a Christmas present.
Santa got my 8 year old daughter a switch, I think, does she need to be online? I don't really want weirdos online with her!!

Unfortunately for the best games like splatoon this is a must to get the best out of it. You can only chat on the switch if you hook up your mobile phone too

I'd say no. I'm not sure what she'd want to really play online. To be honest there's only a handful of supported games. All the free to play games such as Fortnite don't require the online subscription.

Ok thanks, it'll be the Mario type games she wants, so hopefully won't need it.

At this price I can now tell the people complaining about Switch Online that it’s 32p a week instead of 35p!
Somehow I think they’ll still complain.

Dont need online to play fortnite
Does this get you any games or discounts or is it purely to play online?

Allows you to play online games (some games like Fortnite work without) and save your games in the Cloud
Still refuse to pay for this until they get a better way of using online chat and sort out the whole friend request / online party thing.
I could Google this, but this might help someone else so I'll ask here.

For Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee do you need the paid online service to trade Pokemon with people over the internet?

£14.32 from South Africa store if you use fee free card. I got mine from there and there are no issues buying from south africa and transferring your account back to the UK.

Seen people on here selling 7/8 of the memberships for £5ish a year, so they themselves essentially get it for free.

So for Mario games she won't need the online outside of Mario kart which has an online mode but it's definitely not necessary to enjoy the game. Splatoon you would need the online but Im struggling to think of any other games you need it for right now!

To add to this, if the game supports local co-op (basically any split screen multiplayer, where kids might want to play side by side on the couch etc, for example mario kart), you still don't need it.
The online services main sell is for somebody to play a game online with their friend down the road. Other benefits include a cloud where you can back up your game save, access to a handful of NES games (think there are around 20?), and apparently some discounts on the online store.
Nintendo is also a lot more restrictive than the online services of the likes of xbox or playstation. You can't chat through the console itself. Annoying for grown up me, but great for a parent of an 8 year old!
I've not got it yet, as I play 1 player or local co-op games almost exclusively, and at the moment I don't feel I need it yet.
If you use the FB code , then it drops down to £16

It just allows you to play online multiplayer games similar to xbox live or PSN.

So, in Mario Kart you can play multiplayer locally on your TV with upto 3 others which doesn't require online, or you can play multiplayer online against 15 other people round the world which does require online.

Ledge!!!

So if I wanted to play Mario Kart with my family in my house could I just play by buying a online pass rather than buying the game?

you could play by buying a switch and mario kart, and however many joycons you need to play it (there may be a limit to local players though).
If you were only playing on one switch, on one tv? You do not need the online pass.
You would only need the online pass if you wanted to play against somebody in another house/town/country etc.
Update - just googled it, you can have up to four players locally on one switch. So you would need four joycons (or pro controllers, but joycons are less expensive).

Ah I see now.
Yep you would need to buy the game (physical or digital from the store) in order to use it.
The online pass only works as a means to allow you to play with other players online.
your getting it mixed up with the xbox game pass.
i dont think anyone else has a subscription service which allows you to play AAA game title like the xbox game pass.
Cant imagine how much they would charge for a subscription to play Mario Kart even if it is a port if a Wii U game and still at £40 new even though it is a few years old now....

My cousin has Mario kart so when she came over she brought her game and 2 joy cons and we played 4 players local co-op (same house/TV) without having to pay for the online service.
if she was at home and i wanted to play agaisnt her while still at my house then i think i need the online subscription.

Can anyone confirm do you need a family pack if you have kids who have nintendo accs and wish to play online. Or can you like PS+ and Xbox Live have 1 primary account which then allows ALL users on that system online access/play.
From what i've understood you need to to have individual online acc's for every user wishing to have online play - therefore the family pack is better vfm (if you can call it that). If thats the case its comparable to the prices PS+ & XBox Live charge for their services and we get a far inferior product.
Regarding the family account would there be any reason why I couldn't purchase the family account and then put a post up on the misc section offering spots in the account? It would work out £3.93 per person for 12 months, I'd be happy to purchase the family plan when I had 7 other people interested

No issues, and other members have already done exactly this.

Perfect, I'll do that then, I've already got 4 actual friends that are in

What is included for this price?

20 emulation NES games at launch & a nintendo switch app for your phone so you can speand more money on them
Doubt they'll give you any free AAA games like PSN & Xbox Live GOLD. It just goes to Nintendo. You're better off putting that money into a charity box or treating the kids to KFC
