As per the deal title really. Only 720p display yes, but a lot of people still think it looks better than the 1080p screen on the Moto G5. Regular security updates (take notes please other phone manufacturers) and unlike the Moto G5 it has toughened glass.

They're a nice looking phone with a solid aluminium unibody, my wife has one. Currently on Android Nougat 7.1.2, Oreo 8 expected pretty soon.

From previous experience you don't need to buy a top up online, but you do if you buy in store, for no reasonable reason I can think of! It asks you to choose a bundle but a top up doesn't get added to the basket.

Wish my missus had an aluminium unibody

Got one of these. It's very nicely built and the screen is good quality despite it only being 720p.

It has software issues though. The latest Oreo Beta fixes the well known issues with background tasks that were present on Nougat, but it also introduces some issues with lag, sometimes the phone can be unresponsive for a few minutes after attempting to wake it from standby. There are problems receiving SMS too in all OS versions, which still has not been resolved in the Oreo Betas. Replacing the stock 'Android Messages' app with something like Textra seems to help though.

The camera is quite rubbish when using the stock camera app, but the hardware is actually quite capable of taking a good photo if you use the Camera app which has been ported from the Google Pixel phones. It makes a massive difference to image quality.

Interesting, I thought the pixel app only worked with the snapdragon 8 series? So it does work on the Nokia 8 for example. Which app are you thinking of? Thanks for the tip on sms too, my wife had noticed this issue.

Hi. Should be locked to 02, as I bought a 02 payg refurb and it was locked to 02, although my giffgaff SIM card worked perfectly in the phone, got it unlocked on eBay.

Hard to find a listing for Nokia 5 unlock codes but there are some generically offering Nokia unlock codes. Giffgaff and Tesco should work in an O2 phone but you can't use O2 or Giffgaff in a Tesco phone.

How do you find the audio quality from the speaker? At low volume speech is hissing and crackly on mine.

Are you sure about this? I can't see anyone specifically offering Nokia 5 unlocking on eBay although there are some offering Nokia unlocking. However a quick Google doesn't throw up anything saying they can't be unlocked.

they can not be unlocked cheap from ebayers by providing hacked unlocking codes, but officially through o2 they can of course.

Nokia phones in my experience can be a bit of a pain in the neck to unlock, eg I have a Nokia 130, and there doesn't seem to be many cheap unlocking code sellers on eBay as my phone is locked to ee, although I can get it unlocked officially from Ee for around £8.

Not had a problem with speaker at all. Its one of the best discreet speakers I've heard on an smartphone tbh.

Weirdly it works with the Nokia 5 and 6 too. Have a look at the Nokia 5 forums over at XDA for the download.

HDR+ makes a huge difference to image quality. It can be slow to start the app and to capture a photo though.

I've ALWAYS had a problem getting a phone unlocked by O2 for a variety of (quoted by them) reasons. Wouldn't put me off buying one from them, but it could be an issue ime.

Sigh. I love Android, but you always have to do the "what's wrong with THIS phone" song and dance before getting too involved.

Dunno why metal bodies are so interesting though. As soon as it's in the case you can't tell. And frankly my pseudo-rubbery plastic one was more satisfyingly grippy for the five minutes outside the case.
Is £ 10 (minimum) top up mandatory with this mobile? Can't seem to get through to basket without selecting one of the top up tarrif. Thanks

I did explain this in my post. You do have to select a bundle, but it shouldn't add a topup to your basket and the final total should still be £99.99

I know what you mean and for some reason it seems to be getting worse. Moto G phones were bullet proof when they first came out, I've put the reduction in quality and increase in bugginess down to Lenovo. However it's not just Android, Apple have had their fair share of goofs lately, here's the latest one (sorry for sharing a link to the Scum). https://w…em/

I'm with you all the way personally on the protective case debate, but a lot of people do like to ride bare back lol. They do feel nicer in the hand too.

All software has bugs. I can imagine an Android manufacturer putting in extra work to fix a bug like that but I can certainly imagine them not fixing it. Apple would probably execute employees every day until it was done.

It definitely should do, Tesco use the O2 network. Tesco double lock their phones so you can't use an O2 SIM in a Tesco phone, but O2 don't.
Edited by: "jazzuk777" 23rd Jan
That was my understanding. The phone arrived this morning so will set it up tonight assuming it doesnt need a sim swap.
Just to reply to myself, a Tesco Mobile SIM works in the phone with no issue at all. There is also zero O2 branding or any crapware installed which is another bonus
