What's the playerbase like on this? Do you ever actually encounter other players? I heard rumours it was far too big for the amount of players
They've updated the game a lot but the base game loop is the same. Go to planet, laser stuff, collect blocks with an inventory that's far too small, craft upgrades, laser more stuff, craft more upgrades, etc

Genuinely could not stand it. Also lost my ship due to a bug during the tutorial so...

How many hours do you have on it?
Played it for 20mins, kept dieing of extreme cold. Turned it off.

You can play it directly multiplayer but you can go off anywhere in the universe on you own , any game can be opened up to friends at any time from the menu .
Also there is a place called the anomaly where there are always other players as its like a shared space station , you can talk and accept missions with other people . You can't just bump into other players tho , its not a mmo
The main game is very solo based tho and there is a decent amount of stuff to do although most is pretty optional and you could just make a beeline to the center of the galaxy although that would take a long time

You've got to get to a cave (or make your own) until your temperature recovers.

Well yeah but it is quite a way away from you when you first start, and I had no idea what I was doing

It tells you to repair your helmet and scan for sodium . Although saying that on both survival and permadeath its pretty hard to get enough sodium and oxygen to get off that first planet (until you realise you can make oxygen canisters out of di hydrogen and sodium by refining cave marrows)

It's not primarily a multiplayer experience, you could play for 100 hrs and not see a planet another player has visited. If you want to see other players though, you just visit the nexus (available in every system) where there's other players and co-op missions. You can also play with friends. Eventually you get the ability to portal to worlds with player bases or the community planets.

Except the game is as much about base building now as it is exploring. It also has plenty of quests if that's your thing. It remains very grindy though.

The grinding was one of the things that put me off purchasing originally. Just wanted to see how much it had actually changed before i considered it. Thanks for the input
