Box alone is around £40, probably a little less from 3rd party. With a good whack of pass seems decent. If you don't already have either a now TV box or freeview certainly.

Advantages over the other box:

- Over 60 Freeview channels + 15 HD channels
- Pause & rewind live TV
- HDMI® (HDCP 1.4 HDMI®)
- Quad core instead of dual core

There does not appear to be an av out on this box?

So if I use this I get free view I don't need an aerial??

You'll stil need aerial

I think the giveaway here is the big socket on the back marked Arial in

Actually, it says "Aerial In". I think Arial is the name of the little mermaid and I don't think that's where shes supposed to go.

Does anybody know if you can still load plex onto this version like you could with the old ones? I have had a look online but I can't find anything.

HOT! I've been waiting for a deal on this! Thanks OP.

Does this box stream the freeview HD channels in 720p or 1080p? And can you pause & rewind sky sports?

Pretty sure freeview, or sky hd, when viewed live are 1080i max?

I'm under the impression you could only do this on the white Now TV box. The more recent black Now TV box and this brand new Now TV Smart Box both lack this feature and only have HDMI out.

You can get a HDMI - RCA converter here for a tenner. That's your CRT future proofed for a long time yet

It doesn't stream the Freeview channels. There's a little aerial socket on the back and it just works like a normal freeview tuner.

That's traditionally been the case although the BBC started using 1080p for their Freeview HD transmissions a couple of years back. Unsure if others have followed suit.

Freeview HD is broadcast in both 1080i and 1080p depending on channel and programme.

Will you have to buy an aerial for the free view if you don't have one?

Yes, you'll need an aerial to access the freeview channels.

I have two of these new boxes. There really good, love the integration of Freeview and Now TV live/catch-up channels...and yes they need an aerial.

If you are so desperate to be pedantic, the famous mermaid you refer to is 'Ariel'. Arial is a typeface.

only if you use iplayer. just having the iplayer app will not mean you need to pay the license but if you actually use the iplayer app to stream catch up or live tv.

Finding conflicting information about the resolution of NowTV streams, Is it still restricted to 720p on this box?

**From what ive read it does still fall into the 720p restriction, Just the usual the box "can" produce 1080p"

Sky's Now TV service might be limited to 720p resolution, but the Smart Box itself is a 1080p machine. This means that it's the streaming services themselves that get to decide between 720p and 1080p.

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/av-accessories/now-tv-smart-box-1324139/review/2

So it's NOWTV limiting its streaming to 720p.

iPlayer and the rest would probably work in 1080p.

Sorry, I couldn't resist burning your "burn".

I have the white box and find it really slow to respond to the pause button and the rewind takes me back too far if I'm wanting to look at something from a moment ago, is the black box any better?

Yes

are there two versions of the black box? there was a deal a few weeks ago where Argos were selling the black box with 6 months entertainment pass for 19.99 - is this box different?

For this deal you will need a tv licence anyway as its a freeview box

any deals with skysports subscriptions?

If I plug the TV aerial into this. Will this mean the regular TV internal channels are now black screen. I know this does the regular TV channels too. But there are many times I just want to watch TV through the TV as opposed to an addon box.

decent

Is this really Freeview HD? Doesn't mention this on Amazon.

*edit* see on the TR review it is. Will order for our non Freeview HD TV.

Is this any better than a youview box? Need a box due to getting rid of Sky.
