What does barebone mean?

Has no graphics card, hard drives, optical drives.. it's just enough to turn it on...

Original Poster

Its a great system graphics card cost around £25 hardrive around £40 and cd dvd drives are cheap its good if you have a old pc that you want to upgrade !

Depends on the quality of the PSU imo.

I'd rather spend £20 or so more on cherry picked components and build myself.. since them doing this bit saves about 30 minutes once you understand what bits go where...

Original Poster

to be honest i would want to build it myself . Its a great deal and i have used them many times before

My son has a fairly old system the same as this ]http//ww…ls/ but with a P4 CPU.
Would I be able to use the HDD and DVDRW from this system?

Original Poster

You could use the cd / dvd / floppy drive and the IDE harddrive but for a new system like this i would buy a SATA 2 harddrive for around £50 and it will run like a dream ....

he should be able to...he might need drivers for the dvd drive when i did it mine just worked straight off the bat, but a friend who had an older dvd drive had to mess around finding drivers for it.

You can buy a new DVD drive for about £15 (more or less) so its no big deal.

As has been said, older hard disks used a connection called IDE but all new hard drives use one called SATA. You are better buying a new SATA drive.

Even if you did put the old IDE hard disk in, Windows probably would not work so you would need to do a Windows reinstall anyway.

He would beable to use the old dvd drive ,

Its just the harddrive is best to change you could use the IDE one for a backup ..

and no operating system...best way if you cant be bothered to mount the processor yourself and miles cheaper than a pre built cheaper and with better quality parts and upgradeable to

i bought the barebones i5 from novatech.....had a couple of strange probs.....win7 wouldnt install when all 4 ddr3 gkill memory modules were installed but fine with 2, then installed win7, then install 2 momory modules and all fine...also had a duff graphics card but new one fine......cost me about £800 all in with 1x500gb fast spin drive for win7 and programs, 1.5tb drive for data and games progs, 8gb ddr3 1600 gskill memory, i5 barbones, lg dvd drive, palit gtx260 graphics......much higher spec than the acer alien cased pc in pcworld and also less than 1/2 price, much cheaper and better than a similar specced alienware and dell xps

Thanks for the advice.
I'm looking to keep costs to a minimum, so would obviously like to keep the old HDD. Would it have a big effect on performance at all?

Original Poster

Hi ,
why would u keep the old IDE harddrive as the OP system this would be slow and then there would be no point in having a fast system think about it u can get a WD 500GB SATA 2 one for £35 quid ...

agree re: sata drive....i bought a 500gb western digital sata drive with a fast startup spin from novatech for about £43

maybe i wouldnt bother with the floppy drive, justbackup all floppies on harddisk/dvd......
might be better to turn the old pc into a Network drive or home server if you are up to the task will be more than fast enough and youd only need an os.....linux variants are cheapest/free option (eg ubuntu) but imo isnt the most user friendly os or even better windows home server (though until recently that wasnt particulary cheap - now around £60-70ish )

You can always use a IDE to SATA cable & so yes you could still use your HDD.

Nvidia boards are rubbish, especially for AMD. I'd DIY it to be honest, with a 785G board you'll get much better performance, lower power usage, better overclocking.

What an absurd baseless statement, what exactly is rubbish about Nvidia boards. The memory controller is on the processor now they have little effect on performance.

It's a good deal voted HOT!

Ignore the muppets who are in to overclocking, kinda reminds me of the lycra push bike brigade.

By all means utilise your older HDD + DVD drive if funds are tight but you really would be better off with a modern SATA unit the drives are so much quicker

Windows has never ever ever ever!(you getting this yet?) required third party drivers for DVD drives.

As a 'muppet' who is into overclocking all I can say that the AMD range of Processors are an overclockers dream, and even the x4 620 - while not a black edition - is still capable of around a 20% increase in performance. As this forum is about saving money it would be foolish to ignore the potential for this 'free' performance upgrade - if you have the skills and understanding to extract it. I currently run a AMD Phenom II 550 Black Edition and have increased it from a stock 3.1GHz to a stable 3.8GHz giving a huge boost in performance, while running rock solid and cool with just a £15 upgrade to the CPU cooler. Don't [email protected] off what you don't understand!

Damn right.

Totally agree.

As for overclocking, the nvidia boards have seen great results, most of the time its all down the processor, the old nforce 2 boards and thoroughbred chips were a cracking buy.

1.47ghz chip overclocked to 3.1ghz on air with stock cooler is not bad.

Also do some overclocking myself, (although its back on air) currently running the A64x2 black 5200+ at 3.3 Ghz with safe voltages and timings.

I think AMD are great and value for money.

Are you sure ? Never seen or even heard someone Over-clocking a CPU to those Heights with such a low CPU.Please explain what cooler/Coolers & heatsink/Fans you used top Achieve such a great result

Yes i am sure, I seen the results on the internet at the time.

SLK 800 cooler with delta fan (high rpm horrible sound). We are talking about the old thoroughbred chips.

Overclockers.co.uk where sending hand picked chips from AMD at the time.

lowyat.net/gui…xp/ gives some information for reference, as for the thread its gone, this all happened years ago.

I'm not saying your lying, But I have a Q9550 @ 2.83 now 4.1 with the so called "EO Stepping " & they are supposed to be the best for Over-clocking & I can't get anywhere near what you said.
I was just hoping you had a good secret for me to use :-D

The person who did the MASSIVE overclock modded the motherboard in some way because the vcore voltage maxed out and it wouldnt let him go any higher in the BIOS. Epox 8RDA+ I seem to recall.

Afraid I have limited knowledge on Intel chips mate, just the general, your multiplier, fsb, vcore etc... take it you have tried these.

You water cooled or not, is your system getting into windows or just not passed post screen.

Hi .. is this better than the ebuyer deal.... for £225.00... this case looks like a bit of a monster...

Not at all baseless, Nvidia chipsets for post-S939 AMD are flaky, more power hungry, have weaker IGPs and don't overclock as well when compared with AMDs chipsets. I would have thought the fact that Nvidia's has all but bailed out of chipset production made this obvious enough. Their Intel chipsets for S775 were always outclassed by Intel's offerings and are now nowhere to be seen. The only thing Nvidia has to offer is SLI.

Gone are the days of Nforce 2 and Nforce 4, they were corkers, but nothing from Nvidia has been close since.
