Nintendo has released Switch Online, the mobile app that will enable Switch owners to game online. The good news is you can now download Switch Online on Android and on iOS. The Bad news is it isn’t yet functional. It should come online on July 21st, however,to coincide with the release of Splatoon 2

Image was borrowed from Totalbiscuits twitter account. According to Nintendo this is the optimal way to play and chat to friends on the Nintendo Switch.

Now I like my Nintendo Switch but the whole app thing and the things you need to chat with friends is a joke.

Agreed. I like Nintendo..... They make some classic games and characters. However as time goes on, they haven't really got a clue. They would make a excellent software company in making games only. They need to steer away from hardware, consoles.
Before the fan boys start crying, I am a neutral gamer, have all the consoles over the years and I only care for good gaming.
This is one of many reasons why my switch has been left in the cupboard one month the after release.

That's why discord exists. Bought the zelda chat earbuds but quality is so poor that I'm not going to do the same with the Splatoon headphones, which are more expensive and more complicated.

True but for a games console you shouldn't have to use discord to talk to friends on the same console. Or use a silly app on your phone or tablet. You should be able to invite your friends to a party via the console and chat that way which is a very basic feature in 2017. This is just poor from a service that from next year will be a paid service.
The app is made even worse by voice comms being dropped if your phone goes to a lock screen oO
