EDIT: Price glitch, phone now shows as £359.99 but deal still seems to work - go to basket thanks to @TheDelBoy for the spot. See screen grab below, done after the price appeared to go up to £359.99 plus contract

2853658-hl1p9.jpgThere was a good deal for this a few weeks back and it's dropped even more - simply cancel the contract and hey presto a great phone with a great promise on updates and stock Android. Not quite up there with the flagships yet according to reviews but it has snapdragon 835 for under £350! Don't forget Quidco/TCB - could take this under £300!

Tempted....

Wish I'd gone for this phone or a Pixel 2 instead of an S8...

Anyone seen them in shop, which colour seems to be the best?

Think the camera's better on the S8 than this if it's any consolation, although this *is* like 60% of the cost, maybe almost 50% if you can get the £50 cashback...

Have Nokia made a good phone for the masses at last?

Reviews seem pretty good - it doesn't come up quite a top tier, but then it's about 50-60% of an S8 et al. Not sure how it stacks up against a G6 which is probably the only flagship at a similar price, it's cheaper than even the Oneplus. I'm a little nervy about LG phones though with all the horror stories of bootlooping.

Blue is nicer than the silver. Subjective mind.

What’s so bad about the S8? Was going to order one in a few weeks

I've just recycled my S8 and decided to stick with the Nokia 8. It's not perfect but personally I enjoy using it more than I did the S8. I'm not keen on the location of the fingerprint scanner on the S8, find the form factor a bit less pleasant to pick up and use and I'm a fan of a more 'stock' Android, which obviously doesn't come with the S8. Other than that, you can't go far wrong with the S8 either.

G6 uses the older Snapdragon 821

Nokia 8 uses the 835, same as the LG V30, HTC U11 and on par with the S8, S8+ and Note 8

Agree on the stock android front. S8 seemed to rock every other box though, nice display, a headphone jack, not too massive and a decent amount of storage. Will have another look at the Nokia.

Cheapest from a known brand, yes
Perfect timing, my iPhone is playing up and I needed another phone! Couldn't justify buying an S8 for £200 more, it just doesn't seem worth it especially with Samsungs overlay although admittedly phone itself looks much nicer.

And I've ordered it for £329.99 + £15 (minus £50 Quidco hopefully!).

Heat added
I was disappointed with the camera at first but I've got used to it now and it is capable of taking decent pics indoors and out. Shutter speed is my only quibble now, it often takes a few seconds at which point my child is no longer stood in front of the camera.

Otherwise brilliant phone, and excellent value for money. Long live NOKIA (or HMD Global)
Any fixes for the camera quality issues yet? I'm still holding out on an official update fixing the issues that others have flagged up.

Lots of people and reviews have said the camera, for a flagship, has been subpar. Slow focussing, poor image quality. Some people have tried third party camera apps to mixed results.

100 times this. Especially in low light. I appreciate that no phones are great in low light situations, but the Nokia 8 is comfortably the worst performing phone (in this single respect) that I've had in a long time (Samsung S7 Edge, S6, HTC One M8).

In every other respect it's a terrific phone, but the slow camera is so infuriating (for the same reasons as shatteredneon says - kids' unwillingness to stay completely still for the few seconds it takes) that I couldn't recommend it (unless / until they fix the issue).

Or perhaps I've just been spoilt, especially by the S7 Edge, in which the camera was magnificent.

It's not an issue - it's just not an S8 or iPhone grade camera. Slow focus is down to the optics won't be fixable with software. I use the Google Pixel APK and it takes decent pictures, it's just not as fast to focus as something like an S8 or Pixel or something like that.

It's not just a case of comparing it to the S8 or the iPhone, apparently for a dual lens camera system the low light performance is not that good. I'm willing to be proven wrong on this because I've been keeping an eye on this phone. Hardware-wise the camera SHOULD be very good but something is crippling it's performance.

(See also the comment above from piedmonds, for a flagship the slow focus/processing and the low light performance is very, very subpar)

I've taken decent low light photos with the Pixel APK. It's not got as wide an aperture as things like the S8, nor the focus pixels to enable better focusing in low light. It's also only got a basic sensor - I believe the same as on most mid-range and low end phones like the P2 and various Xiaomis.

Just to let you know by the way, I do actually own and use one every day so I'm aware of what the camera is like. It's really pretty decent under the right setup, though I never use the stock Nokia one as it's rubbish.

One thing that most people seem to share a consensus on is ditching the Nokia camera app for almost anything else.
I may bite at some point, I'm between this and upgrading my Huawei P8 to a Huawei P10 or P10 Plus. Big price difference though...

I've owned a few Huaweis and I just don't get on with them. At least with this there's a promise of fast updates (assuming they stick to them) and personally I'm finding the camera fine. I wouldn't have recycled the S8 for £340 if I didn't prefer this phone in most respects.

In truth I was also mainly using the modded Pixel APK with the S8 too, as I don't rate its performance in low light: Samsung have a tendency of trying to make night shots as bright as possible and the results always look smeary and over-processed to me. Sadly you can't set anything but the stock camera to the power button shortcut on the S8, whereas you can set anything you like as the camera app on the Nokia 8.

Why?

After being away from Samsung for several years i came back to them this year and find that although the Touchwiz interface is slicker the Samsung apps are at best average. The camera is knobbled by poor software handling when saving to file - over aggressive compression for one thing. Bixby is and probably always will be in an American language derivative and where youd want uk focussed information - such as news - its like going to CNN for the UK news - not great.
So if I could have afforded a pixel/2 at the time I would have - or a Nokia 8 if they hadn't been so ridiculously overpriced at launch.... hey ho .... I've made my bed etc...

Ps edited this for the third time as the Samsung Keyboard is shockingly rubbish. I know I can use Gboard etc - but that's my point - every key Samsung software element I end up replacing with something more usable.

I haven't gotten the obsession with Samsung for years - I can only conclude people haven't tried other phones. I don't get why more companies don't go down the Moto/Nokia route either - stock Android is great, all too often changes are a step down from usability etc. If Samsung bought out a clean model (was it HTC or someone else who bought out a Nexus style build as alternative to their standard model a few years back?), it ought to outsell the Touchwiz version...
For this price the Nokia 8 is a great buy. The only comparable phone would be the Xiaomi Mi6 but that doesn't have band 20 and is an import. I got the Nokia in the Black Friday sales and I'm very happy with it. Yes the camera is a touch slow to focus but given the hardware I definitely think it's a software issue. When it does focus the photos are good.
In use the rest of the phone is really fast and smooth.
