Original Poster

you can use calibre to convert everything to ePub

Thanks. Just what I needed after the staples and kobo fiasco! Great added and reserved

Reserved one for my brothers Christmas present. Perfect.

Shame I've bought mum's christmas presents, this would have been ideal.

I have a Kobo touch and love it. Much prefer keeping everything more open and avoiding getting stung by amazon's kindle DRM one day... So this is a fab deal - Voted hot as this Nook looks really good.... but I'm holding out for a price drop on the nook simple touch GlowLight(tm) before upgrading so I can read in bed without annoying the missus

Don't worry, she'll just find something else.

Much better than Kindle! You can borrow books from the library on this.

I have one of these and it is really good. The one thing that is missing is a self-powered lighted cover (although you can get the glowlight one for about £100). The lighted cover for kindle is expensive but very good. I guess an analogy would be the kindle is like an iphone and this is like android. Kindle only really lets you use their book store while the nook lets you put on any epub that you can get from anywhere. You can also root it to run a more stock version of android and run some apps (with a varying amount of success because of the slow screen refresh rate).

Just because you can put epubs on the nook doesn't mean that you will find them cheaper. Sometimes amazon has their books for a lower price. On average it is probably more expensive to buy from amazon but the process is lot easier. I believe that most old books can be found for free in ePub but Amazon usually charge for them.

Where do u down load books for the nook? Thanx:) x

Probably a silly question but can you read Word and PDF files on this?

And once you've rooted it you could always install Amazon's Kindle app so that you could have access to the entire Kindle library too.

PDF - Yes but PDFs don't work that well on e-readers. Word docs would need to be converted to epub. Calibre can convert text docs to epub - done it on many occassions.

Seems like a good deal. Good reviews.

thanks

I've got one on order from John Lewis for £79. Do you think they'll price match?

In a word no

How do you get the £5 voucher?

PS: Nevermind, I found out after reserving. Please note you can also get another £5 off by using an American Express card and registering through Foursquare.

Thanks for adding to the discussion. Do you want to tell everyone why it isn't better?

Much prefer this to the kindle. With the new fast refresh mode it's like having a greyscale tablet.. It updates so fast! battery life is amazing too.

Looks like a good deal

Does it have a light?

Looked at them all today, and aside from the fact that they all do the same thing, the design of the kindle is significantly better. The Nook and Kobo just look like the kindle's fat cousins by comparison.

which is better for a range of free/ borrowing books ? Kindle , Nook or Kobo and how do prices for books compare as obviously not everything for a kindle can be downloaded to Kobo or Nook .

Trying to work out which of the 3 is best value as a beginners ereader ...

kindle is much better.

The kindle is a locked down and fragile piece of junk.
They only last a few months.

Yes they will, just drop them an email and you will get a refund once you have received your order

Imported one from US last year, very nice bit of kit with amazing battery life. It's nice to have physical page turning buttons as well as a touch screen, this was why I chose this rather than the kindle touch. One unexpected benefit is that you can use it with a waterproof cover, without buttons not possible.

Thoroughly endorse the use of calibre to load books on (very easy to convert to different formats)

Anything non-Amazon is ok with me. Hot.

Well that is scientific ?!? Lets ignore all data that doesn't hold to my preconceived opinion.

Hopefully that question isn't allowed to be answered on here.

Don't want to deal with Amazon, so going for one of these tomorrow. Cheers OP.
