Cracking price for that card.

Great price!
Virtually all of the 6870's are the same reference board, so don't let the fact that its not a big name brand put you off. Only downside is the 1 year warrenty, where most suppliers are offering 2 on this card. Amazing performer though. Really happy with mice.

Novatech seem to doing some good deals lately and this one is really, really good. Heat added.

Happy with mice? Thought we were discussing graphics cards?

Great card at great price

I was going to get this card, but I ended up going for the GTX 470. This card performs just a bit less than a 5850, whereas the the 470 can be overclocked to the same performance as a 5870.

I've never seen a GTX470 at around the £170 mark - presumably you paid a fair bit more for it?

It's just about £20 more, the performance gain justifies it. Right now, they come with a free copy of Mafia II too in some places so it works out well.

Would this fit into my PC with this motherboard and CPU?
Asus P5E-VM HDMI miniATX
Q6600 Quad core

Thanks

They have been less than £ 170 for the gtx470 at overclockers you can get one for £164 with mafia 2
You will need a 500 + watt power supply though

you'd need the card dimensions as mini atx mobo's arent all that big and im guessing your case wont be either

I thought these things were somewhere in-between the 5850 and 5870, performance-wise? There are so many cards within £30 of each other that it's becoming confusing.

pretty sure a 600w is recommended for the 470. they are pretty power hungry and run hot compared to the ati's.

also the 470 may overclock up to a 5870 but so can the 5850 which can be had for £150 now.

i really dont know which card to go for now.

There are way too many variables to make blanket statements like that but GPU manufacturers still do it. The power supply companies must be giving them big kickbacks.

fair point but i did check my system on a power supply calculator with a 470 in it, it came out about 560w or there abouts.

Very hot. This or a 6850 @ £130 or a 5850 @ £150...decisions decisions!

I have a 4870 1GB overclocked, think I'd see much difference with this?

I did. I upgraded from a 512MB 4870 to a 6870. I was able to turn everything to max settings in BFBC2 and it was still silky smooth framerates. Much quieter too.

Those power supply calculators are about as much use as the manufacturer’s figures. (_;)
Look at reviews at Anandtech, TechReport etc as they give actually power usage whilst gaming and running benchmark programmes which really stress the GPU.
Anandtech have a review showing a GTX 470 system consuming 366W AC (~310W DC) whilst running Crysis and 408W AC (~348W DC) running Furmark.
I give estimated DC figures as power supplies are rated for DC output whereas reviews show the AC input.

The new Radeons are certainly better for power efficiency.

The HD 6870 performs much better than HD 5850? Not sure where you got your info from. The HD 6870 is on a par with HD 5870.. Also runs cooler, uses less power, than GTX 470, and supports eyefinity. and MLAA. which the GTX 470 does not...

I currently have an intel core 2 6600 2.4ghz, an asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard and a geforce 8800GT graphics card.

Will this card work ok in my system? or do I need to buy a whole new motherboard and processor?

Thanks chaps

It will be fine. This card will need 2 power connectors, as opposed to the 1 for the 8800GT, so you may need an adaptor. (Check your PSU)
