Plenty of free alternatives available on-line (e.g. AVG antivirus) or within Windows (Windows firewall is actually quite good!). And, for anyone tempted to quote performance figures for antivirus software, NONE of the are 100% effective, but most of them manage performance in the high 90-plus percentile.

Also check out majorgeeks.com for lots of other freeware/shareware.

I thought the whole point of hot uk deals was to find someting at the cheapest price. This may not be useful to you but I believe it to be a good deal for what I wanted. I have tried various free online anti-virus and to be honest I found them useless and the pop ups that come with them drove me mad.

I notice that nobody has told me where they can find this cheaper but are still voting cold.

I'm no expert, but it's probably due to it being a poor piece of software.

Yes but the point of hot uk deals is to find the best price and this is the best price for this. I've been using norton for a couple of years now and I think it's great.

Norton used to be a pile of rubbish with poor performance, however if you've not looked at this for a year or two you'll be surprised. Blistering performance and great detection rates.

For those of you who want to get into the arguments around which AV provider is best go have a look @ av-comparitives.org and look at their independent reproducable results.

The whole point of this forum is to provide good deals and this is a really good price for some top notch antivirus software. Those who are still banging the we hate Norton drum from 5 years ago, change the record not only is it getting boring it's inaccurate!

Its not poor software - but previous versions were shocking, and the recent versions are suffering for the sins of their forefathers (understandably). Having said that, unless the same deal is available cheaper this can't be cold can it?

Thats exactly what I thought.

Seems to be a cut-down version of the full suite as pcworld sell both the performance pack (not supplied by symantec directly - is it their own version?) and the standard version:

pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml for £38.85

Not voting either way but NIS2011 is an excellent piece of s/ware

Voted one of the best if not the best suites in the market still (free s/ware isn't always the best!)

pcpro.co.uk/rev…011

Just some comments from pc pro's review:

"But, while Norton Internet Security 2011 may be only a slight refinement of its forebear, it continues to deliver highly effective protection in a light and responsive package, thus proving itself worthy to retain the A List top-spot."

Note this is for the full release & not this performance pack? May be a special pcworld edition - so knowing pcworld it'll probably fail within a matter of days!

Yes, I was telling you where you could get equally effective antivirus and firewall software for FREE.

But, it's your hard earned money, so I guess if you want to spend it on something on some software that does the same job as a free alternative, then yup, that must be a good deal!oO

Your choice, but is the 'best deal' for antivirus and firewall software something that costs £28, or something that performs a similar/same function for free? I could say "You go work it out," but the concensus of opinion on the forum is that it's not a deal (vote stands at -82 degrees as I type this).

OK, so if you're familiar with recent versions and are comfortable with looking up new features on-line, why not look at an OEM version of Norton Internet Security 2011, if you really want the cheapest deal? Somewhere like cbccomputers.com will sell an OEM version for £15.39 incl. VAT, and delivery is free for online orders.

With the free avg anti virus you mentioned you dont get all the protection.

free.avg.com/gb-…ree

theonlytazman - the performance pack means it includes norton tools as well as norton internet security 2011 (admittedly not worth paying extra for but when they are free why not get them you don't have to install them, or you could sell them, think of it like ccleaner/glary utilities).

It is the full version, also on amazon (for 97p more though) so is a good deal.

As mentioned by others norton used to be a bloated bag of poop but has upped its game recently and PC Pro's top choice and it does not make much impact on a system's resources. The gui is a bit rubbish and when your subscription runs out it disables itself (usually packages just don't receive further updates) but apart from that it's very good.

Many thanks to OP, badbeatduke, heat and rep

same discussions every time. getting old now.
avg free just got a mark of 59% for virus removal but 93% for detection......detects but cannot remove.
whats the use?

This shouldn't be voted cold purely as people (for some unknown reason) prefer either MS Essentials or the far far inferior AVG or Avast suites. Why use FREE software that isn't up to spec?

You can get McAfee (not that good these days but still better than AVG!) or Kapersky (2nd best in my view) for FREE see:

hotukdeals.com/fre…e=2

Oh added some heat at least its below -100c now (sorry can't do more!)

Amazon now same price but cashback at pc world so probably better to get it there.
