Ridiculous. This is an over-hyped personal opinion piece that doesn't bear much scrutiny. The CIA may have a semi-valid concern for the possible negative aspects chinese phones used by american government or whatever but I'm really not too worried about being spied on here in the UK. They should spend more time dealing with russian hacking. This strikes me as protectionist claptrap attempting to keep cheaper chinese phones from taking bigger slice of the smartphone market. And in what universe does a Mate 10 Pro cost (according to the article) as much as an iPhone 8??

So the article basically says they collect data...as does Google, Apple, Microsoft etc. If it went into more information about the exact data in the article then it would be more informative. Otherwise it kind of sounds like a buy US branded stuff and to take the heat of the whole Apple slowing down battery fiasco which recently came to light.

There may be severe issues but more research is needed to get the facts over the contents of the article. Bit like news articlies stating red wine is good for you; next day it is bad and then good again etc.
Good deal if you need one straightaway, but it was £99.99 just the other week and very likely to come down again in a week or two when the 2018 is announced/released.

I love my Nokia 5, prefer it over the similar lower budget J5's / Moto G5's other family members have. Feels like really good build quality, haven't had any issues with freezing / lag watching netflix listening to spotify or browsing internet etc. I have a sd card and save what I can to that, I've found I typically use around 10gb of the 16gb internal memory. Also android updates always seem to happen before other brands. Voted hot thanks for sharing @johnsaab1

The above comment is only my opinion having looked at the article. I'm not an expert in this field. I don't think there has been a mass scandal about say UK bank details being fraudalently used which boiled down to people using a particular Chinese branded mobile. Or the names of all there pets being leaked!

Unsure if malwarebytes and similar, plus anti virus software will pick up rogue code which captures user data.

Lots of good value mobiles being posted. What puts me off buying one from Gearbest, Banggood etc is if it suffers with functioning issues later.

GCHQ approved their telco hardware ... as they don't need to protect Cisco.
Anyway, I wouldn't buy Hauwei phones because their software updates are super crap.

I'm seriously looking at a budget Nokia now.

As others have said that is such a pathetic article, I'm cringing for them, that just made me aware that lifehacker if full of rubbish and won't bother with their information from now on.

It really is trying to prevent competition. China does the same and it works for them, so they are doing the same in kind, simple.
This or the s5?
jazzuk7776 m ago

What S5?

Do I get this or buy the Galaxy s5?
I got this from a recent cpw Vodafone deal, ended up paying about 80£ for it. Build is great, but i have found it to lag like many others have stated on other threads. Apps take a second or two to load fully, and sometimes even hang and give you a force close option (whatsapp).
It doesn't push email on time, im sure there's something freezing background data in standby. A few app notifications don't come through either.
The camera is also pants.
The screen is very good and you won't see any visible pixels even though its only a 720 display. Brightness is also great and so is the battery life.
I do miss the speed of my moto g4 in comparison to this.

There is a major RAM management bug which was introduced in the 7.1.2 update which killed all background tasks a few hours after restarting the handset. Only the foreground app would remain in memory until the handset is restarted.

The Oreo update has fixed the problem, so you should get much more reliable notifications from background tasks.

It's been good for me (by smartphone standards at least). I still have 30-40% remaining at the end of the day.

Great. Well near 2 days on emails, Web, WhatsApp and some yt.
Out of stock now

so far so good.
whatsapp launches without having to hang, the lag was most prominent in whatsapp for me.
everything feels as it should now with the Oreo update.
happy days
Nokia/HMD is killing it with updates. Hope they keep it up.

ONLY the american government is allowed to spy
if you're spending £129 I think buying a 64gb Xiaomi Mi A1 represents better value (typically £140-160)

For £30 tops you get:

Better screen
Better camera
Better battery life
Bigger modding community
Better CPU/GPU
Better audio (speakers and headphone wise)
More RAM (4gb)
More Storage (32 or 64gb)

Yeah that is a good point. No issues here luckily.

Saying Gadget-Cover insurance do cover the device, bumps the price up of course though.
