Whatever your feelings about Nintendo's online service, it's starting tonight.

You get a week of free access and then it's £17.99 for a year. This is the cheapest I've found for a year, so far.

You get online play, cloud saves/backups and "free" NES games to play.

Be interesting to see how the service evolves over time, they've got a long way to go to catch up with MS and Sony!

This is a poor move from Nintendo. Didn't mind paying 18 pounds. However you are being compelled to buy the Family sub at a much higher price to cover anyone who uses the console online - e.g. Fifa, Mario Kart, Splatoon. On PS4 and Xbox you can have multiple users covered by a single sub on one console. NES games are no incentive. My last PSN sub cost about the same price as the Nintendo Family one and has so far included many premium titles.

Will my son need this to play fortnite as of tomorrow?

Free to play games don't require a subscription
This is so anti-consumer it saddens me to see gamers defending it. It literally has 0 value. You can't communicate with friends from the system, NES titles aren't accessible without signing in after 7 days even when you have paid. Plus its NES titles when they could easily do N64, GC titles etc. Cloud saves don't work for certain games and delete themselves anyway when your membership expires. So you are basically locked in if you prioritise that.

As someone that loves to play Splatoon 2 online, what do I gain from this? The right to keep playing by paying £16 a year. Yeah I really see the value, but nvm because it's so cheap right. [sarcasm]
Such a cash grab

I wanted to know if for example me and my fiancé have a switch each and I was to buy the family one will it still work an active subscription for her account on her switch or would she need her own one? That’s what I’m confused by haha
Don't forget you can share a family subscription with friends etc - makes it under £5 year if you group together for a family membership and split the cost
Thanks for sharing

It's like £8 cheaper from the South African eShop compared to the UK eShop price. Not sure yet whether there would be any issue buying from there
I still don't know if I can just get my son online with a single account. Because he's under my account as a child I just figured Nintendo wanted to gouge £32 out of me just so my lad can find Luigi Balloons.

I bet I'm right.
hot. pretty sure i'll just buy it direct from the eshop though to earn a few gold points.

I mean, you pay for the game then you have to pay to play it online but if it's free then they don't want to charge you.

It's tied to accounts, not consoles, so both accounts would be part of the family subscription and their respective Switches would both be 'primary' consoles.

Yeah the family one would cover both of you, You just need to add her to your family on Nintendos website, Ive got myself and 4 others in my "family" ready to use it

So basically as long as the accounts are on the one console with the subscription active all accounts will get the subscription yeah?

Family subscription is £31.49 a year. Seems quite cheap considering 1 device is £17 for the year.
I am curious what kind of 'Special discounts' will be offered to those, who purchase this subscription... I guess the time will tell. The rest of perks, for me personally, are quite irrelevant

It's tied to the account so it does not matter if you have 1 switch with 8 accounts or 8 switches with one account each as long as the are added to the family subscription.
That's how i read it on the FAQ Here

Q.
If I have multiple Nintendo Switch consoles, will I have to pay for each of them?

A.
No. The Nintendo Switch Online membership is not for one Nintendo Switch console, but for one Nintendo Account. As long as it's linked to your Nintendo Account, you can use the Nintendo Switch Online service from any Nintendo Switch console.

Q.
I purchased a Family Membership. Do I need to set up anything so other members of my family can use it on their Nintendo Accounts?

A.
You need to set up a Nintendo Account Family Group.

What is a Family Group?
Amazing price voted hot but it seems to me they are literally charging you for something they have always offered for free all of a sudden!

Yeah, You log in, go to family settings then you can send her an email invite, after shes added you can make her an Parent/Guardian in the family so theres no restrictions and she'll be good to go.

They did say at launch that it would only be free temporarily. It has been free for longer than initially expected, it was only a matter of time before they started charging.

I think the family price is great for 8 devices. Where xbox and psn are users covered on 1 device
Have gathered a group of 8 friends so we gonna get a family sub and pay just under £4 each a year

Oh I was aware of it but you are getting next to nothing for your money. The majority of games are p2p so no dedicated servers to pay for. A good chunk of the games won't support cloud saves and I own almost all of the new games from the Virtual console.

£18 per year 😳

Are they literally charging for online access or does it include other perks

Not a Nintendo user so curious

Save Backups... As much as I find it annoying that they can't just let us slap em on a usb stick i'm happy to have save backups now.
(theres more than this btw)
