Nokia Lumia 630 - newly released WP8.1 phone, just £79.95 on pay as you go upgrade (Virgin/Vodafone) @ Carphone Warehouse

Just released WP8.1 phone, with a quad core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, a nice sized screen (Gorilla Glass 3 - so tough too for a budget phone!). 512MB of RAM is a slight disappointment...but only in so far as a few games won't be available for it. In actual performance terms, Windows Phone 8.1 has been heavily optimised to run on even lower spec hardware (the older 520 works great using WP8.1 Developer Preview).

The main competition would seem to be the Moto E (£69.95 from Tesco with the use of some codes)
630 vs Moto E;
(Positives);
-Snapdragon 400 vs 200
-Better camera
-8GB of internal storage AND simple way to save apps to SD card
-Cortana coming soon
-Free offline navigation
-Free offline Nokia MixRadio
-Nokia Camera app (full manual controls, including manual focus)

Neutral:
-4.5" screen vs 4.3" (the Moto E has a higher pixel density, but the Lumia is bigger (cheers krogothnx).

Negatives:
512MB RAM vs 1GB
More limited app store

New notification centre (sorry, couldn't find an English photo of a 630 displaying the notification centre...you get the idea though !)

I searched but couldn't find it?;

hotukdeals.com/sea…630

(I wouldn't have posted if I knew it was a duplicate --- but as far as I can tell, no one has posted the CPW deal?)

I think yesterdays was the same phone on contract

SCUNNERED if you do not know the difference between this deal and the one you are referencing to your statement does not help anyone . If this deal is duplicate of another previous deal then you can easily trace the previous deal ,compare it and if this one is duplicate then provide the link as a proof . It is easy to provide link on PS3,PS4 and of course PC .

I think he probably was thinking of a different Lumia deal....there are loads of them on HUKD at the mo. I'm al but certain this isn't a duplicate deal - so let's see what the HUKD public think :).
I personally think it looks like a great, no nonsense phone. It'll be nice and quick, have excellent battery life with its newer class of quad core processor...and has that Gorilla Glass 3 screen (which, in my experience with my Lumia 1020 is TOUGH! I dropped my 1020 onto a ceramic floor from chest height...no damage whatsoever. I was amazed!).
The camera on this is likely a step above those on the Moto E and even the G (Nokia's Camera app is superb...and really allows you to get creative with your photography. Full manual focus/exposure/shutter/white balance control etc)

I have Lumia 620. Very fast application operations, wi fi and 3G connection and mine in a leather case truly pocket phone to me.

If you mean the one that I posted:

hotukdeals.com/dea…701

Then that was a contract deal rather than a PAYG upgrade.

Nice ta.

Hmm could be interested at this price if I could get one sim free. I know the car phone warehouse tends to be unlocked but nokia is expensive if not.

As for the negatives, 512MB ram on Windows phone is irrelevant, so easily ignored. Limited apps is more pertinent.

is it 4g

wakkaday

is it 4g

No. For that you want the Lumia 635, which is exactly the same (as far as I know) but also has 4G. Obviously, because of that it will be more expensive though too.

Where are all the Moto G comments??

There is an early review here if anyone is interested:

Yes, you're going to really struggle with only 200,000 apps to choose from.

Does it have a front facing camera?

they are mostly rubbish b2b the store is horrible to navigate.

if you get the worldwide satnav (i.e. not restricted to 1 regios like the 520 & i think 625) this is poss worth getting as a cheap satnav to use abroad - especially if it's unlocked & you can use a local sim.

No.

How can you give 4.5" as a positive vs the Moto E's 4.3" screen (which is only a positive depending on the user) when this is only 854 x 480 vs Moto E's 960x540?

Edit: To clarify - not knocking the deal, definitely hot, just don't see how a worse pixel density can be considered better!

Thought so, no good for my teen

Its a shame, considering Microsoft own Skype. This is not even the cheapest in the range, but I guess they had to cut corners somewhere.

@ upset brown pant

Here Drive + is opened up to all phones running windows phone 8.1, including those which were limited to one region in wp8. So phones like the 520, 625 and 720 all get free worldwide navigation once updated.

The WP store has also been completely redesigned in wp 8.1.

The only downside to WP8.1 that's of concern to an everyday user is Microsoft's fixation on Bing being used instead of google. This can be fixed by downloading UC Browser, which is obviously better than IE (default for wp8.1)

The store has been redesigned in WP8.1 (vastly better!), and the worldwide navigation is now available to ALL phones regardless of price/manufacturer.

Just set Google as the default search provider!?
I use Bing - it works well for me. Never an issue....and I certainly enjoy the direct navigation links that pop up when you do a search on the browser. It makes navigation whilst driving a doddle. IE11 is also v.v.quick - and the reading mode button makes long pieces of text soooo much easier to read (no panning and pinching to zoom required....just a nice ebook reader style interface --- great for catching up on the news!)

a great price -very tempted!

how much are 620s selling for?

512mb a bit limiting if you want to play latest games, as it won't let you. Other than that, not a bad phone for the price. Win phone is excellent, only ditched my 520 for a moto g because of the awful battery life.

Not a lotta diff to Lumia 520?

Nope, not a lot of difference in price either...

Quad core vs dual (better battery life)
Bigger screen with gorilla glass 3 (far more resistant to damage. The 520's screen wasn't v.tough).
Custom built and optimised for WP8.1

If you have a 520, then it isn't much of an upgrade. But if you are new to the system, then it is definitely worth the £20 or so extra. This should really have been called the 530 to make the product lines more coherent.

True - the Here Drive + satanv is superb; pretty much on a par with my £200 Garmin dedicated satnav. Nokia owns the company which provides maps for Garmin and other satnav companies. You can download full country maps for offline use in 94 countries - no roaming data use with voice turn-by-turn navigation. It provides live traffic information in 32 countries. Even if you don't have a car you can use it for walking navigation and the downloaded maps are used in the Here Maps and also Here Transit, which provides public transport details for 700 cities in 50 countries. It certainly redraws and recalculates routes way quicker than my Garmin Nuvi 2597.

NO dual band wifi and relatively disappointing 21mpbs hsdpa but great for the price i think. Heard good things about windows so tempted to give it a try. I know moto g is an option which also has stock Android which is super smooth but anyone know if there will be another budget Nokia windows phone ? Preferably dual band wifi , front camera and 42 mbps hspda or even 4g?

Hot by the way!

The bing thing frustrates me

Having just bought a 7" tablet with Android, I would say go for it. Android is becoming a mess compared to iOS and you know where you are with Windows.

I did not know you could do that

My life feels complete

Thanks!

...but am I right in thinking Lumia 625 is better?? 4G, FF camera with flash, bigger screen (although that is something u may not want)...?

Though for me, I am happy to support an alternative to Google --- who to my mind haven't made a principled business decision in years. Advertising revenue at all costs - whether that tramples on user privacy or not. No thanks.

Just get the Lumia 925 on O2 Refresh. 4G, amazing camera, higher resolution screen, brilliant design....more than likely has dual band wifi too (it's a flagship spec device). I think it comes to about £130 or so on O2 Refresh not including cashback, or £90 with cashback...
