What’s the difference between the now tv smart box and the stick?
What’s the resolution of NowTV sky stuff these days?
Now TV streams 720p. This was posted last week I think. Only Netflix and Amazon stream in 4k.

What’s the difference between the now tv smart box and the stick?

The box can output 4k, is noticeably faster than the stick, can output video at the native frame rate, and includes an ethernet port - it also appears to be more reliable than the stick.

The Roku Streaming Stick+ is a much more flexible option, but does not have a ethernet port. Unfortunately Roku do not sell the Ultra/Premiere models in the UK, of which this Now TV box is a hobbled version.

It *can* output 4K, but NOW TV content only streams in 720p.
If the passes are on the smart box does that mean I would have to login to my account on this particular box to tie them to my account first? - Or is there a way of activating them on my existing account without connecting up this box first ?

Thanks in advance

You activate the box and the vouchers are then transferred to your account (for later use), and once you have done this you can log out of your account on this box (without the box ever adding to your activated devices).
Will this box fix the problems the stick introduced? Two sticks same problems. Both on extended HDMI cables to get it away from the TV. Getting TV flickering to a brief colour flashing on screen. Like green or purple.

Not seen this on the 4K box which comes with an HDMI cable, and the 4K box can output the video at the native frame rate (24, 50, 60 FPS).

Poor quality hdmi cable, or possible overheating of the sticks, or not enough power getting to the stick.

Its gonna be one of them causing it.

I'm using the supplied power adapter, tried different hdmi cables and direct connection. They're certainly overheating, the case gets toasty.

To be clear, only the original Smart Box had Freeview built in, the 4K Smart Box does not have this feature.

It is a wi-fi remote, but also uses infra-red to control tv on/off + tv volume up/down.
I usually watch NowTV through my PlayStation, would the box be any different in terms of picture quality?
Careful with this. The month passes start the second you active them or your new account and the month passes auto renew on sport. I got caught out by this.

For NowTV alone? no difference whatsoever. Netflix on this would be 4k, unless you have a PS4 Pro, only then would it make a difference.

The passes start when you activate them, not when you activate the box. When you purchase/activate any pass with NowTV it does inform you once the pass runs out that there will be a monthly charge..... Activate thd pass, then cancel straight away, you can still use until its run out date.

That's curious you say that - I found the Roku models you said about on eBay, Amazon and CEX - all on the UK (.co.uk) websites for purchase. Roku is far better than this box and as you stated the Streaming Stick + is the one to go for. Can do more and just install the NowTV app.

To be clear I was talking about the top of the range Ultra/Premiere models that have never been sold in the UK (which share the same form factor as the Now TV 4K Smart Box), not the budget Premiere model that has recently been released.

Excuse my lack of techy experience.
So basically is this like streaming through your laptop with a hdmi cable?
This is what I'm doing at the moment and is a right pain.
And I can't afford a smart TV.
But you can't watch normal TV on it?

Yes it is.

Please note that the Now TV devices only have a limited selection of apps, so best to check that the channels/services you want to watch are available first - the lack of Amazon Prime TV and Apple TV apps being the most obvious examples at the moment.

Heat added, but I'd probably still go for one of the Roku options instead
Didn't buy it but took advantage of the 1 free month of entertainment. Thanks

Wasn't aware of this (despite using NowTV quite regularly and being contacted by them several months ago to participate in HD beta testing), thanks for sharing.

That’s not true. The MONTHLY sports pass starts the second you active your account.
