Original Poster

still a hot deal as would need to buy airtime to use the phone anyhow.

I've bought phones a few times from Argos where this has been stipulated, the last being the half price 3 mobile Huawei handset they had at xmas, but I've never ended up needing to buy the top-up. Might be different with this one as it is so cheap.

Gd price.

Need someone to got and buy it to confirm whether we need to top-up?

I have reserved one and will go at lunch to pick up. If I can manage to get it for £4.99 without buying the top up then I will buy and post here to let you know.

no wont let you buy it through self serve.

what network do you need to buy the credit for?

This is essentially £15 all in, so OP should change the title.
These were going for a tenner (no credit required) at morrisons the other week

Any idea if this is unlocked?

I can confirm this - just tried to buy on self service and machine said it could not process and would have to go to the till. Went to the till and they mentioned the i had to buy £10 credit, so told them I was not interested.

Agree that since there is no actual way you can get this for £4.99 the title of the thread is incorrect.

went in to argos to buy this phone the staff said i had to buy the £10 airtime she said it is not a voucher that you can put on your own sim card. it is a card where you register your details maybe sim register .co.uk somebody correct me if i am wrong. but still a good deal for someone.

Does the airtime expire?

Does the airtime expire?

i think on orange if you do not make a chargable call within 180 days the airtime is removed.

will do for me until i find a phone i like.

Title should state + £10 top up as the nazi's at argos strictly enforce the policy. Its not ok to post a deal and not include postage charges and the same goes for this

you can only buy ONE PHONE from Argos for the rest of your life (dont laugh thats what the manager in my local argos told me when i tried to buy 2) I said ill come back tomo then he said no your allowed one per customer for ever. he wouldnt put it in writing like

what a mug

can get it for £7.50 plus £10 air time in Carphone

can get it for £7.50 plus £10 air time in Carphone

You can get the same one in Carphone Warehouse for £7.50 plus £10 credit, and it will be unlocked. I did it the other day.

'tis £12.36 in Tesco (on vodafone, no top up included/required), but its on the 200 extra clubcard points promo. If you take the points to be worth £8 in rewards, that makes the phone effectively £4.36, if your heart is set on it. A few other phones around the same price on various networks...I imagine its posted on here somewhere.

it is actually £4.95 not £7.50 I don't know where you got this price from.... here is the link

We just might have got the point.

Im voting this cold, because the price is incorrect and with the top up that is required, its nothing special.

Generally Argos will sell locked stock. Carphone are doing the same phone for 4.95 with a £10 top up and it's an unlocked handset.

If you are an existing Virgin pay n go customer you DO NOT have to buy the top up.

This is a shlte deal. VERY MISLEADING by op- NOT MENTIONING £10 TOP-UP REQUIRED. Bit sneaky matey.

Oh and i do NOT "need to buy airtime anyhow" as i was going to use my orange contract sim.

Waste Of Time - reserved for nothing!

Nazi's?

Do you even know why there is £10 top up rule on nearly ALL pay n go phones.

Nice emphasis on the all, instead of the NEARLY. There is no such rule, some retailers do this to make the price of the phone seem more attractive - same technique that ryanair use.

CPW claim it is to combat fraud (but if you don't want to use a CC you can pay £20 instead, thereby negating the fraud excuse), which is obviously not the case.

Title is misleading. I just reserved 5 then read the post:oops:. can anyone please ammend the title to say that you must purchase 10.00 airtime to get this?

Cheers

The reason for the top-up is to stop people buying phones to export abroad were phones are much more hard to come-by and rich picking can be made. Same reason why Argos will only sell you one handset at a time.

Yeah, for argos to make more money. We all know that handsets are sold cheaply and they make the money back on topups. Thats fine but other retailers dont feel the need to do it. Its argos making sure they get the extra £10 or in some cases £20 topup money in the till. This basic phone is £7.49 at tesco and you dont need to top up

Guess how much profit argos make from the extra £10 top up.

Mobiles phones in the Uk are subsidised by networks. They make you top up to increase the chances of you using there networks.

if you got issues buying the ten pound top up. try n buy an unlocked handset without a sim card and topup then see the price difference.

re: forced top up

its to stop "box breaking"

immigrants (mainly according to the argos manager) buy cheap phones and split the box up selling parts on ebay and or sending the unit back home where they cost much more

box breaking is a bit bigger then your local indian bloke separating the parts. It's Big business. Gangs (mainly Asians) buy in bulk (subsidised here) and sell in there thousands abroad.

I know of a couple of "bosses" who a receiving upwards of a thousand handsets a week. Straight into container ships and ships aborad.

This is what networks are trying to combat.
